I had eva as a 9 until I rewatched it last year and realized I fucking hate a third of the episodes in the first half.

haven't watched it all yet, but shinji was the reason i dropped it some time ago. I probably pick it up at some point again to watch the whole in order to get a proper view.

I could see a hardened military man dealing with the situation okay, but a 14 year old boy with severe mental health issues that has basically been thrown into every single situation with almost 0 explanation? I'm honestly surprised he managed to not kill himself by the 3rd episode

yeah I get that. But it became somewhat annoying seeing him crying all the time. It's a bit like frodo in lotr where it's quite annoying seeing him this weak, when in reality her had the biggest mental hardship.

It starts off strong, then we get what is essentially a ton of filler, and a very inconsistent tone.

because zeta kinda sucked
the music was mediocre
the action sucked
the pacing was awful
it didn't spend nearly enough time with the interesting parts like when the aeug is gathered for stuff like the assault on jaburo or whenever karaba shows up, whatever amuro was doing was way more interesting than the argama floating around doing whatever
half the cyber-newtype stuff was a waste of time
the titans were kind of two-dimensionally evil to a ridiculous degree and nearly all of their plans to counter the aeug whenver they showed up was "oh shit the aeug is here, find a colony to hold hostage"
for fuck's sake the titans are literally gassing colonies after a while
i liked kamille though kamille and emma were pretty cool
I think I'd probably like Zeta more upon re-watching it, I should do that sometime.

Both Zeta and ZZ have this problem where they fail to show the scale of the conflict being the immediate gaze of the Argama and its pursuers.
This was fine in 0079 since it was all about the White Base being on the run but when there's a big war going on, the only contact with the larger scale being the politics wasn't ideal. There's a lot going on in ZZ and Zeta that we just don't get to see.
I'd adore a Gryps era OVA focusing on Karaba or even another AEUG ship. And I'm biased but I give way more of a shit about what Amuro is doing at any given moment than Kamille and his crew.
