the focus of the anime is kind of the exact opposite of combat
so if that's all you would watch it for then that would be a bad choice probably

The thing that should be emphasised about 0079 is that it's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay less dated than you would think other than the animation, some of the goofy Zeon designs, and the G-Armour.
I watched SDF Macross and it was the most dated eighties thing I've seen, but if you gave 0079 modern animation it would easily be more fresh and original than most mecha shows made in the last ten years.

there's f91 and victory after unicorn and also 0080, 0083, and 08th MS team that are between 0079 and zeta, you can watch those whenever since they're not particularly too connected with the main story, then watch turn a gundam because literally screw all the not UC stuff tbqfh
The poor animation is made up for by the excellent action choreography anyway.
Zeta has much better animation but the fights are awful.
