As long as the dub doesn't drastically change the story, 99% of the time they are fine. I really never got why people take subs vs. dubs so seriously, if you enjoy the show one way, great and likewise if you enjoy it another great as well.
It's just a cartoon show after all.

Yeah, if it's Morgan Freeman or Will Smith performing Shawshank Redemption it would still be the same experience.
If Winnie the Pooh was voiced by Hulk Hogan it still would have been the same experience.

But seriously, everyone has their own tastes. I sometimes get annoyed by high pitched voices, or on Saturdays having to ready while I am drinking with friends watching anime. Dubs are fine most the time, I really only watch the subs if no dub is available(or commie subbed it). I don't speak Japanese so I can't understand what they are saying anyways. Let's just enjoy the show, and dubs generally don't usually "ruin" anything.

I'm not arguing against anyone having different tastes? I'm simply asking him why he prefers dubs, I've just asked, no answer yet.
The high pitched voices are replaced with people imitating high pitched voices, but with really poor acting on top of it, and personally I find their voices even worse because they don't only have high pitched voices but also sound like little girls or bratty teenagers.
I don't see how speaking japanese is related. You learn how the language works as you hear it, you pick out words and see their context in the subs, you understand when a word ends and a new word begins, you learn the nuances of how the language is spoken. We watch them swith subs because we don't understand the language either.
I would never watch a french, german, spanish, etc movie dubbed either, because it's not in line with the directors vision. Somebody has painstalkingly picked out these specific people to act and voice because they deliver the performance and voice the director is looking for. Then the dubbing companies just slap on whoever they can get their hand on that is popular and, in the case of anime, have them make voices for itty bitty babies because it's cartoons so it must be 7+ friendly.

I normally watch some of the first ep to gauge how the main characters sound in each language then I can choose which I prefer, most of the time it's normally Japanese but I find that in some cases the English seems to fit better and for me one of those cases is Trigun. Best way I can explain it is that sometimes their voices don't match their faces for me so I pick which I think fits best.
It's also nice to take a break from reading subs sometimes.

Yeah, for instance when I started SAO I started in English but Kirito sounded too old for someone who was meant to be like, 15, so I swapped over and it was a lot better.
