until about a week ago, I didn't know how CRT monitors worked.
Basically you have a big cathode ray tube (CRT, get it?) inside a case that shoots electrons at a screen of phosphor dots. The phosphor dots make different colors when hit by the electron beam, which is manipulated by different filters to make different colors. I used to think it was a bunch of tiny light bulbs, and that the big honkin' back end was a computer that told all the lights what to do when it got the video signal from the computer.
LCD monitors use a backlight that's shined onto a liquid crystal screen. the video signals from the computer twists the crystals and affects how the light passes through them, creating different colors.
