They did that on purpose to amplify the violent change in personality. It's one thing to see someone go insane and start torturing people it's completely another to see a person who set up as nice and cute go insane and start torturing people.
You have to watch the second season. It's mandatory if you want to have any idea of what going on.
It can basically can be reduced to this: Season 1 brings up the questions and Season 2 answers all the questions.
