Baroness and Muse.
I hate to say it, but if you think of how rap/hip hop is popular among black youth, and how jazz used to occupy that same space a few short decades ago, you'll see it clearer as evolving alongside that subculture.

One funny thing is all the things people say about rap now (it's not music, it's uncivilized, it promotes promiscuity and violence in youth, etc) are exactly the same thing they said about jazz in the first half of the 20th century

I've been hearing about A Tribe Called Quest for a little bit now and after hearing that song I wanna check them out now.
I heard white people like no hip-hop group more than A Tribe Called Quest.
New music is shit in comparison to old music, keep on listening to the old stuff OP. If you like jazz I would've thought you'd have been more into 30's-60's music though. If you really want to broaden your horizons start listening to classic rock and make your way from there.
Honestly if you want to fit in so badly, go listen to Bring Me The Shitstorm... I mean Horizon.

Just out of interest, is there nothing current that you like? Or do you mean new music is shit in comparison to older music?
Just go to Last.fm
you prefer some over hyped hag rather than a talented and successful band?
And Muse aren't over hyped?
Listen to what YOU like.

In comparison to older music; I listen to some newer bands still but there's nothing like some 60's and 70's music. I also know quite a few people who don't listen to current music at all and have hundreds of CD's that they own and listen to frequently. There are so many good quality bands from past generations and great CD's avaliable you could really survive the rest of your life only listening to music made before the 90's easily. From listening to a lot of different bands I've developed a schizophrenic taste in music, for example I can be listening to Louis Armstrong for an hour and then suddenly start listening to Daft Punk.
For reference on some good bands check Doug52392's post.
Although it's possible to aquire taste in a particular band or genre the only way you'll really know what you like is by listening to a lot. I listen to hundreds of different bands and genres of music and there are only a few bands I listen to frequently, having a large music library is never a bad thing as long as you don't overplay certain artists/albums and won't get tired of it.
Oh, this thread is by the same guy who made the thread about fashionable clothes. You really need to learn to go with your tastes OP.

Just like the music that appeals to you. You don't need to change to be "cool".

WHOAWHOAWHOA, STOP THE PRESS!
Not that I'm a genre elitist, but KSE is NOT rock.
They're fucking awesome, but not rock.
I think you should stick with the music you like, it's cool to not be a mainstream fag who listens to all crap on the radio.
All sorts of music are cool. Personally I listen to Rock and Rap. Rage against the machine, Hed PE, Wu Tang, Lil Wayne, Drake, Sysem of a down, Metallica, Gorillaz, Dethklok. Just get on youtube and search through the vast libraries.
