What the fuck. Sitting through three tutorial videos just to start the fucking shit. I can't take it, the amount of compressed information sprouted out through his mouth in a short timespan before even fucking start is massive. And since the tutorial is for the D40 version there are stuff that aren't the same anymore and ths some basic things just doesn't make sense because they aren't the same at all.
Couldn't even mine by pressing enter at one space and then pressing enter again at a new spot. It just canceled the action, and there is no helpful description in the game either. If I have to look up the wikipedia for everything I have to do, then fuck that.

You mine by pressing d, choosing mine, enter at one spot and enter on another and it makes a line or rectangle between them. Should work on all versions.

You sure you're not designating the grass? The mining command is used on walls and stuff dwarves can't pass through (aka ground). Find a cliffside (black area, with ramps on sides usually) and dig into that.

Well, that's possible.
But on the other side. How can there be grass in the underground?
The first floor is the normal height. Then I went down to the second floor where I saw the indication stripes of grass and open space and such, but hey it's underground. And on the third floor it was all light blue, and so it kept being for eternity, so it's not possible to to do anything there as far as I know.
You can go up and down Z-levels with shift/ctrl+5. Use d-j to make a down stair, then go one z-level down and make an up stair with d-u on the exact spot. It allows your dwarves to go down the stairs and you can then designate digging on the Z-level below ground level.

You were going up, not down. Light blue means you're high up in the air.
