I'm in a similar situation as you OP, only I have no family to speak of other than my mom, and I generally move from state to state every year or so, while moving to different studio apartments every 3-6 months. The longest I've ever lived in a single place has been 13 months, all because my mom is, well, paranoid. But yeah, shitty living conditions all around, and my mom refuses to get government aid out of pride, so my life can get hilariously low-class at times. And I wouldn't have it any other way. I've known a lot of rich people in my life, and they're all assholes. No question about it. They way they think is entirely centered around owning more expensive furniture and cars, making more money, getting ahead in the pointless rat race living life with no purpose other than social status. Well, I'll take my generic soda and cramped living quarters and used clothing over that any day.
I live in an affluent suburb, my father rakes in $400k+ a year broking stocks. I grew up sheltered and as a result felt angst and rebellion when puberty hit, contrasting the dull complacency that entails growing up never facing any real problems, surrounded by plastic people. As cliche as it sounds, I didn't fit in. I lusted for the life of a 'real' person, with character and artistic values that I discovered at the neighboring 'poor' schools. I couldn't fit in with the rich kids, and the 'real' people rejected me because of my money - they took offense to my presence (understandable). Even though life has been comfortable and I'm thankful for everything I have, I feel that my parents' relative wealth has stunted my growth as a person. I'm ultimately lonely and disconnected from society, but I don't blame anything or anyone. A good majority of my life has been spent as a product of my environment, and am now slowly balancing my character. I appreciate the money, but hate that I didn't earn it.
Also, what's so great about hawaii? I've lived in hawaii and I've lived in Los Angeles, and see no relevant difference between them: just as much drug use, just as much delinquency, only instead of smog from traffic you get lung-shattering smoke from the burning cane fields. edit: My automerge! BBOOPPIIEE!!
I grew up average, thought I was poor didn't really pay attention or know. Found out a few years back that throughout the 80s and 90s my dad was extremely high up in a company called Uniden. He made extremely good money, but we never lived like we did. The company moved and he didn't want to go, so he quit and became a firefighter. Now I know we don't have a ton of money, we have enough to live how we are now, but the amount of money he used to bring in was enough to live extremely well off. He just chose to save all of it instead of spend it. Being rich isn't all that is important.
There's a kid on my lacrosse team who is a second generation rich bitch. His grandfather is a multi-millionaire, so his dad hasn't worked a day in his life. They live off his trust fund, and this kid is in line to get the entirety of his grandpa's inheritance. BUT, a couple of months ago said grandfather remarried with some really young South American girl. The kid was freaking the fuck out, because if his grandfather has a child with this new wife, he'll lose his inheritance. I, and everyone else who has met him, really really hopes this happens.
Actually, I'm fine with it, just don't blow it in my face
I'll blow smoke in your face like I want to fuck you.
So hey I'm flying up into space with Virgin Galactic next year. and stuff
I know how you feel, OP. Before I moved to Florida from Canada with my family, I really wanted to stay on my own and finish college in Canada. I'd be with my friends, I would still be with my girlfriend and I'd be in lovely Canada. Sadly, lack of any real "extra cash" or money in general is the sole reason why I couldn't stay. I didn't have enough to sustain myself (cause I was dumb enough to spend money I made from work without thinking twice about it at times) and my family couldn't loan me the 10 gran I so desperately need to get back to Canada. Spent all we could on a house down in Florida that will take several years to pay off in the end. That's practically my life goal now and I plan on accomplishing that in another 7 months with the two jobs I got going. Still, all this effort could have been easily avoided and put into something more important if there was some more money coming my way, eh? Makes me sick sometimes when there are people out there that just seem to get it all cause they have the funds. In fact, I used to think I was pretty well off than most people when I was younger. But the older you get, the more you begin to realize just how special you really weren't.
Most kids who are rich turn out to be douches, working and earning what you have builds character, you dont benefit from being rich past the being rich part
Not really, it depends on the type of person they would have been anyway, I give half of my shit away exactly because I don't want to be seen as the douchey rich kid, I don't like douchey rich kids as much as anybody else does, if your rich you might as well share it.
I have never been rich, and have been working part time and going to school full time. yet I now own 2 vehicles. At 17. If you really want something there are ways (i.e. if you work hard and long enough) you can get almost anything you want. But i know what youre saying. Just today I was wishing I had a higher paying job so I could fix up my cars engine and full restore my truck when i wanted to. Instead of slowly buying part by part.
CCCAASSSHHHHH I'm Rich.
What is it, like 4 parody threads of this?
Your mom is old.
You say you get great grades, just work hard, go to college, and be successful. If you're good enough, maybe colleges will give you a full ride, or at least a lot of money. And yeah, like people have said in the thread, being rich spoils you, working hard will get you places. I have an extremely rich friend that's a complete idiot in school. He's going to die if his family stops providing for him.
Oh god, you guys are all hateful, you know that, your just as bad as them going around saying that your better than them because your happy with smaller things in life, and that you don't need much to be happy, and yet you get on here and scorn them any time the chance pops up.
Heh, that's funny. I live in Washington too. And we also can't afford heating.
Also, Costco sells good logs for cheap.
I feel like I am rich, I have a job, no car or any other expenses yet and a few hundred a week is AMAZING. buying so much cool stuff. I started saving though. I liked buying cool things more.
Sometimes I wish this wasn't a parody thread. [editline]19th November 2010[/editline] Shit, this is the original thread? [editline]19th November 2010[/editline] Well either way, the bigger they are.. the harder they fall.
You asked what it is like to be wealthy, and I will tell you. Not sure if I would be considered wealthy, but my Dad makes $300,000+ a year. We have three cars, a 2,400 square foot lake home in Michigan, and does any of this make me happy? Yes, but not as happy as you would think. Being wealthy is kind of sad in a way. It is great to have money, and things, but money can't buy true happiness. It can't buy good taste, manners, or friends. People who are not as wealthy enjoy these things, because instead of focusing on money they focus on what makes them. Do I enjoy big toys? Hell yes. Do my parents hand things to me on a solver platter. Fuck no. I work full time at Target to pay for things myself. Does money come easy and without a price? Not in my Dad's case. He got good grades in school, worked his ass off in college, got a good job, and continues to this day to get a good education. He is new money not that easy street old money bullshitters that get handed there wealth. I am sort of rambling on right know, but I guess the point I am trying to make is that money is not the key to living a good life. I would know.
I live in upper-middle class. feels good man
You asked what it is like to be wealthy, and I will tell you. If they were dirt poor do you think they would have as many friends. What a sick world we live in.
Don't take me wrong or anything, but I sometimes wish I was rich. I live in a rich kid public school where everyone brags that their going to Hawaii or they just bought their 4th mansions, shit like that. I'm probably the lowest class of them all. I wear decent clothes and shit, its just that my mom has no job, and I don't even know my dad. We live in my ceased grandmothers house that was built in 1942. Its a decent house, don't get me wrong. Well built, all that. It's just that it doesn't have..newness to it. I've probably been living my whole life as a lower class. One period of my life for about 5 years (3-8) I was middle - high class. But since then, shit hasn't happened. We are in the process of selling this house, but the money is split in between my aunts and uncles, and we probably get 10,000. Even then we won't be middle class again, as we have to move into a house we own on a hill that has a frozen well due to renting it out to these dumb asses. The only sources of presents for Christmas or money or anything is from my favorite aunts. They're both nurses, and they make a pretty good wage. Keep in mind, I live in a pretty..old family. My mother is 64, and my aunts are 65 and 56. I don't really have anyone that's my age, as none of my aunts wanted children as late as my mother. I just wanted to express my feelings of being poor. I have a computer just because it was given to me by my aunt. And if you've seen my PC Building section thread, that is also the result of my aunt and me getting good grades, having a job, ect. I'm not sure if any of you benefit from being rich or anything, but I just want to ask you what its like, and is it really what it sums up to be? TL;DR: Sick of being poor, low class. I have a house and everything, its just that we have no money for anything else.
Stay in school Go to a CC work hard for 2 years Get a good goverment job
Study hard, do well, go to college. It may get better.
This, you have to work to get $$$.
op needs to stop crying you're taking everything for granted
I'm glad I wasn't spoiled growing up, but now that I've done a lot of hard work, learned my lessons about quality of self, and responsibility and all that shit, I really wouldn't mind being filthy rich. All I want is a nice modern house tucked away in the woods by a big lake, with a private airstrip on the lot, and a plane to go on it. I want a really nice office, a beautiful wife, and I would like my bedroom to be beneath the surface of the lake (which I would obviously convert to a saltwater lake and stock with exotic fish), so that I can sleep in the soothing glow of moonlit water--which would throw lovely shiney-sparkley glows all over the walls and stuff. And it would all have to be self-sustaining, energy-wise, so I would like a solar-and-wind-farm on the lot somewhere. And a pet Cheetah. Baby Cheetah's are very cute, and adult Cheetah's are super cool looking, so I wouldn't get bored with it. Side-by-side comparison for proof: [img_thumb]http://static.funnyjunk.com/pictures/furry-baby-cheetah.jpg[/img_thumb]
Impractical, many near by wildlife and plantlife obviously use that lake for water, you could also end up needing it for that, obviously it is a quite impractical and improbable move to convert that lake. [editline]19th November 2010[/editline]
[img_thumb] http://28.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_kzs506d3v31qzrr0co1_500.png[/img_thumb] Feel better OP!
How is not experiencing battle lucky? You're NOT luckier than me because you didn't choose to go into the army. I'm luckier than you because I'll be saving your damn ass and taking the tax money your employer paid to cover the costs.
Most kids who are rich turn out to be douches, working and earning what you have builds character, you dont benefit from being rich past the being rich part
Yeah, the high school I went to has a bunch of rich kids who take everything they have for granted. Although I'm fairly well off now, when I was younger I didn't have much. My parents were immigrants from the Philippines and came here with nothing. They took menial jobs to try to pay for their educations, took low paying hospital jobs, then slowly rose through the ranks until they became the doctors they are today. I watched as all of this happened, and I'm glad that I lived poor for a while. I realized that you just can't take money for granted. If I was born rich, I probably would have turned into a selfish asshole.
