Today in one of my classes, the back part of the room was having its own conversations as usual. We were arguing about politics today, and got onto the topic of how all the GOP candidates are basically running on the platform of religion. Which, of course, is monumentally ridiculous. One person is a pretty staunch Republican, though, and he insisted that religion is a good platform for politics, because it encourages morals.
So from there we started arguing about whether or not religious people have "more morals." Mr. Republican was quite certain that all those with religion immediately are more morally conscious than those without. A friend of mine then basically said, "that's not true at all. Morals are completely independent of religious views. There are atheists and theists alike that are good, and some that are racists or homophobes."
Mr. R then said, "yeah, well I don't agree with gays either." And then my friend said, "agree with what? There's nothing to agree with. You can't agree or disagree with homosexuality." Then Mr. R insisted that he "doesn't want to see gays kissing in public" and crap. At this point I was getting well and truly pissed, but I held my tongue because it was the middle of the lesson and I would have yelled. Then, Mr. R said "Yeah, well I don't want my kids to be raised with a bunch of gays around."
I was fucking angry. I near-shouted "Yeah, and I don't want to raise my kids with a bunch of homophobic bigots around." He glowered at me, and the teacher just dismissed us and told us to quite down. Then he turned around and went back to spewing idiocy to my friend. She ranted to me later about what an idiot he was.
I just find it so unbelievable that this viewpoint manages to survive. It frustrates the living hell out of me, that such close-minded ass-backwards bible-thumping dumbasses [I]aren't[/I] extinct. The worst part is, you can't argue with them because they can't be reasoned with; religion is its own evidence, in their eyes.
TL;DR Stupid people are stupid.
You should get a bunch of gay people to follow him around and start feeling each other up in his presence.

Yeah, ultimately, I guess so. You can't debate the stupid out of someone, unfortunately.
It just felt so purposefully inflammatory, especially considering he was sitting next to my openly-gay friend. He wasn't talking directly to her but it certainly seemed decidedly insensitive. She was practically vibrating with anger. :v:
