moving at 3mph (the estimated speed it would move)... I think I would just walk to the side of it.

I've always loved A7Vs, they've always looked like some kind of giant rolling death box to me.

Umm... no tanks of that era had AC units. I don't even think WW2 tanks had them.

Sounds like a nazi thing to do
Sounds like a nazi thing to do
Fucking Krauts, I say.
It's obviously fake, the photo is just a bunch of stringed together T-28 hulls.
Actually three of those tanks were indeed manufactured. I think one of them exploded after breaking in half when crossing a trench. I don't think the others survived long either.
Edit: Apparently the article says so too. Shoulda read it first.

I can't say for sure the tank was real but the picture in the article is definitely photoshopped.

NI tank was the best tank of the war :colbert:
At the beginning of the war between Germany and the Soviet Union, a majority of the factories were evacuated, including most of the equipment from the January Uprising Factory. There was machinery left and it was decided that it would be used to service battle-damaged tanks arriving from the front.
When the army fighting on the outskirts of Odessa (the city defences held out for seventy-two days before the army pulled back) started experiencing shortages in tanks, the workers from the factory decided to build a fighting vehicle of their own design. Aided by the workers from other factories, January Uprising workers built a big metal box and put it on the tractor. Also added was a traversable turret with either a mountain gun or a large-calibre machine gun. The armour was a sandwich of thin naval steel or boiler plate and wood or rubber sheeting to improve protection against small arms. The resulting machine was unlike any other fighting vehicle of the time and made an awfully loud noise when it moved.
Armament was varied, including sub-turrets from T-26 Model 1931 tanks, new turrets with 37 mm Model 15R mountain guns or 45 mm anti-tank guns.
The first NI left the factory on August 20, 1941. Another two machines were built before it saw its first combat on September 1 in a local engagement on the outskirts of the city. When German troops saw an armoured formation including the unusual looking machines noisily making their way toward them, they retreated back to their starting positions. It was then decided to pull the tanks back to keep their nature secret.
Even though the tanks' speed was a very slow 7 km/h, their armour was able to withstand small arms fire. In the second half of September, a battalion was formed equipped with NI tanks. In one memorable episode, the tanks entered a village occupied by German troops and while under fire were able to tow away 24 German guns.
Of world war 2 that is. Just felt the need to post about this amazing machine of death.
or it could run you over. Consider that.
It ran on two sets of heavy-gauge railroad tracks.
Machine guns and probably smaller tank guns.
actually, no. The heavy gustav was not meant for close range conflict, so it was not fitted with any guns other than the 800mm artillery cannon. The crew probably had submachine guns and pistols though.

some more info on gustav:
took about 30 minutes to reload
left craters 30 feet deep
maximum firing range of 30 miles
info on the Landkruezer P.1500:
The Monster was to be a 1,500 tonne mobile, self-propelled platform for an 80-cm K (E) gun, along with two 15 cm sFH 18 heavy howitzers, and multiple MG 151 auto cannons. It was deemed impractical, and in 1943 was canceled by Albert Speer. It never left the drawing board and no progress was ever made. It would have easily surpassed the Panzer VIII Maus (heaviest tank ever built) and the Landkreuzer P. 1000 Ratte (Also never built, although one twin 280 mm gun turret has been rumoured to have been completed) in weight and size.

That behemoth tank was proven fake, would've been cool though. It sprung up when some fiction writer wrote a description about and put together a photo-shopped picture.
That was the Maus, a much smaller tank. The remaining one is in the Kubinka tank museum in Russia.

That's fucking hilarious. I can just picture a bunch of tanks putting up to enemy lines under small-arms fire, hooking up to some siege guns, and just driving away :v:
Jesus Christ.

It's only terrifying because those abominations of steel give us an actual size-to-destructive force comparison. As scary as they seem, we once (Russia, 50-100 Megaton Tsar Bomba) had the capability to level areas the size of a small country with a single weapon. Today, we can accurately fire a nuclear payload anywhere in the world without serious hassle.
I want you to stop and really think about a fact you probably already know:
We (humans) literally have the capability to destroy almost the entire Earth's population and render most of the planet as inhospitable.
something bad ass that actually existed you say? ok!
