forum shmuck judges will be as bad a disaster as last year, where copycat gamemodes prevailed over original work, and time spent judging each gamemode was based on "i broke your gamemode in installation, and i refuse to join your server to try it there because i want to spend 4/5 the competition judging time on a single gamemode"
no way
Because it's a hell of a lot easier to think up an original idea if you get given a direction to go in.
Suggest themes rather then force everyone to stand by them then
- If you're out of idea's, you can use Niandra's gamemode idea thing.
Everything should be from scratch and if we can increase the time-frame I would appreciate that. You're landing right on my 2 busier work days.
The fact that no one knows if the gamemode was made in the alotted time really cripples the whole competition
Well we got to trust the coder then don't we? We can't know for sure if someone did or did not code the gamemode in the time span

true, but perhaps there could be a way to have teamviewer open or something of the sort

Thats not a feasible idea
I may take a part, but first I need a good idea for a gamemode, 'cause I'm not creative at all.
I'll be willing to provide free server hosting for anyone who needs it for the competition, TCAdmin access included. They would run on Linux (Debian) x64 if that affects anyone's development.
Let me know on Steam or PM.

Also, this should really have a theme picked at random. That way, you don't have people submitting projects that have been worked on for a long time.

Here's your theme.
Incoming Solid Cake 4.
Have the few judges, discuss it with them and release the theme when the competition starts. Make it unique so it's something nobody just has lying around.

Also around a week development time would be really nice, I know I said this before but just to give someone like me who doesn't always have a lot of free time lying around enough time to work on it.

Having a theme is the best way to ensure that most of the gamemodes are made under the competition time.
Let's have a vote.
Agree for a week, Disagree for the dates already suggested.

I don't think the theme should be any physical thing as it didn't go that well last year. If it's instead a concept (eg. darkness, loneliness, pride), which is what Ludum Dare usually does I think, it wouldn't limit it too much but would still force people to be creative.
People having worked on their gamemodes before releasing the theme isn't an actual problem. It's a creativity competition, not a technical one (I hope). I actually quite like the idea of 48 hours because it forces people to focus on the core gameplay rather than arbitrary things, but I guess it doesn't fit many peoples' schedule. It also wouldn't be a bad idea to provide a common base (something like fretta) or common weapon base for people to use to make multiple gamemodes work better together.
FUCK SAKE I AM GOING TO THIS BIG PARTY TOMORROW, NOW I HAVE TO CANCEL THAT! xD
Oh hey I'd actually participate in a contest for once!
Sign me up if the timespan is a week.
(I'd also prefer a theme to be set, but either way works for me)

As much as I like the idea of doing it Ludum Dare style, a week would probably be better. If you're going to do it over a short time-span (2-3 days) then at least schedule it over a weekend.

People can work and be busy during the weekend still its just less likely,
Drama...
You have no time to accept the contest then dont do it.
Same with missing gamemode idea. It should not be an big problem for an advanced scripter to present a gamemode idea after 48 hours.
If I may ask, Why do we run this gamemode competition like the other ones since this one is "Official" essentially picking the right judges and PROVIDING the right TIME to the developers to actually make a half decent gamemode
I'm pretty sure the idea behind the 48 hours bit is similar to the (hour) game festival/convention/things where it's about what people come up with/do in the allotted time, not whether or not it's a fully fleshed out game with ~max tier grafix~.
I asked Postal if prizes such as gold membership and titles would be okay and this is the response I got:

I am going to assume it's fine :v:

Judges should get to change their titles too. You can listen to me cause I'm totally unbiased (don't look at the op, IT LIES)

As an insignificant blue member of FP, I can verify that James is 100% legitimate and not biased at all.
Is there going to be a theme provided?
Put me down as interested.

I'm offended, I'm atleast 110% unbiased, if not 115%.
Alright, I've updated the OP, let me know if I've missed anyone. In a couple days time the judges positions will close and the judges will discuss the theme.
Also, when's the best timeframe for a week? I was thinking next Friday.
