Regarding the rules; would I be able to take components from my own premade projects? E.g I use a loading system with all my gamemodes, or if I need a round system, I'd take it from my own preexisting project, since if I need them. I would basically remaking them the same way anyway if I need them so there would be no way to tell if I took it or just remade it since they would look the same Also these themes sound like they're going to need custom maps to fit with the themes stated, I can't see anyone fitting the themes without one
I've found at least 3 maps that would work for my idea for the Pre-Apocalyptic genre.
As kila pointed out though, pre-apocalyptic could mean anything, all maps could pre-apocalyptic, because an apocalypse hasn't hit that map yet so to speak so hasn't affected anything. So how can you say you have found maps that could work?
I'd love to see something about deep space or medieval stuff. (Yes I did vote)
the prizes are incredibly vague i happen to have the two weeks of this competition off from work, and certainly have the experience to make something interesting, but i should be studying for university instead you can't just promise "the prize pool" what does first place get? is it first pick of a pool up to a certain dollar amount? what is in this pool, specifically? [editline]27th July 2015[/editline] how can you have thousands of dollars in steam games? why is this not a cash award; how did you come by insane amounts of games in your steam inventory?
I'm still writing out all the prizes but they're broken down into 3 tiers. Bronze: < $25 Silver: $25 - $100 Gold: $100+ Ideally, every developer who participates will get a prize of some sort, even if it's just a small game. I will lay out the prizes for the highest scorers and other special conditions. For anyone wondering, I have obtained most of my keys from Humble Bundles. Any prizes that are non-keys will be fully explained (as there aren't too many of them). Edit: Decided to clarify the $5,000 value thing in the main post. Didn't want to be like those infomercials that claim to be worth hundreds. $5,000+ is the amount of money you'd have to spend to purchase all the games and software off of Steam or wherever else.
Could you expand on pre-apocalyptic? I could make a gamemode about washing dogs and a lake and technically it could be "pre-apocalyptic".
I actually meant for that theme to mean "right before an apocalypse". For example, a world in which nuclear could break out any second (Cold War Nuclear Submarine Simulator? Coop game where everyone has to vote whether or not to blow the other team up?). I tried to be as "loose" as possible with the themes, that way people could interpret them in different ways and have fun. Remember that I'm not the judge of how well you follow the theme, the players are.
I'd love to have three choices for theme. What does that hurt? Why must creativity be restricted to a theme in the first place, resulting in less gamemode variety?
I don't think I ever said how many themes I'm eliminating, if any at all (:
Regarding the rules; would I be able to take components from my own premade projects? I suppose you could make them open source now, as long as they stay open source until the competition is over. You'll also need to announce that you're using them. As for custom maps, you'll either need to try and find some that fit (I know of 3 or 4 that would work for Above the Clouds) or make one yourself. That being said, I know not everyone can make make maps and I'm considering allowing teams to participate (with their score reduced based on number of members, or something). --- Just wanted everyone to know that I fixed a small bug in the survey. People were being asked for contact information even if they didn't want to donate prizes. Sorry about that!
Since I wasn't asked to help out this time, I think I'll enter as a contestant which I haven't done before, feels pretty exciting!!
Since I wasn't asked to help out this time, I think I'll enter as a contestant which I haven't done before, feels pretty exciting!!
who are u??? Edit: According to Author you're a dog who can hand out gold memberships. Would you be interested in adding one to the prize pool?
Since I wasn't asked to help out this time, I think I'll enter as a contestant which I haven't done before, feels pretty exciting!!
If you don't make a gamemode about pugs in space or something I'm going to be disapointed.
If you don't make a gamemode about pugs in space or something I'm going to be disapointed.
Or pugs exploring the deep ocean for dog treats.
who are u??? Edit: According to Author you're a dog who can hand out gold memberships.
Or pugs exploring the deep ocean for dog treats.
While avoiding the evil octocats.
While avoiding the evil octocats.
We have a winner here! Go ahead and hand Niandra all the prizes. I'd say I hope teams are allowed, but I wouldn't know anyone to team up with :v:

You've entered into the contest however, so I think I'll talk to a different mod. That way you can just focus on developing and nothing else (:
I'm currently working with a few people to create a nice, in-game reviewing GUI so you can quickly review a gamemode while you play it. We're also creating a slick server hopper so you can bounce between gamemodes quickly. If you want to help, pay attention to https://github.com/ModMountain/august-2015-contest. Gamemode authors will not be required to embed the addons we create, the official Mod Mountain servers will have them built in. Also, if anyone has links to good resources, mostly assets (music, sprites, etc), feel free to link them. I'm going to make a nice list and put it on the Github repo so people can quickly find assets to use in their gamemode and focus on writing code. Anyone who contributes a large number of useful links may be eligible for a bronze tier prize (:
Again, I said this in the last thread and exploder took me up on the offer over Steam, but never used it from what I saw. But, I would be more than happy to provide hosting for either the entire competition, or whoever needs it, for free (just let me know how many slots you want). That way, developers could make sure their gamemodes/DLC works on a live environment and they have the resources to do whatever testing they would need. Any other accommodations can probably be met as well. The server is Linux and is hosted out of OvH in Montreal (great pings to US and EU), TCAdmin as well. Anyone who is interested or has questions, feel free to ask here or PM me on Steam and I will get you setup right away!
If anyone needs a model compiled for the game you can contact me. I also do view models such as weapons and shit. Best to contact me now while I am not working on anything.

I'm planning on hosting one server for each gamemode during the DLC phase (and maybe longer!). These servers will host the in-game reviewer. Anyone else is free to host the gamemodes though and the number of public servers might be factored into the score. I encourage developers to take Revenge up on his offer. It's important that your gamemode works on a Linux machine otherwise you'll end up looking bad on the official servers. There's also a good chance his hardware is similar to what I'll be running so it might be a good time to load test.
It would be really cool if gold was added as a prize to this compo so Author is less likely to kill me if I win the other one and take the gold.:s: Edit: And now I might have started a bidding war, fuck.
In case anyone needs any audio, there's a 10gb pack of royalty-free audio assets released by Sonniss a while ago. I haven't been able to find a use for any of it yet, but I haven't exactly been trying :v: Have a torrent link: http://sonniss.com/GameAudioGDC.torrent

I just got Steam set back up on my new phone, so I can't escape your messages now.

Adding it to the repository.
I'm shit at scripting, but I'm more than willing to sponsor when I get paid. If anyone wants a dedicated server hosted for their gamemode, let me know! (Hosted on a Windows VPS in LA)

Sounds awesome and by the looks of it, there are a price for everyone. Perfect timing as I got 1-1½ week empty in my calendar but with my luck lets see .. However before I sign up I want to know, will we be limited to 1 theme? I know, its purpose is to stop people from brainstorming before the contest .. however it's easier if we get a few to pick from.

I think that's the closest you can get.

This will be trimmed down to the 3 highest rated themes. You can see the results of the survey at https://modmountain.typeform.com/report/e8sdUQ/MQGn. Go ahead and brainstorm ideas now, post them here and maybe people can chime in. I'm almost done drafting the full rules which include how teams are going to be handled. Maybe if you and someone share a similar idea you can pair up (: Edit: Themes are also in the main post but here they are anyway: Beneath the Sea Deep Space Medieval Times Vibrant Dreamscape Ancient Egypt Spooky Forest Pre-Apocalyptic Above the Clouds

It's the only one that has people playing on the test server nearly all day. So you'd better barricade your house because soon Author will be climbing through yo windows, tryin' to snatch yo people up
I'm in; my gamemode in WGCC was shit. Having a more relaxed timeframe seems to be nice.
As promised, here's the current rules for teams: [DEL]- Teams of up to 5 people are permitted[/DEL] - One gamemode is to be submitted [DEL]- Your score will be reduced based on the size of your team[/DEL] - You will not receive extra prizes [DEL]Here is how scores will be reduced based on team size: 1 person team: 0% reduction 2 person team: 30% reduction 3 person team: 50% reduction 4 person team: 70% reduction 5 person team: 90% reduction[/DEL] [DEL]I will change these values as they are discussed. Originally I had a crazy complex formula that used exponentials and stuff but it was far too complicated.[/DEL] If you are going to be a part of a team, please select one person to be your team representative. Have them fill out the survey as they normally would, choosing "Gamemode Developer" as their role. Have them input the team size and select that will be representing a team. They will then be prompted to fill in the names of their teammates. Once the representative is done filling out the survey, each other team member must complete it too. Instead of choosing to be a representative, they will choose to join an existing team. They will then enter the name of their team's representative. Please do not join someone's team without asking. Edit: Forgot to mention that if you already registered you can fill the survey out a second time and it will overwrite your results. It's not too late to form a team! Edit 2: I have removed the score penalties and max team size. Please see http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1477973&p=48317314&viewfull=1#post48317314
