Warmelons: Outfit battleships with turrets, or form armies of melons.

You have to order them to move I think.
Edit:
They are not supposed to move around on their own.

Ok, thanks. But where could that null entity error come from?

I honestly have no idea where that's coming from. Someone else said they were getting null entity errors when they spawned a Warmelon, but it didn't impact the functionality in any way. Since I can see no reason for this error to exist (it doesn't happen to me) all I can do is hope a more experienced coder will provide an explanation.
Hey Megajohnny, awesome addon by the way :D:D
I have a few bugs (atleast I think?) to report, and a few suggestions.
Bugs
-As mentioned above, the laser melons give that error and the stool for them does not appear.
- Melons from the barracks are not commandable, but the command stool still selects them. I've had instances where I've selected a group and one has moved, but that's as far as it got.
- Zero grav melons don't obey orders in groups. They have to be controlled individually. This mainly happens with fighter melons. Maybe it's the same reason melons from the barracks don't seem to respond to commands in groups?
Suggestions
-Maybe make the melons from the barracks have an area around the barracks that they will chase and attack units in. Say 500 feet. That way they can fight, but won't stray too far
- I'm not sure if this will work, but maybe include another mode, besides zero G mode, that enables melons to fly without having them float to the top the minute they spawn
- Ability to choose what type of melon the barracks spawn/different types of barracks
- A siege melon that can only attack melon buildings and the cannons?
- Tone down the melon death? In large battles it gets a bit laggy
Just what I've picked up from playing it for the last hour. Once again, great mod!
EDIT: Oh, forgot this one. The melons weapons seem to do very little damage to props with CDS on. Even 4 cannon melons took a very long time to kill a very weak prop (combine barrier thing).
And someone definitely needs to set up a server for this :D
I've uploaded the 10.1 hotfix. I can't test it because I'm at school, but in theory it should fix the laser stool not showing up. Link here.

I'm in favor of this mod staying relatively simple.. however, I can't help but agree with some of the ideas I've seen.
As far as shields go, maybe we don't need an actual shield entity, but rather a sort of power core entity that broadcasts power over a certain radius, and adds a layer of 'armor' or something over the melon entities.
If any of you have played Star Wars: Galactic Battleground, you'd know what I mean. The shield generator didn't create an actual shield, it gave units and buildings a layer of shielding over their health. The "shield" would take damage instead of their normal health, unless the enemy's fire did "pierce" damage.. and the shield would recharge when it stopped taking damage.
This could probably be accomplished in Lua.
And to illustrate the shield radius, you could maybe have it colorize the units within it's ... radius.. give them a sort of shimmery gold outline, or something.
Also, the power core would add a bit of strategy; a device that you have to protect, but gives you a bit of a tactical advantage over a roaming, attacking army.
Also, a few pages back, someone suggested control points you could capture, that let you build a barracks. This could be used in conjunction with the shields.. somehow.
I also like the idea of a unit cap on certain units.. especially the cannons, because they're so ridiculously powerful.
I think we need barracks that can spawn different units. Again, with unit caps. I think it was Johnny who suggested each unit cost a certain amount of whatever resource. 3 for fighters, etc. Good idea.
Anyway, as far as the barracks spawning different units, it could be a selectable option in the.. option panel.. You'd have to make a different barracks for each type of unit you want to create. Kind of like that NPC spawning platform. (I use that a lot, heh)
Anyway. Sorry for the long post, just had to dump my ideas.
I think if the unit cap thing was done, it should be optional. So like the server admin can turn it on and set the unit cap and resource cost. That way, you'll still be able to muck around with it on single player and in private servers with friends, but also be able to play it fairly on online games.
I'm also frustrated at the barracks-spawned melons not roaming around and going after the enemy.
I hated that too. I redid them so they do it again. I am thinking about putting the stuff I edited/made for Warmelon to Gmod. But then again, noone in the Gmod community has done shit for me.

The lasers work fine but I see very wide "purple/black checkered" lasers. I am not sure if I am missing anything.
The Command Stool update is sort of broken since I cannot move any of the melons in large groups. I can only move them one by one and only if it says "Commanding One Melon" or something in those terms. So commanding more than one does not work.
Also the command stool could use a team select option. That way there is no confusion when accidentally choosing the wrong team melons.

So? You think anyone's done anything for Johnny? He's providing this awesome addon to us, out of the goodness of his heart. And I doubt he's gotten any sort of reward out of this. Just a bunch of people complaining "This doesn't work, you're doing it wrong." etc.
I mean, seriously. It's called karma, son.

I gave some good feedback on the fix, I really did not want to sound all greedy and whatnot.
I love Johnny's melon addon. Its very fun and I love how big it can really get. I speak in the terms of what is possible with the melons, battleships, stations, bases, etc.
Thanks for the addon Johnny.
My server is up... Regularly, and we have warmelons loaded in. If anyone wants to play on a [small] Australian server I'm more than willing to have a warmelon war with you.
Name:
Empty's 8-Bit Ownage
We aren't dedicated [still fixing the server computer.] and the IP is dynamic. Don't filter by region. We usually play gm_construct or gm_flatgrass. Search for our steam group if you want more info.
Yeah I didn't want to sound demanding of Johnny when I posted the bugs and suggestions, I don't think any of us intended that. It's an amazing mod and I just offered what I thought might help him make it better.
I also get the missing texture on the laser beam, and I can move melons in groups. However, if I have two groups of melons, each group attached to different props, say like two Battleships, and I select them both, only one will move.
A team selection for the command tool would be cool too.
Thanks for the laser hotfix Johnny.
yes indeed Johnny is doing us all a service lets all be nice to him and try to appreciate what he has done.
There is only one little thing that really is driving me insane, and that's the command stool only moving one melon at a time. It's alright for single vehicles, but when your trying to move multiple vehicles or armies it gets pretty annoying. I'm trying to change it myself, but to be honest I haven't a clue what I'm doing.
Edit: The +wmselect and wmorder commands that Johnny gave on the download page work for groups of melons, unlike the command stool. I'm happy now :)
Thanks so much Johnny!
I've been thinking about the barracks and the search and destroy function on its units. I've come up with the idea for two more options in the context panel.
Firstly, a distance from the barracks inside which its units will be called back to base to destroy any enemies in the range. Like a panic button, except it's 'shit guys enemies are coming get your asses back here now'
Also a range outside which barracks units will try to get nearer to the barracks, ie inside that sphere. So if you're making an aircraft carrier or something, and you wanted to keep the fighters in formation... yeah.
Both of those would be togglable, in case you don't want things like that to be happening.

"son"?
Johnny is not me. I am not Johnny. I am me. I will do things my way. Good for Johnny if he makes things for people. If I could make models or lua easily, I still would reconcider giving it to people because to me, most of the Gmod community are asshats.
Yes, it is karma, "son".
I wont argue that a lot of the people on Facepunch are assholes. But there are quite a few, like Johnny, who provide us with great addons, and hours of entertainment.
The point that I was trying to make is that, due to this site being full of said assholes, the community is short on appreciation for the hard work that people like Johnny do for the rest of us.
Meaning, I was hoping you'd see my point, and show a little appreciation, and stop with the attitude. It's totally uncalled for. It's disheartening.
But if you wanna do things your way, go for it. Fortunately, plenty of other folks in this thread are nice, and thanked Johnny, without being selfish, demanding assholes.
Random fighting?
But that Barracks stuff sounds cool Johnny, keep it up.
Hey what do I need to view these programmes that you made?
Edit:
I am at school with johnny never mind, I'll just ask.
Very nice Johnny. Keep up the good work. :D
Whats happening! No updates for ages!
By the way Johnny, is there anything you can do to make the melons a little less lag intensive? Online servers seem to hate them.
So...
Has this wonderful creation cease to amaze us?
Has this mod of Johnny's died?
It appears this thread has died a death. Although saying that, it may be resurrected like the Blastfungus thread (Oh how I hope it gets resurrected)
I wouldn't say it's died.. maybe just lapsed into unconsciousness while MegaJohnny is busy..? An addon this awesome can't die.
Well, you can never really know...
Good point.
I've been thinking, though.. aside from a few issues to fix, there's not much else that can really be done to this addon, without overcomplicating it, perhaps fatally.
You know the KISS rule: Keep it Simple, Stupid. I wholeheartedly agree with this.
This things are absolutely great! However, they really need to be expanded on. I am in full support of making a new game mode for it. I think it deserves to be put into a mini- RTS type thing. and they could definitely use some better range, AI, and variety. Still this is among one of my favorite mods.
However, i have had one sort of odd occurrence when used in conjunction. When you stick a great number of blue and red warmelons into a black wormhole, their properties are drastically changed. They come out white, unaffected by gravity, and they are trailing long smoke lines, giving them the general appearance of sperm. Barracks also come out white, and they will spawn the sperm-like melons, which will promptly fly off. After a while of playing with this phenomenon, i actually crashed my game by accidentally making way too many sperm. Needless to say, the entire situation was extremely amusing. But does anybody know what happened?
I have no Idea how to make them fly.
In the STool menu, there's an option to enable or disable gravity for the melons.
The regular fighters won't actually fly.. but the ones that the Barracks spawn will.
Otherwise they just roll along the ground.
