we need our own master server >.>, all this geolocation is killing communities
The ideal solution would be to get Valve to fix it. But I don't know that they care that much about it. OVH in North America definitely has issues when trying to list. :/ Which sucks since they seem to be the best anti-DDoS provider (that doesn't rape your wallet).

was the font rendering stuff really included in the last update?
was the font rendering stuff really included in the last update?
no [editline]1st April 2016[/editline] A note on that actually, turns out that some fonts seem to 'expose' characters that they haven't actually got any glyphs for. That meant that lots of russian characters were suddenly invisible. I've added a little bit of a hack that'll just use the fallback font when that appears to be the case. Notepad has the same issue because the fonts are at fault, but I don't like it working that way.
I've submitted a pull to make a whole bunch of improvements to the server list: https://github.com/garrynewman/garrysmod/pull/1149/ (EDIT: Already rejected) If that's too extreme, please consider an alternative from last year: https://github.com/garrynewman/garrysmod/pull/992 Either way should stop the issues with less popular (but unique) gamemodes dying. It would be good to see some Fretta-like servers again but people aren't going to stumble across them currently.

That doesn't accomplish much. The vast majority of my players say they joined because my server had more players then every other server, not because they just randomly saw it. Being that most people sort by players all this would do is make higher population gamemodes like darkrp further blot out small new gamemodes. Someone suggested awhile back that there be gamemode categories and I think that'd be a much better solution then grouping everything into one section.
As much as I'd love for my server which is currently at 110+ players to get the extra exposure that this would bring I don't think your PR will work as well as you think.

The only servers with a high player count and ranking are the ones who are already popular. How about maybe add a "Gamemode of the month" section with a description of the gamemode followed by a list of servers?
As much as I'd love for my server which is currently at 110+ players to get the extra exposure that this would bring I don't think your PR will work as well as you think.
+1 players aren't always looking for popularity, but may be looking for specific gamemodes. DaerthTealc, I understand that you're trying to think of new ways to bring exposure to new gamemodes, however, I personally believe that if they're all that unique and entertaining, they'll develop a playerbase on their on. Let me present two examples: Santos RP was at the very bottom of the list with 80 users connected to it at peak times, yet just about everybody knew about the project and wanted to play it due to its huge popularity. On the other hand, retarded DarkRP edits that were used for "UNIQUE Starwars RP" are peaking the charts under the starwarsrp, when the owners of these servers can't tell lua from their asshole - are you sure you'd want that presented to a new Garry's mod player? not to mention the fact that most new gamemodes will start out at the bottom of a list which now has thousands of dead servers, rather than about a hundred? (people make Sandbox servers just for the hell of it) Lastly, I would take Penguin's advice when it comes to turning down your proposition, that is because he's running the most unique and custom server I've seen under DarkRP to date. You typically never see his servers go under 60 users, which is peak times for servers like mine - he knows his shit.
How about maybe add a "Gamemode of the month" section with a description of the gamemode followed by a list of servers?
It would require active and some sort of unbiased maintenance to work well but I particularly like this idea. Have it hosted on the official site somewhere to grab the featured gamemode name and description. Whatever area on the server list it takes up could have a big button that says "Find a (x) server!" that filters to that gamemode maybe
If something gets done about DarkRP edits only, the list won't be as cluttered, because now half of the server list are just darkdm edits
Can lua workshop downloads obey cl_downloadfilter. I don't wanna join a server with it on just to have to be forced to download gb's of garbage models for a darkrp server
cl_downloadfilter none
Hey, remember that time when servers were vastly different and enjoyable? Me neither.
Hey, remember that time when servers were vastly different and enjoyable? Me neither.
JetBoom's servers were incredibly creative, unique, and fun, but I think they're dead now, thanks. Ctf, mario boxes, and buggy racing were some of the best fun I ever had. I haven't even seen them at all after the new browser. I think its ridiculous that the game list can't be sorted by name, or have games that you don't like blacklisted.

Everyone else is doing it.
they're dead now
90 players (as of posting this) is dead? That's easily enough to consider a community one of the top communities in this game.

I've noticed that Noxious uses a method to have his servers be seen around the world to get away from Geo limited listing. There's another community that does this also. Redirect servers. http://www.gametracker.com/search/garrysmod/?query=noxious Shows how far we have to go.

Due due to some copy and pasting & me getting fucked over noxiousnet acquired the technique too . Fair enough - JetBoom posses no knowledge as to what of the copied stuff actually makes it work, aka I still have a death switch. However, since LP still uses it I didn't use it. I was working on a full fledged source engine server emulator, which had quite a quick join time - But I lost it in a format, so only the client remains. just incase someone doesn't believe in the dickishness of this "mastermind":
Several questions arise in my head: who's JetBoom, who's Mr. Brightside, who has the "hack", and who doesn't? But the most prominent question of all is: why in the world does he think he'll get any favors at all talking like that?! sadly I'm fairly sure that's the only question without an actual answer...
Don't want to start drama, just bringing it up on how unfair it is and again how poor these listing restrictions are.

I can understand why Jet was annoyed - he's pretty much been searching for as long as I have for a solution to get around the geo-ip issues with limited success which for about half a year caused his servers to die. It wasn't until a move to the OVH network did things pick up (amongst other factors).

Not to forget, Alex is a really kind guy and considering JetBoom and him apperently have tried finding a solution together in the past - I could've seen him mirroring for Jet
Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying what Jet said or did is okay or fine but when you watch your servers fall apart because of something Valve did (and refuse to 'fix') it's genuinely kind of depressing.

Like Ley said, I considered mirroring for Jet after we'd spoken a lot of times about how we could get around the problem.
Haha, I just laughed my ass off at the last argument of util.ScreenShake.... In all seriousness though, this function seems to be implemented in C++ and not lua so I have no idea what the units are and what to change it to.
I might be wrong, but aren't Hammer Units the same things as Source Units?
I dunno, Robotboy655 added that part. [editline]3rd April 2016[/editline] double-post / merge-post depending on alignment of the planets I may have an idea about the server list. Now, whether we do this or not depends on how many of you agree, but we have to be coordinated if we do. It's directly based on a recent attempt to get a message across to EA, one which I'm not sure whether it was successful, and perhaps it's too soon to tell. Basically, we send Valve employees a lot of physical letters regarding this issue. I don't mean spam them, just, each one of us sends a letter to them. But the important thing is to send a physical letter, not an email. As old-fashioned as it sounds it's absolutely necessary. Feel free to watch the video I linked, starting at the timestamp I linked, for the various reasons and explanations (obviously not all will apply to this scenario). The first step (only step?) to getting Valve to care, is to let them know without a shadow of a doubt that this is an actual, real problem. The first thing we gotta do is to get the physical business mailing addresses of relevant Valve employees. With Valve's weird company structure that may not be an easy task, figuring out who's relevant and who isn't. If anyone has any leads, feel free to share... Edit: Oh, if anyone uses LinkedIn and can get a valve employee to notice them that way, do that too. I've never used LinkedIn but I hear it works sometimes.
[t]http://puu.sh/o5oM3.jpg[/t] Was the fix for this not pushed last re-update?
[t]http://puu.sh/o5oM3.jpg[/t] Was the fix for this not pushed last re-update?
It would have made the update non-optional. The fix is solid though, so you can expect it in the next update.
