Of all the small things you could do to attract players that's just dumb. I get 100+ players daily and I don't run downtown_v4c. It's not the map name it's the server.
Personally I am gonna have to agree with withered. When i used to host darkrp servers I would get no players if the map was not some form of rp_downtown. I know this because day one I set my server to it and got like 25 players. I changed because the map was to small for cars and then my player count just went down the drain.
I think one of the reasons this happens is because as far as I know rp_downtwon variations use only hl2 and css textures. While every other BETTER map uses like every single texture from any source game possible. This combines with kids who have no money to buy any other source games, kids who don't want to download new maps because of low attention spans, players with bad internet speeds, and rp_downtown just being a popular map, pretty much puts you at a huge disadvantage when switching maps.
This is just an assumption but I feel the reason your server took off so well is because you were there to feel the gap for the players that did not want to play on rp_downtown,so now they just now to automatically join yours.
i've run my server for almost 2 years now, spent 3500 hours coding on it, and the usual player count is 0-2.

I've been looking at all the stuff you've been doing and it honestly urks me that servers like yours get no players. I actually joined a couple of times to mess around but no on ever came on. I hope you get like some random explosion of players because I feel you deserve it.

it's happened a few times, the record is 18 at the same time, but it barely lasts a week
i don't really know what to do except spam forums which i'm not going to do

the obvious solution is to rename your gamemode to DarkRP and start selling admin for $10.
But like brandon said, the things you have on your server make my head implode, due to how awesome they are, but I guess 12 year olds much prefer to shoot everything in sight and yell for an admin :/ .

Could be for the fact that your server gives off the "Serious RP" vibe which not many people like these days

don't really know how i'd avoid that, i barely even know anything about rp stuff

Yeah it's the server.. you can code all the custom addons you want but if players don't like it, they wont stay. For example the 200 scriptfodder servers getting more players then you.
And WitheredPyre you want to spoof your map to get players? I get 70 players daily not using that version of downtown. Also if a player joins a server for v4c and sees its not v4c he will just leave anyway and probably won't want to join back because its a pretty deceiving thing to do.

Don't know how many times I need to tell you this, but you need to give people like $1000 for joining the steam group and schedule times where everyone joins every weekend. High player counts will bring more players, more group members, and higher playercounts.

Or just add "Need staff" to the title and 2 million starting cash and use sleek addons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You run a custom downtown_v2 and you used to run normal downtown_v2 didn't you? It definitely helps.
You run a custom downtown_v2 and you used to run normal downtown_v2 didn't you? It definitely helps.
I ran downtown_v4_exl, one of the less shitty edits. I never argued running downtown doesn't help but the idea that changing to your own self proclaimed better edit of v4c is going to magically impede your player count because it isn't the same map is just dumb.
Server location helps massively. Ever since I moved my servers to Texas (these servers were already US based) I've seen something like a 500% boost in player counts. Can thank Valve's geo-ip for that.

maybe a couple of years ago your server would exploded, but now with the current gmod playerbase I don't see this coming

But everyone on the server really likes the stuff you made. Your server is the only DarkRP server I actually play.
[sp]also fix the kim-jong shirt[/sp]
In my experience the majority of these tips are useless. You won't flick a single switch and suddenly have a massive influx of players.
I had no intention of running a DarkRP server. I was staff on a TTT server and the owner asked me about DarkRP(which I had very little experience with) so we took a look at a few servers. He threw up an 8 slot server for us to mess around on and get more familiar with.
In less than a week we had to up the slot count to 18 because there were no free slots for myself or the owner. At this point we had minor overlap in players with the TTT server(<3) and our server name was still "DarkRP" IiRC. I ended up learning DarkRP on the fly and was very attentive to the player base as I felt an obligation towards them. When the owner implemented donation ranks I was extremely uncomfortable but it wasn't my call or my wallet paying the bills. I teleported to each and every donor to tell them how thankful I was.
I kept messing around with coding for DarkRP and kept paying attention to the player base. I didn't play DarkRP, all that concerned me was coding and a fair playfield. I began to customize DarkRP and add fun little features. Within a month we had to up it to 28 slots.
I was VERY strict about my staff choices. I would sooner spend 12 hours a day administrating the server myself than appoint a less than acceptable staff member. I continued to implement custom features, treated my staff well while drawing very clear lines for demotion, and remained interactive and attentive to the player base.
Less than half a year later and we were 60/60 most weekdays on a non-mainstream(at the time at least) map. There was some luck, some attention from the custom features, but most of it was fostering a healthy community.
When I finally took a month long break to visit family who I hadn't seen in ~2 years the server face planted. Nobody in their right mind wanted to dedicate 8-10 hours daily to clean up every drop of spilled milk. I came back to a corrupting staff and a toxic, dwindling player base.
In my opinion the most important piece of the puzzle is the staff leader. If they can put up with the bullshit and manage a player base you've got a good starting point.
While your story is nice, the player base of darkRP is just toxic in general. It is full of small kids who want to whine and complain about every little rule. Seriously sometimes it becomes more about nailing someone for a small violation then actually playing the game.
These kids whine and whine until an admin comes to handle the situation. Often times it turns out the person didn't break the rule but the player was trying to delay the person from raiding them.
This occurs with RDM on the server all the time. I don't think people actually realize what RDM truly stands for. Most kids think it means if another players kills you on the server so they call RDM anytime someone else kills them. Often times they claim it's because they didn't utter the magic words needed to kill them (e.g. mug, warning, raid) in the correct fashion. The game is no longer about the experience but whining to admins about someone breaking rules. Sure true cases of RDM and other rules do happen but the majority of the time it's someone trying to get someone else in trouble for a rule they don't understand.
So yeah, you can have a dedicated staff team but after a while the staff is going to get burned out from trying to handle all of these cases. It's exhausting and frustrating to constantly deal with small kids who don't understand the rules. These kids are entitled and get upset when the person doesn't get punished in the fashion they want them to.
Since when was the Next Update thread for talking about stupid DarkRP nonsense.

Since there's nothing better to talk about in here considering we have a GitHub to post issues and requests.

Doesn't look like we disagree at all. At this point DarkRP simply has a large toxic community. The minority that I would consider a healthy player base just gets squashed.
A fair bit of the features I wrote up were made to cut through some of the bs("I was standing here facing there when I killed them!", but your recorded positions say otherwise etc). But you can only do so much before you have to sit the children down and see what would make them stop pouting.
But I agree with YourStalker, this isn't the thread for this. Just nice to attempt to have a productive talk rather than the usual moaning.

Someone is trying to exploit your server.

afaik it's just someone sending a query such as A2S_PLAYER with an invalid challenge number length.

Can something be done about that exploit that gives people the Real Garry achievement? Some servers are starting to abuse it to to hoard players.

Blame Ley, he went to like 100+ servers doing that.
Blame Ley, he went to like 100+ servers doing that.
Except that I didn't :v:
I reported the exploit like 2-3 times now and only 1 line needs to be changed to fix it.
Not sure where you're getting the 100+ servers from though, considering I went to like 4-5 :v.
~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/i386/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu $ ln -s /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libstdc++.so.6.0.21 libstdc++.so.6
I had to do this for my .dll module to work. Do you honestly know how mad I am at Valve right now? Could you somehow make it so that the distro's libstdc++ is used instead of steam's OUT OF DATE ones?

I think there exists something like an achievement hack, because I have seen so many players having every single achievement, even without uploading a single workshop file or playing sandbox. Maybe this can get fixed?

Steam Achievement Manager. It's not GMod specific.

And not to mention that the server can make clients unlock every achievement & clients can pretend to get achievements even though they didn't ( no spam though, achievement spam got fixed. )
