I guess they were just too dumb to add a fastdl
Not sure, weren't the content packs like 800 MB?
tbh always updating a zip file and putting that somewhere on your site is probably harder than writing a resource.AddFile script and a fastdl

Meh, you can make a zip autogenerate itself every time you upload new content, isn't that difficult.
-edit-
at least, I'm the kind of guy that acts like "If code can do it, why should I do it myself?"
I used to write .php scripts to write SQL queries for me, that I had to execute in Navicat.
I think people are looking at this as a combination of the workshop plus garrysmod.org plus full revision support for large projects which I'm going to add is an unrealistic view. Yes, it should support gamemodes and RELATIVELY SMALL addons and other goodies. Support for large scale projects like TDM cars and Neurotec is ... difficult to say the least. Allowing people to upload such large projects is a bit silly.
So if this website isn't going to be a better version of garrysmod.org and the workshop then why are you guys wasting your time making it. I'm not saying allow 30gb uploads per person but maybe add a few exceptions for the massive addons that deserve the space for the amount of work they put into them. It's also a pain in the ass on garrysmod.org when I go to download a map and it's just a text file leading to a mediafire download link. It's also worse on the workshop since none of those big maps get any attention since they can't even upload a txt file linking somewhere.

I'm not trying to say no, its just.. 10gb.. Like what the actual hell. Anyway, if the creator/s are happy with and FTP setup, that basically solves the problem.

Could do with somebody to do the binary/gui side in the future (communicating with the api/downloading files/running scripts to copy files etc), that part isn't as interesting to me as the web stuff/api.
(This is nothing to do with the revamp, just dependency management)
So have you guys gathered a team that is working on it? Who will be able to release addons there?
So have you guys gathered a team that is working on it? Who will be able to release addons there?
Originally they were planning to make a coderhire section where only "known" users could release stuff, but now they're making a new garrysmod.org so I suppose everyone will be able to use it.
Allowing everyone to submit/contribute but also having a sort of moderator team or something to enforce a level of standards is the best way to go, in my opinion.
I could provide a norwegian download location with 8TB space for $18/month.
(price will increase for each 2TB used, because 8TB is all the space i have, and i need to be able to continously upgrade that if it's getting used fast.)

apparently Gran already said this, oops
Now who is going to fund this?
Now who is going to fund this?
probably donations
Now who is going to fund this?
Kickstarter obviously.
Ads on the site. Nobody likes ads but with enough visits to the site, it might be viable.
Also, don't waste money storing the content on the site itself when you can link to github.
Set of tiles, each tile when clicked gets you the project from Github. Maybe a dropdown to select the version which corresponds to the tagged versions within each git repository.
No file size limits to worry about, and things can be versioned.
Are we going with the idea that you need to pass a Lua test to upload?
Nothing major, just a one time test to ward of all the skiddies

Well ads will be useless. I and many many other people have adblock.
Edit
Adzter why did you rate me dumb?

Then what about mappers and modellers?
Then what about mappers and modellers?
Basic test according to what type of thing your uploading
One time for that specific type

How hard is it to do this?

Lol what would it look like?
How hard is it to do this?
Pretty sure nobody does this (unless the site blocks adblock users somehow).
Pretty sure nobody does this (unless the site blocks adblock users somehow).
I do for sites I support that don't have annoying ass ads.
No ads? The site won't receive sufficient upkeep money from donations while the workshop exists - unless it is a major improvement over the workshop or has some related benefit making it worth it... Some kind of facebook integration or something - that's the stuff people go for these days amirite?

No one is going to disable adblock just for this website.
Maybe there will be a few on this page but in general people won't do it.

If there are sponsors or donations I think it would be fine.
PS: Can't say it's enough since I don't know how expensive it will be.
I also don't have any idea how exspensive it will be can somewanne give a +-prize
It will be expensive unless it is used as a site which points at github. Transferring files to thousands of users directly adds up. Data can be expensive!

The problem is that we can't upload big maps on github.

Because your statement is dumb, if ads are 'useless' then why are they still used as commonly as they are. Sure there's people that run adblock but there's still a major amount of people that don't, furthermore a lot of people actually enable ads for certain sites or donate to get rid of them and support the site. Happens very often on Twitch, well, not sure if it does any more after the whole content-id fiasco.
As long as the ads aren't obtrusive ( eg, no pictures, no flash, no sound, no video - just text ) I don't mind. It's the adwords shit that underlines half the words on the page for a targeted ad, videos / audio ads that start playing automatically with audio, things that pop up on the screen and demand my attention before I can view the rest of the page, or quite possibly the worst - ads that redirect me to other pages.
Putting ads on a site to make money is a great way to ruin the site, imo.
