Because your statement is dumb, if ads are 'useless' then why are they still used as commonly as they are. Sure there's people that run adblock but there's still a major amount of people that don't, furthermore a lot of people actually enable ads for certain sites or donate to get rid of them and support the site. Happens very often on Twitch, well, not sure if it does any more after the whole content-id fiasco.
Twitch is a famous site. They probably get special advertisment deals that is so much better than like google adsense. So it's worth putting them there.
As long as the ads aren't obtrusive ( eg, no pictures, no flash, no sound, no video - just text ) I don't mind. It's the adwords shit that underlines half the words on the page for a targeted ad, videos / audio ads that start playing automatically with audio, things that pop up on the screen and demand my attention before I can view the rest of the page, or quite possibly the worst - ads that redirect me to other pages.
Putting ads on a site to make money is a great way to ruin the site, imo.
if I'm right. You earn very very little from text ads. You need to have like 1thousand clicks to get like one dollar or mabye 10thousands views to get one dollar.
Basically the sort of adverts Coderhire does; ones that relevant, non-obtrusive and actually look quite nice design wise

I'm sure some of the many thousands of Garry's Mod hosting providers that popup everyday would love some advertising space.
Something like:
Free - Blue Member
✓ No concurrent downloads
✓ Normal priority in approval queue
✓ Some Low Size file size limit ( 10mb? )
$X - Gold Member
✓ A Few Concurrent downlaods
✓ High priority in approval queue
✓ Some Huge Size file size limit
Would be better than ads, especially if X is in the 0-10 range.
Things that would be excellent:
Allow us to upload delta patches and apply them to the addon, so I don't have to reupload a 100mb addon to correct a simple bug that was missed.
Allow us to use formats other than deflate ( and provide links to software that can extract the archives ) - I'd greatly love to use lzma or other methods.
Essentially, I'd like it to be as similar to garrysmod.org as could be gotten away with, just smarter.
I know we're trying to focus more on the back end at the moment but since those that are creative don't have a lot to do I started to design for a header or a navbar styled thing, anyway let me know what you think. Just had to use the letters 'GM' for now since I've no idea what's happening with domains, names, etc:

(heavily based off Richtofen's design, I thought it looked great)
Restricting things like filesize is dumb, we wanna encourage people to make their dreams true, not make their small file dreams come true

That sounds alot better, and if the users don't know how to compress their uploads that is on them. Maybe have like link to a tutorial next to the amount of MB's they have left to show them the best compression methods to save storage space.

I've been working on design mock up since i know nothing about the back end of the website. Feel free to give criticism.

Too similar to Coderhire and Cybergmod, get rid of the hexagon idea please.
But it's actually not that bad. I would maybe make that darker blue border a bit more thin though.
If you have a feature or request, please post a new issue here: https://github.com/gmodcoders/gmodscripts-site-features/issues as to be sure that things aren't buried under other posts, in the thread!

If you want to make a website like garrysmod.org then this is a bad idea because people are not going to buy like a subscription just to be able to upload things for free. Even if it would be one time pay a lot of people might not be able to pay because they don't have paypal.
Huge addons are terrible- server owners using them lose out on so many players who aren't down for looking at a loading screen for a few hours. 10GB for a car addon is ridiculous, make each car a seperate download or something.
Srs? Talking about Each Car, Tank, Plane , Naval And Helicopter's doing a Seperate Download? First play Neurotec than give an Opinion. Its a huge mod yes, but the entities and scripts are large as crazy! we can't change that but telling us to make each car seperate? just pissing me off.
There is no discrimination. 10gb of content is ridiculous regardless of if the host can spare it or not. Thats literally the size of a WoW/EvE Online patch. Break your content up into smaller pieces or something.

Optimize your content.
Srs Optimize your content? same as nazer it just pissing me off people telling to Optimize, Its loads of work and with the hundred scripted vehicles and entities. Its hard, but as i told Nazer first play Neurotec ;)

To all, Of this forum or the entire Garry's mod Community
Stop Comparing TDM , Scars ect with Neurotec maybe the size but not the Gameplay, It's maybe big but play it than give an Opinion right? Yes its 10gb or bigger but if you actully play Neurotec you feel its an Entire diffrent Military Simulation Garry's mod.

Or, you know, CoderHire?
10mb? 200mb makes more sense, 500mb for donators.
Yeah, especially if you're going to take map-makers and modelers into consideration.
so we dont like hexagons...
because we want to be better than Workshop and garrysmod.org but not look like coderhire or cybergmod...
because 6+1 > 6...
because six was afraid of seven...
ive got it.
behold..
stop limiting my downloads ya dumb twats
Yeah, imagine if you make an huge-as-fuck map but somehow better than No-NPC city- I mean gm_bigcity. Someone in the workshop said about bigcity with 4 towers (really don't know the name of the map right now :v:) Pretty cool and yeah, nodes nodes everywhere, strider nodes, air nodes etc; a lot of scripted shit. Oh no! it's fucking 40mb and the filesize is only 10mb! So, pay for something you made? It's like buying someone something and then he says: "Thank you, now give me more money beacuse i sold it to you." rate me dumb if you want :v:
stop limiting my downloads ya dumb twats
in the challengers corner we have a polished up, subscription based version of garrysmod.org with crippling file size limits. In the home corner we have the steam workshop which is totally free, has a very reasonable filesize limit and can be used in tandem with the resource.addfile function (which is an absoloute godsend for those who don't want to deal with fastdls overall shittiness).
Gee guys this looks like its gonna be a pretty intense match :v:
Yes, StolenShit.org revamped is a great idea. :zoid:
I could provide a norwegian download location with 8TB space for $18/month.

Try testing speed in different countries and speedtest servers that is not being hosted by your ISP.

We run Neuro-Tec on our server and people are completely adapting to it (And definitely not bitchin')... Players who have it enjoy it thoroughly, and others show interest. I don't know how this would be an upgraded garrysmod.org if we couldn't star some very great mods out there, wouldn't it be just like the workshop with only a LITTLE more file size? "10mb? 200mb makes more sense, 500mb for donators." If the problem is people spamming a whole load of crap in one thing is the problem, then have moderators who would determine whether a mod of a certain size is worth being displayed exclusively.
This whole talk about file size limits piss me off. What if my addon is 244mb do i have to pay just for 40 more mb?
If download size is an issue, why don't we use it as a way of torrenting addons?
Multiple mirrors links? like dropbox, torrent, mediafire and the same page...But i think that this would cause problems with broken links
Multiple mirrors links? like dropbox, torrent, mediafire and the same page...But i think that this would cause problems with broken links
It may but people can vote the links as working or not - also, if an addon is popular, there is more chance that people are seeding it. No solution would be perfect but it would get the traffic right down.
EDIT: I am starting to think this project *might not* work out - because:
- Nobody wants adverts
- Nobody wants to pay.
The site won't be able to run unless someone is supporting it.
It won't survive on donations while the workshop is running. Sorry to sound negative, I want this to be successful but this sounds like a bit of a blocker...
limiting download size is dumb. limiting download speed, parallel downloads etc is a better idea
