What would the theme entail? Would it be a strict dictation or lenient?
What would the theme entail? Would it be a strict dictation or lenient?
I'm gonna assume it'll be lenient, because if it were to be super strict it would ruin the creativity for must of us.
Then again, creativity is born from limitations.
Stricter themes may be easier from a judging standpoint as well. The issue is when people don't like the theme and don't feel like making it work, they drop out.
Meant to ask before, are we allowed to use fretta as a base or nah (easier to get this clarified now rather than later)
Yeah, use weapons base from workshop too and sents from garrysmod.org
Yeah, use weapons base from workshop too and sents from garrysmod.org
already asked about using another weapon base from the workshop there wasn't a "no" but i doubt it'd be allowed.
I was being sarcastic, i don't think there shouldn't be allowed using fretta as basse, it's almost %50 of gameplay flow
Yeah, use weapons base from workshop too and sents from garrysmod.org
No need to get the sass out, it was just a question. It'd open the contest to more people and the last really popular contest was based around fretta and because of that we got a great few gamemodes out of it. As I said, better clear it up now rather than later.
As I have in the original post, we're going to allow only Sandbox or the base gamemode as your base gamemode.
What if it's a gamemode I've been working on for a long while that depends heavily on other's assets? It's a unique TDM-like gamemode (it's more in-depth that just straight-up TDM, though that might be the only finished section of it by the time the end of the competition roles around) but the weapons are from someone else's pack (because the weapons are amazing) along with a few other things. The gamemode itself is still my own, I'm writing all that shit from scratch, but I use outside resources for the guns, sounds ripped from other games, etc.
And if we end up losing, will we still be required to give away the gamemode? I was initially planning on running the gamemode on my own server so as to remove the hassle of making it compatible with EVERY weapon pack (plus the pack I'm using has unique features that allow for my gamemode to be as cool as it will be), but now that I know of this competition I want to participate in the community.

As you can see in the original post - you must start when the start date is settled. So your gamemode instantly would not count there.
We've also discussed weapon bases being a no-no, and you're very vague about "a few other things".

Again, the weapon base shouldn't need to factor in to the gamemode, it's just the gamemode is dependent on the weapon base (because it's a shooter gamemode). I'm asking if the circumstances my gamemode is being made in will disqualify it for entry.
As for the start date: I'm an incredibly slow coder (this is my first project ever and I've been working on it since April-ish of this year). I wouldn't be able to do very much in 1 month, so take that as you will.
As for "a few other things," its assets such as HUD elements and sounds ripped from other games.

I answered you in my previous post - no, it would not qualify.
I answered you in my previous post - no, it would not qualify.
Well I'm down to judge then. Just provide a set "day of judgement" at least a week ahead of time and I can ensure I'm free that evening (I'm presuming it's during the evening).

I know it's early but please be very very specific with these things at the announcement date. A full list of allowed and disallowed things would be very nice.
For instance, I haven't the slightest clue how to make models or record decent sound bytes. Furthermore, I'd prefer not to limit my gamemode with gm_flatgrass or gm_construct.
So are free sound clips, textures, models, etc. allowed as long as their open source license is upheld?
You need not answer right now but please create a clear policy by the time the competition starts.

I completely agree. I'm an absolute newb to making Garry's Mod gamemodes, so planning is crucial for me here. Perhaps OP could discuss with the judges what should and shouldn't be allowed.
Are we allowed to use JetBoom's AnimBoneLib (or maybe PAC3 as a whole?)
https://github.com/JetBoom/animationsapi
I had updated the OP a few days ago, but I can put better clarification on the rules page of the website.
Assets such as models/materials will not be judged. If you want to include them, that's great, but they will not affect your score.
So anything regarding materials/models/sounds/maps that are open source are allowed, if proper credit is given where it is due.
I would have also assumed that people would understand that they can't start on their gamemode before the contest actually starts, seeing as that is not fair to other people, and we've yet to announce the theme.
I'd ask that a list of criteria be created for judgement over the gamemodes. Because different materials/models/sounds/maps are allowed, those CAN influence how a gamemode may be perceived, and as such, a strict set of guidelines concerning the criteria for judgement can be used to alleviate that.

If you check the OP I've already stated that the models/assets will not influence the decision of the core grade, as we're more focused on gameplay.
I'm teamed with Lego guy [del]and someone else who's name I have yet to remember[/del] (No wonder I couldn't remember the other guy's name, I'm in a team of 2).
Id be up for streaming the competition on Twitch or whatever, and have the judges on a discord channel so viewers can hear what they have to say.

That's crazy... There's just no way...
...
It's spelled "whose".

I was planning on streaming during the judging, as well as allowing anyone to sit in the discord (although they will not have talk privileges if they are not the developer/team, or a judge).
This is to be as transparent about how it's going, and to give everyone a chance to enjoy it.
I was going to stream via YouTube.
I will try to be sober at the time.

Are you drinking because of how much of a failure you've been in the gmod community?

Right, moving on...
Will the theme be a style like last year? Cartoon was kind of lame since it was really just something most people (including myself) threw in as an afterthought.
I think something like "Round Based" or "Teams" or "Asymmetrical" would be more interesting. Something like a gameplay theme, not a stylistic theme.
Just looking at the past themes from Lundum Dare here is a pretty good example of themes that are specific enough to discourage planned gamemodes but broad enough (i.e. open to interpretation) to encourage creativity.
I'm avoiding saying much about the theme, as obviously any hints will give it away. Just trust that I will make it to the best of my ability.
