IANAL but that doesn't sound like a legal thing to do. Legal aside I also think it'd cause more harm than.. anti-harm. It doesn't even accomplish any good. Let's not drag anyone else down into this shitty feud. If you meant that they should only make an empty threat to do that, well, it's an empty one. Probably won't accomplish anything. Plus this is about the most unprofessional option possible, there is no chance in hell you'd convince RB to do that. [editline]2nd April 2017[/editline] Garry's Mod needs to be as welcoming as possible IMO, and making enemies with major server hosting companies is unlikely to fare well.
Again, I didn't say it was a good option. Just a very very far off last resort.
I said to ban their whole range of IPs. That's a whole lot of angry customers who suddenly got dropped that they now have to deal with. edit: And I don't imagine that they'd want to lose out on the (atleast depending on the day/time) tenth most popular game on steam.
Range of IP's would be the most flawed thing to do and I doubt OVH of all company's is gonna bow down to threats like "If you don't boot this customer we'll ban all these IP's of yours. I doubt Garry would allow Robot or Willox even attempt something like that, due to the amount of backlash that could come from it.
Again, I didn't say it was a good option. Just a very very far off last resort.
It's not even a last resort imo. Its the equivalent of DDoSing a person because he or she keeps going from server to server stalking you. Not the best analogy but sue me its 10:30pm and I'm tired. I've listed the most plausible solution: rely on associating game servers to steam accounts, and utilize game bans to strip servers from the master server list.
That would suck too. I have an alternative suggestion: hire an unpaid intern whose sole job is to keep blacklisting penguin's servers over and over! He'll love doing it because it's a GAME DEV JOB and it would look great on his resume! [sp](or she)[/sp]
I would take that job for the pure satisfaction /s
I would take that job for the pure satisfaction /s
Same, except without the /s. I'd be lying if I said I take no satisfaction in seeing his community get blacklisted for his actions, but I've avoided making that apparent for a while because I'm trying to remain as neutral as I can be while remaining passionate about my opinion. Or in other words, I've tried to not be insulting or personally attacking penguin this entire time, as much as it doesn't appear that way.
Pretty sure PMing a mod can get you a rename.
Wait, you can do that?!? I've been stuck with "Redfiend" all this time for no reason? Who do I PM to get changed to Shigbeard_?
Wait, you can do that?!? I've been stuck with "Redfiend" all this time for no reason? Who do I PM to get changed to Shigbeard_?
:snip: Maybe I shouldn't spell it out that blatantly. Let's just say that moderators probably can't change your username.
Honestly, I think the bot suggested is the best way we can handle this without changing the system.
Could make a bot that joins the top 10 servers and bans any that take the program to his main server. Run it for a month till he gives up.

Honestly, I think the bot suggested is the best way we can handle this without changing the system.
He will find a workaround for any TECHNICAL deterrent we can throw at him. Only thing he can't work around is humans. Also I'm sure he's enjoying us discussing this. Let's change the subject! What's up with Awesomium? [editline]2nd April 2017[/editline] Did any one of the devs try asking Valve about using the Steam-provided web browser thing without having the users automatically log in?
honestly i think this is the best way to solve this problem
honestly i think this is the best way to solve this problem
Superi0r (this might even score him bonus swag points with his target audience) Suрerior Superiоr etc etc, and I didn't even get into 'servers' yet.

what a fucking terrible idea :chillout:
Did you guys really not expect him to start swapping IPs? Even if registering a server becomes required (which it won't) he'd just keep buying the game over and over. There's nothing he can't change to curcumvent the ban.
Did you guys really not expect him to start swapping IPs? Even if registering a server becomes required (which it won't) he'd just keep buying the game over and over. There's nothing he can't change to curcumvent the ban.
Doesnt mean he should be ignored
Doesnt mean he should be ignored
lets ban whole ip ranges for gmods largest host and every server with the word superior in the title!

make every server require GSLT/jump through some hoops because of 1 guy!
So everyone giving their best solutions... I still think the command "connect" should be blocked. Yes this has been said a lot of times. A potential is to implement a window, so when the server tries to use the command "connect" put a box in the middle of your screen allowing you to accept and decline. (Lua should not be able to interact with this box.)(Also while you are at it make it so they can only make the box appear once every like 5 minutes.)(And make it not block all other windows either. Or make a third option that says disconnect.)

Either way there are ways to do it without that command, and then there are ways to evade the "blacklist"

I just checked they use this:
LocalPlayer():ConCommand('connect ' .. info.ServerIP)

I just checked they use this:
LocalPlayer():ConCommand('connect ' .. info.ServerIP)

There are other ways, such as opening a webpage that uses a steam://connect/ipaddress:port protocol.
From http://www.garrysmod.com/terms/ is technically being broken.
My pitchfork is lubed up and ready. To the hosts!
Back in the day I managed to get several of SethHack's hosts to kick him off after he DDOSed Facepunch, so telling them "this guy is breaking the terms of service of a video game" is apparently justification enough. I mean, then he attempted to SWAT me, so maybe that's not the right route to go down.
Do remember that was a long time ago and may very well of been small time company's and not large ones like Ovh and such. If I am not mistaken they still aren't breaking a game's TOS, if I'm right? If not feel free to correct me.
Jesus' Cornflakes I mention the nuclear option and suddenly it's the 1980's/Cuban Missile Crisis all over again. edit: And just like the nuclear option, the option isn't there to be actually used. It's to be used as a deterrent for anyone who might start doing stupid shit and to convince people who DO have close power over them to think otherwise.
Banning the IPs of the server might be good for now. There should still be a way out for him. He should still be able to decide to run his server legitimately, without redirect or proxy servers. We won't believe he would do that for long, but he'd easily be able to prove us otherwise. Make it impossible for him to say that we're unreasonable.

Stop throwing words around like you're trying to make yourself seem important.
