Before using soft lamps you should get to a point where your lighting is excellent with just normal lamps, the only thing soft lamps give you is convenience when it comes to utilizing soft shadows, which are not necessary for good looking lighting

What Viox said, also don't use soft lamps on maps with lighting, they're designed for lightless maps
