What happened to the "barely scripted" roleplaying?
Well I don't like the idea of giving people access to the entire prop menu, I prefer that the props to be used can be spawned inside the map. This opens up a job to sell props, and people will be more creative when they only have access to a limited choise of props.
The physgun is something that should be restricted and only the right-click button of the gravity gun should be available. The toolguns should be restricted to simple toolguns like winches and ropes, so people don't build crazy contraptions with hoverballs and thrusters.
This is all just my opinion of course.
No they won't. Most of the time they will just get pissed off and leave. It's also very restricting on creativity. There is only so much you can do with a melon, a microwave, and a 2x4. Especially on bigger maps that are meant for RLRP specifically. Take my map latest endeavor for instance, evocity2v2 LLE(Less Lag Edition). Huge map, almost all empty shops.
You are telling me people can be creative on something like that with a small list of props, barely any tools, and no physgun. It's very hard to build anything without a physgun. Tools are important, some are useless like most of the time hoverballs are, but what if someones making a large boat or something, evocity has a lake. Maybe there's a recovery mission going on and someone built a barge with a crane. Probably needs hoverballs to float. I do agree that physgun punting should be disabled. Other than that nothing should be restricted.
It should be the server owner(s) and administrators job to enforce that no retardation is going on. What is going on sounds like that whole one person fucks up no one gets anything mentality they like to do in schools. It shouldn't be that way. If people minge, don't RP, then kick or ban them. Pretty soon there will be no one left to kick or ban problem solved.
I will be putting the server up tonight. Anyone have any map suggestions? It'll only be a 16 slot so big maps are out of the question. The style will be RLRP.
It would be interesting to have some fairly obvious RP questions in there, too. Maybe a match-the-acronyms-to-the-definitions section. Also, admins should be able to set what the acceptable score to enter is. We all know a certain script with an intro quiz that annoys a lot of people because it doesn't allow any mistakes.
I nearly finished it but a migraine kicked in so I went to bed.
Rp_hometown is good for few people.
Rp_downtown is nice too, you can pick an older(smaller) version if you think it's too big.
Start a small tight knit community with friends put up a small server and be in it a lot. People join servers with people. If they don't like the server they will leave but you will get a few that really like it.
This is by far the best way I've found of getting decent RP.
I think people want good RP with 60 people, and you just can't with that many people, too many chances for minges, difference in opinion on what's going on in the RP, normal shit people get mad over.
It just doesn't work. I only RP with friends now, locking the server down tight with a password, only time I let people on is the few that see my wall of text rants and are interested, got one good one from that so far.

Thank you for your opinion.
The reason I wouldn't want hoverballs and thrusters in is because people will just use it to build flying fortresses and very fast moving vehicles. As far as I know those 2 tools are really not needed.
I'm not saying almost every prop should be restricted, but if people place 3 big red containers together and call it their hideout it takes away detail and map space.
Lots of props are fine, but some are just too big or not related to the theme of the map to be used on roleplay in my opinion.

I would suggest Oviscity for this size, it's got everything needed, even if it is a little boring.
Rp_oviscity is probably the best candidate , it's not too big, not too small, has a shop with ready made props, the props that you need for roleplay. Has a good police department and a nice few hideaways for criminals.
rp_oviscity or hometown, even smallcorner could work...
But please don't use downtown_v2 :ohdear:
Oviscity or hometown. Great maps, perfect size.
A few years ago it was possible to join a server running a very simple script and use your imagination to roleplay something like a shopkeeper. Nowadays most people can't even do that unless the script includes it as a feature. What, you mean there's no snazzy interface and inventory system? Whatever happened to /give 30 and gravgunning a prop then taking it to your apartment/house/flat/hobo den? THAT is roleplay my friends! Sure it's not polished, but using the basic features of the game adds to the charm. It also aids the comedy with it's awfulness (remember, characters in Gmod RP aren't able to touch anything without their 'ickle grav gun :v:)
Has using the available resources suddenly become boring? Sure Gmod10 has awesome capabilities, but with all these "advanced" scripts chucking more and more features in people's faces, players are using their imaginations less.
It seems all the stuff out today is about who can make the script handle as much as possible. Stuff like money or keys I can understand perfectly well - they're both small enough to be "invisible" as far as props/gameplay is concerned.
As more stuff is "scriptalised", people will use their imaginations less. When everyone's trying to make their script better than everyone else's it just ends up a shitfest. By the end of it, nobody will know how to roleplay unless the script does it for them.
What can be done to keep people's imagination fresh?
You can't complain. You shut down Gmod Central..
Really you can't.
I bet if we gave you a day where you could time travel and view Gmod Central and PERP you would think PERP is better. (IF the admins were half-assed.)
The script adds very.. Very cool and nifty features like tornados. It is unique because it damages you both OOCLy and ICLy. Its things like this that make it like that.
I mean if you really wanted to you could just put SGRP back up on a 16 slot UK RP server.
Oh wait I forgot..
Nobody visits communities without a high-tech script anymore because its extremely bland.
Its the equivalent to saying you prefer a 1990s ford pickup truck over a 2009 Ferrari F10.
Me and my friends RP on a build server (204.27.62.227:27016 btw) and its pretty fun and if there's anyone on its most likely gonna be an admin. we usually do it on gm_bigcity or gm_mobenix_v3_final
Thats why i left roleplay right after gmod 9
I don't mind roleplaying with my imagination, I'd gladly oblige if we ever find one, But sadly most people aren't willing to script for free, as in, All the experienced scripters could finish this under a week, but they want to charge money, but their work is reliable, while the inexperienced will probably take a month and probably are not reliable.
Now, If there is one, give me the IP, I will gladly go to it.

We're talking about "barely scripted" RP here. PERP is basically an RPG with more gimmicky features. Now I'm not saying those features are bad, I'm saying they're unrelated to this topic.
The people who find scripts without loads of features bland shouldn't even be replying to a thread about less-scripted features.
Its the equivalent to saying you prefer a 1990s ford pickup truck over a 2009 Ferrari F10.
Depends what your tastes are. I'm pretty sure the same applies here too.
Well. today I was in OfficeRP (It's just DarkRP but in cs_office_extended_gm) and I was a Waffles Shop Owner (Just a rounded prop with squarish texture and a bit orange with white) I sold waffles to many people in the server (Thanks Share prop tool :D) until an admin came and told me that my waffles were lagging the server, I had to remove everything and I didn't know what to do...
There's people that can't understad how a simple prop can be a waffle or a melon prop be food, I say, if the waffle was a entity food I would sell waffles until I leave the server.

Not really, what if the 2009 Ferrari is so full up of random crap you can't even get your hands to the steering wheel to drive it, and then when you do try to drive it, it's really fucking slow because there's loads of...I dunno people clinging to the back(bad metaphor for 50+ shitty DarkRP servers).
Anyway, I grew fond of that pickup truck so go drive your little Gayarri F10 off a cliff.
i agree with you
Nori - i ment i did not read the replys if you lookedi replyed to the op - i agreed with him

True "roleplaying" in Gmod has consistently stayed the same size. This thread of course discusses what people like to identify as "GmodRP" and how it has progressively taken steps to incorporate more gameplay and action rather than story telling and acting out things for the sake of roleplaying. Since 2005, people have always been complaining about the lack of roleplay in roleplay servers, and you people seem to have forgotten that shitty roleplay servers where people minge and shoot eachother have DOMINATED "GmodRP" since pretty much it existed. In 2005, there was Steve's RP, the much hated minge RP community, which is pretty much comparable to any old DarkRP community today. Steve's RP was the most popular "RP" community out there even back then. People have always flocked and preferred these minge RP communities rather than actual serious RP communities that carry strict and complicated roleplaying guidelines, it's not a new trend that started in Gmod10 and its potential for more vastly complicated scripts; it has simply always been like that.
The problem is not the scripts, the problem is the community that plays Gmod. A small percentage of community are truly devoted to roleplaying (like text RP or whatever the fuck), a larger percent dedicated to the semi-RP/semi-gameplay type deal like TnB and Necropolis, and the largest percent dedicated to DarkRP, etc.. It's always been like this. True serious RP has always been the least popular, and people for years have been calling it "dead", it's always been dead, and it will always be dead. There was never a point where it was ever really popular. It was as dead 5 years ago as it is today. People still do it of course, I'm not saying they don't, but it's on a small scale. You won't find a huge community, or even a moderately sized one dedicated to it.
Things in GmodRP have never changed, everything has stayed the same. What has especially stayed the same is all the complaining about how bad RP in Gmod has gotten, and how scripts have taken over. I heard the exact same shit 5 years ago.

The Ferrari F10 would only have two seats, right? Some pickups have 3, and you can always put all the crap (and people, depending on the law where you live) you want in the back of the pickup, which I doubt you could do in a Ferrari.

I completely agree with this. Size and quality seem to always have an inverse relationship when it comes to this.
In fact I clearly remember one person telling me I needed to design scripts/RP environment so that it would somehow TEACH the idiot minges how to be real RPers... I think that kind of mentality is why huge scripts got popular. A crutch that became a necessity.

There's no script to teach them, really. There's an implementation, you put an admin on a server and kick the minges until they learn.

Roleplay is doomed in the future!

Ahh... UCRPM Robbis should remake it, I remember camping out in a van on oviscity hacking for monies, Computer shop owner came out and stared at me for a lil bit and went back. It was great.

LOL
I remember UCRPM, that was a good mod
Most servers also restrict EVERYTHING GMod has. Fuck look at crap servers like horrid VentMob. Gives you NOTHING, can't spawn props, no tools not gravgun or physgun. Why RP that way in GMod.
Someone else (I think it might have been Cat or another one of the Meteornet admins) said similar things when this craze of limiting everything started, and it prompted an interesting discussion iirc about what is the point of RPing in gmod and not being able to use any of the sandbox tools (As you could in gmod9, with the exception of some servers with tool trust). You might as well just go RP in HL2DM or something.
Anyway; I think the issue with heavily scripted gamemodes is caused (imo) primarily by the fact that the people who prefer these gamemodes don't enjoy / want to do / know how to do "real" roleplaying, where you live out the life of someone else (Sort of like an never ending book / film where all the participants are the writers, actors and directors), they prefer being handed everything on a plate through a heavily scripted environment that tells them everything to do. When this craze of heavily scripted RP started (With jobs, stats etc), I believe people started calling that sort of RP an RPG, and I think that's partially the problem some people (Mainly those who prefer the heavily scripted sort of RP) want to jump onto a server and do some fun RP and then leave, and if they do ever join again RP something completely different. Whereas other people see RP as more than that, they (as I suggested previously) see RP as a never ending story that (In the case of Melonbrew/Meteornet dunno about other communities) has gone on for years and enjoy the freedom if being able to do anything and everything (within the rules set out by the admins of course) without being limited by a script that wants to force you to eat shit and piss or sleep.
In my opinion the people who play the heavily scripted RP gamemodes need to be shown "serious" unscripted RP, and I bet many of them would make the change.
(Holy wall of text batman)
If anyone does know of any decent serious RP servers that don't rely on having a derma menu to do everything, please PM me the IP or leave it here. I've been wanting some decent RP for a while without decrypting textlish.
Meteornet is quite good, when its up.
Hopefully it should be back up some time in the near future.
I remember inventory was removing a prop and spawning it. :v:
