Honestly, the only way you will actually learn is by understanding what the code does and then rewriting it yourself.

Map is so close to being done. It's a motherlickin' badass stadium. The camera is gonna have two 2D planes, x and y. You can switch between them but there is a limit so you can only switch once every 3 seconds. still keeping the side scroll spirit! Also, it's not a football, it's a hat. And tackling involves crowbars. And pain.

1) Can "hats" be an acronym for something like Fallout 3 has VATS?
2) After the contest is done, is it possible to get a "Hat-Free" open source of the gamemode?

#1 - No. That has nothing to do with "hats".
#2 - Yes. However, since the rules state that the gameplay has to have something to do with hats, if you removed the hat related stuff, you would only have a side scroller. If that's your goal then you are in luck. All gamemodes will need to release their code to enter, but only by the deadline.
Oh! I have an idea, since "hats" cant be an acronym, how about a sidescroller, in a giant hat!

Gamemode Coding Contest shouldn't be a Gamemode's Sub-Forum, it should be a Garrysmod Sub-Forum so more people can take a look and vote/critic stuff.

Unless it was a full team kind of thing for an entire team of modelers/skinner/coders/mappers all together. Then maybe. Then again that would be [i]very[/i] hard to do. Not to mention good guys will team up.
It should stick in gamemodes forum.
Out of curiosity, who is the panel of judges going to be made up of?
And on what scale are the gamemodes going to be scored? And what on what basis? 5 points for fun-ness, 2 for adherence to topic, 3 for coding efficiency, etc?
