Downloading updates should be optional. That way we could avoid the problems.

How about this simple solution everytime you have gmod opened and some source update happens:
NEVER CLOSE GMOD AT ALL... SO YOU CAN STOP BITCHING
How? Making your PC hibernate and minimizing gmod.
Simple as that, always worked!
Downside is that you can't play other source games with gmod opened.
Setting your Garry's Mod to not update automatically won't fix anything. It's not Garry's Mod updating, it's Source.

You can't and even if there was a way it would be still forced, because once you open any source game it updates.
Grrrr... Every-time someone starts their Gmod I launch mine hoping it has been fixed, thus starting a chain reaction.

Hope it gets fixed, I personally appreciate Garry making an announcement that he knows about it.
Though its times like these where I see how unsightly the community can act towards problems. It isn't Garry's fault, but the automatic response to inquiries about problems shouldn't be hostility and preconceived perceptions about what an honest meaning user might be here for.
Valve doesn't cater towards garrysmod. They update and fix their games and garry has to fix any complications with the engine updating. Just be patient, it only takes about a day to fix.

But what of those people that only have GMod? ( Don't ask me why they would only have GMod... )
I think when gmod got its own engine (or what ever) it wont break on tf2 , hl2 or css update and you don't need another source ga,e to play it, only for content.
hl2 DM and TF2 are free source games, and there are other cool source mods , for example Age of chivalry and gmod9 (no wire, haha!)
Valve needs to get off their lazy asses and approve this update.
