Please help! MAJOR GARRY'S MOD ISSUES SCINCE 3/28/11 UPDATE!

Hey, my friend and I both have this exact same problem - Gmod stops responding while loading the menu. We don't get any error messages or crash dumps. We've followed all the advice given in this thread, but nothing is fixing it...
We're both running Win7 x64 (I'm Pro, he's Ultimate) on fairly modern hardware with the latest drivers and updates for everything (and we don't overclock or anything). No other games or apps are having problems. It's worth mentioning that we just downloaded Gmod fresh from Steam, and haven't changed anything (so we don't have any addons, for example). Also, every other Source game we've tried runs fine (HL2, HL2e1, HL2e2, L4D, and AS).

I HAVE TEH FIXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
its our anti-viruses that are blocking it. ever since steamguard released its april first update, antiviruses on certain computers have been blocking hl2.exe related programs from starting. Add gmod and tf2 to ur whitelists/exeptions for ur antivirus and firewall, and it should fix the problem. Worked for me :3
sir
are you high
Ah, very good! This let me run Gmod! My friend was initially confused, since he doesn't run any antivirus, antimalware or firewall software. But I went and whitelisted it with Windows Firewall (despite it being off), and now he can run it, too (what the hell?).
Thanks for sharing the solution, Ether.
I tried enabling it as exception in firewall settings, but my anti-virus is Bitdefender 2011 and thats kinda hard to handle
Not a firewall exeption, a antivirus exeption
go to antivirus/advanced settings/exclusions and add the team fortress/gmod executible
Hmm.. well i have gmod and portal, made them both exclusions but still the same problem .. (but portal works)
Did u add the hl2.exe program inside of steamapps to the exclusions?
Yup .
There may be 3rd party software interfeiring then. Contact steam support.

My problem is i can start gmod but when i start a single player level it stops responding when it is "loading resources". do u think this will fix it? I HAVE TRYED EVERYTHING!!!!
Also if u think this will work how do i exactly get to where i need to make gmod an "exception" on windows 7?
I hope you can help me. please respond.
