You could add "map_background [i][mapname][/i]" to the autoexec.cfg, but it would load Gmod THEN the map.

VTFEdit is not hard. It's the easiest program to understand. All you have to do is load the image and save it as a .VTF file. If you can't figure out how to do this, then why bother doing this service?

Background01 is a file not a folder so you can't save it in there you CAN save it in
(garrysmod/materials/console) As Background01 though
