Friendly Player's Serious RP server, is the only one done right, you can be a gangster and grow plants to sell or othe rshit tis really fun
You know this thread will turn into a flaming thread if not already. Anyway, my view on roleplay is different from a lot of yours. I have ran serveral successful role play servers, all of them are serious and trust me, if you haven't came to it, you shouldn't judge all RP servers just by joining a few, also, he asked for your favorite role play, not your view on roleplay. Mine is HL2RP
Griefing... It's the most fun you can do nowadays.
roleplay is stupid and doesnt belong in gmod, or any game. It is the bane of all multiplayer gaming. It will always have stupid admins, bullshit rules and restrictions that make you wonder why your even playing it because it's a chore to do anything. You want fun roleplay? Play D20 over a steamchat or something.

Please, HL2RP isn't roleplay. It is just cops vs robbers with that one citizen in the middle who actually roleplays, but isn't able to join a side because of the half-assed application cycle.

/facepalm
lol @ people still arguing about rp
just stop, it's up to the server owner to run whatever, no one actually cares about your opinion
I'm starting to warm up to HL2RP, although I'm still a FalloutRP fan. Hopefully when Clockwork comes out I will have the strength to script a FalloutRP schema.

Clockwork is one of the reason RP has declined, most servers just buy clockwork and do nothing to be diffrent so everything becomes stale.

Clockwork = OpenAura = Nexus
They are the same thing.
And the servers who actually DO a lot of work (as in coding), gets drowned by autistic people who thinks "I GONNA STAY ON THIS SERVER AND DONT LIKE IF ITS ANY DIFFERENT CAUSE THATS BAD NO MATTER WHAT" - Even if the other server is obviously better.
Or people getting jealous and DDOSing (cowardly)

No... Not really.
It's more-or-less that the servers which actually do 'lot of work' are just adding a glittery hud which doesn't radically change gameplay, or they don't do anything which actually changes how the gamemode plays out.
I can not recall any gamemode within the last three years which has done anything to radically change how RP is played out. If you are aware of something that I am not... Please enlighten me.
Special Note: If it includes contraband[money printers/drugs] as the primary income, it is automatically deemed Cops Vrs Robbers.

Well. The server i am working on is different. A lot. The whole rp is much closer to the hl2 cannon! Scriptwise!

Unless you're being sarcastic, explain what makes it different.

I kind of agree, roleplay gamemodes tend to all have the same shit in them with a couple of VGUI changes. However, in the last three years we've had Tiramisu which has been revolutionary in its features, such as the in-game headhacking and its brilliant animations system. Sadly these features are overlooked.

Welcome to Facepunch.
RP is boring as fuck to me. Either its a bland deathmatch with shitty gunplay and whining players, or it consists entirely of walking around a map stuffed with filters while donators call you a faggot and push you around.
I'd much rather just kill people, with a gun that handles well. Like in TF2 or some shit
My favorite roleplay is SRH but they are STILL trying to fix things from the gmod 13 update. Well thats how it goes the more features you have the harder they are to fix...

adding a few jobs isn't hard work sorry to burst your bubble
adding a few jobs isn't hard work sorry to burst your bubble
Who said that i "added few jobs"? I am not even using DarkRP but Nexus.
The problem with roleplay is these many autistic people who seems so rigid in their mind.
So far the only in-game rp i've done is hl2rp and darkrp. And I do prefer darkrp over hl2rp but forum Rp does beat them both due to just the pure creativity you can do with it.
edit: it has to be a custom darkrp cause default settings suck.

i also like
imperial community PERP - nice cars, good map, custom interfaces/NPCS/drug growing&making but the people can be shitty to you unless you donate alot 6/10
Modified DarkRP - many many players across several servers - custom everything 7/10
Noobonic Plague - nice Mining system where you mine gems or get them from other sources and combine them into shipments and permanant weapons. they also have a banking system to save items BUT every time someone robs the bank they get items from a random bank account. i really like this server but it has 0 chance to build 5 prop limit for non-donators and they cost money and are destroyable. you can also play as a headcrab which grows and gets higer quality gems from a spawnable entity or a mining foreman which is the same thing except you dont have a bounty on your head. 9/10
Starless BuildRP and Starless Alpha servers.
"Novus Two: Rising Conflict" (Youtube it)
The Novus 3 for gmod 13 is just bad though as it isen't developed by the one who developed on Rising Conflict. (not kuro i talk about but the one who made it into Rising Conflict with all its features, aka me.)
Starless BuildRP and Starless Alpha servers.
I remember that server. I chased two Danish players from Naval Play over to it, and declared war on their little 'gang base' and used wire-explosive cannons to wage siege warfare on them. After about 30 Minutes of endless wire-explosive bombardment the 'gang' surrendered the two people I wanted.
You know what's great about this entire story? I was going after them because one of their guys forgot to save a boat he was working on before leaving, and their little groupies tried attacking me when I went to talk to them.
Y'know, I think I just realized something about why I've almost never had a good time on any "serious RP servers" and had many enjoyable experiences when I just go on a server that's not even running a script intended for roleplay and try to initiate something.
In almost all "serious" servers I've ever seen, there's absolutely no effort to include everyone. If you go on a serious server and you aren't one of the established players with the "in" crowd, you'll quickly find that you have nothing to do but wander around hoping to god something happens. If you even find anybody, it'll probably be a huddled circle of the "in" crowd talking amongst themselves with their backs to you, obviously not wanting to converse with the "new guy."
On the other hand, if I connect to a random TTT server and, oh, say, claim a building somewhere as my "store" then go around collecting weapons, ammo, etc. and offer to trade them for items or props that I deem to be of equal or greater value, then everyone is a "new guy" because there's no established order, and anyone that wants to be included is. You'd be surprised how many times I've done this and been met with success. In the example I just gave, more often than not, people actually do come to trade, and there will usually be at least one or two people who want to become "employees" acting as either scavengers, going around the map collecting items to trade while I tend to the shop, or security in case some one tries to "rob" (or more often actually kill) us. On a few occasions, I've even seen people open shops of their own and become competitors of sorts.
Because there's a time limit and no respawns until the round ends, you can't really set up anything long-lasting, but that's kind of the point. Because everything is so spontaneous and free-form, anyone can join in and everyone gets to have a good time.
The main thing that hinders my ability to enjoy role-play is that all the servers want a nice 10$ donation just to unlock the classes, and some addition 10$ donations to get all of the features of the game. If you are going to charge 40-60$ just to play the game mode, you should point out as soon as you join that you are just testing.
There is nothing fair about being limited to citizen and gangster (not gangster boss mind you, just gangster) and some other minor things like cook (I'll get to that in a minute). If the rules for roleplay for you mean if you hit/talk badly to a cop you are killed, talk negatively you are arrested, and it is impossible to get a permit because 'dud3 saw u w/ le printa s0 y4' when the entire economy depends on these money printers (I'll get to the non cop vs gangsters again later).
Also on the same topic of cop vs gangster, there is such a huge problem of what exactly RDM is. Everyone is going to whine of RDM no matter what, and some will claim "Oh I was roleplaying" (which is code for I had a better weapon so I screamed raid a few times). Then, trying to get a weapon in 90% of the servers I have joined (haven't found any ones without a massive circlejerk yet) is going to require a gun dealer. Which requires a permit.. just the perfect time for the 'in' group to start blackmailing you. (Usually I leave the server right about now). Some servers are less obvious about it, although it is clear that you are being priced extra, and others will say something blatant like "KGV Members get +25$, others get +150$"
Now supposing you get this weapon, and you have these nice printers and nobody is raiding you. Congratulations, you won; go home. 25k and all weapons, but what are you going to do with it? Nobody is going to roleplay with you if there are printers, and if you raid anyone it is pretty much impossible not to feel like a dick. Yay I can kill people with one printer and no weapons? Or I can fight the cops and just DM with the mayor?
But can you do that? Oh let us read the gangster class: follow mobboss rules. Mob boss has no limitations, so they can request all your printers/money/guns. Power corrupts. Now you have officially joined the circlejerk on this server, you may now A: Raid the police, B: Leave the server. There is just nothing else to do but printer farm once you have weapons. (Or get banned by an admin for 'rdm' because you killed a cop arresting you)
Now there are servers that try to avoid that whole fight and make it more like a mmo, such as the post-nuke rp. Problem: No competition. They have set up no reasonable way that you could kill someone without rdm'ing, which means I can easily ignore everyone and gun farm.. which is what everyone is doing anyway. (Seriously, the zombies aren't hard. The only thing that makes those rp's fun is when there are griefers and it is a dm, because at least there is something to do)
Finally the admins have so much selection and confirmation bias it defeats the purpose. Nobody follows the NLR these days, even the admins will break this rule 99% of the time. Sure they see you again, but it doesn't follow the idea of a new life if you are 'suspicious of new comers' whenever you see someone that raided you in a previous life. That isn't a new life.. (This can be fixed by generating a random name after each death. That would be *way* better. Also, while you are at it it is a new life, you should have your money reset)
There is no incentive for shops to work right now in the servers; microwaves should be removed entirely. Sure they are convenient, but the point is to *roleplay*, if a microwave is the equivalent of a cook, what is the point? Same with health stations, they are taking the roleplaying parts of actual people. Time to go print money again and reap all the rewards of the invisible microwaves in spawn

All of what you just said are problems with DarkRP servers, not roleplay in general.
But yes, I agree with you completely. What you pointed out are the fundamental problems with DarkRP servers and players these days, but unfortunately it'd be kinda hard to fix. It's just what the gamemode is known for now, and it's what every server running it has essentially turned into. I'd suggest moving on and finding something else that you find fun. Perhaps try out a more "serious" roleplay server running a different gamemode if you're into that.
Large, well thought out post.
You're absolutely right, and it's the single largest thing I've tried to fix in the servers I've worked with. serious RP is, most of the time, a clusterfuck on the in-crowd. I've thought of ways to fix that, but won't likely have a chance to test it (which is fine).
A problem with the in-crowd way of serious RP is that it gets boring playing with the same people every time you join, which leads to the decline of the server. If a serious RP server were to work with the play of everyone instead, they would last much longer.
