all the results are in the milliseconds the final and highest of which is 117 milliseconds to 64-191-87-134.hostnoc.net (i assume that is where the files are actually at) do you want me to type out the exact results?
Screenshot... Honestly I don't know where anything is hosted, where the gmod server is, or where things are being downloaded from in relation to you.

Don't see much latency... Seems like a problem on your end or the servers end.
Don't see much latency... Seems like a problem on your end or the servers end.
any way to check to be sure that the web host allows for a fast dl setup..? it is a free server from 000webhost.. also can you look at the actual website and be sure it's setup correctly..?
If you can download the files in your web browser, it should work for fast download.
it is a free server from 000webhost..
That's the problem.
well those 2 last posts are a little contradictory. i have seen other posts showing succesful fast dl with this provider. are you speaking from actual experience with this web host or just assuming based off that fact that its free?
Free hosts have always been bad. That's why they're free, they're not 100% perfect and fast every time. You have idiots that don't know shit about anything, and end up causing high server load, crashes, etc... It's free, take what you get. I've been doing web hosting for a living for six years... Just listen to what I'm saying.
the speed has never deviated or differed. it has not been at 50% or 80% it is always the same speed, the speed limit of my server. i believe the slow speed is indicative of the files being downloaded directly from the server. i don't think it's connecting to the website at all. i tested this by uploading all the files necessary needed for the server to the webhost, then set the sv_download to 0 to see if it would force redirect the client to the website and it just came up saying "missing map" and disconnected me. [editline]01:59AM[/editline] is there anyway to narrow the problem down to be sure that it has to do with the webhost? perhaps thats where the bulk of the suspicion lies but is there any chance that there are wrong settings from my end. or perhaps using "slayers dedicated server" to host the server is inadvertently causing a problem?
I've never seen a "direct download" be the cause of slow speed. That should be the reason it's fast, if anything.
I've never seen a "direct download" be the cause of slow speed. [editline]02:02AM[/editline] i believe the slow speed is indicative of the files being downloaded directly from the server. i don't think it's connecting to the web host at all. i tested this by uploading all the files necessary needed for the server to the webhost, then set the sv_download to 0 to see if it would force redirect the client to the website and it just came up saying "missing map" and disconnected me. is there anyway to narrow the problem down to be sure that it has to do with the webhost? perhaps thats where the bulk of the suspicion lies but is there any chance that there are wrong settings from my end. or perhaps using "slayers dedicated server" to host the server is inadvertently causing a problem?
Right, that shouldn't be a problem unless they're having problems.
Right, that shouldn't be a problem unless they're having problems.
ok so me using 000webhost shouldn't be a problem unless 000webhost is having a problem. so you feel that i've done everything correctly on my end?
Unless you're having speed issues elsewhere, it's their problem. Moral of the story, don't use a crappy free web host.
Unless you're having speed issues elsewhere, it's their problem. Moral of the story, don't use a crappy free web host.
ok lets assume for a second that i am incorrect is trusting other posts i've seen. and that webhost is no good. is there anyway that i could narrow down the problem to be sure it was the webhost? because it doesn't seem like the server is redirecting the clients anywhere.. not to a bad web host, not to a good web host. to no web host. how do i know that the server is even making an attempt and i haven't screwed up on my end?
Downloads are downloads... It's not your source server.
Downloads are downloads... It's not your source server.
then shouldn't it say somewhere when someone else joins my server, that it was unable to connect to the fast dl web host.. or that there was some type of error when trying to connect.. it just downloads it right from the game server, which is fine but slow. i just want to know if the server is even trying to redirect people to the web host for fast dl. [editline]02:33AM[/editline]
Downloads are downloads... It's not your source server.
ok, why not prove it? if it's the web host then no one should be able to link to that web host for fast dl right? but if it isn't a problem with the web host then someone who already knew how to properly setup a sv_downloadurl would be able to link to that web host and have it work properly with there steam server.. proving it's something wrong with the setup on my end...
Dude a download is a download. If it's slow, there's a server problem or network problem.
Dude a download is a download. If it's slow, there's a server problem or network problem.
i need to know WHERE the files are downloading from. because i think there downloading from my game server. and if it's my game server, then i might have setup the sv_downloadurl wrong. but if it's not from my server then it's from the web host and then yes i would need a new web host. so how do i know if it's downloading from the web host?????
I dunno where they're coming from. Ask the free host.
I dunno where they're coming from. Ask the free host.
so theres no way for me to tell as either a client to the game server or as a game server host where i'm downloading the maps and extra content for my server from?
Well if you don't know where it's coming from as you say... not really.
Well if you don't know where it's coming from as you say... not really.
well lets say i jump on my friends computer and log onto my game server. how would i find out where the server is directing me, on my friends computer, to get the files for add'l content. then i should know where the request to the server is coming from. and i would just need to see where it was getting those extra files from.. either my game server itself or the web host i've setup for fast dl.
Well you setup the download url apparently.
Well you setup the download url apparently.
AHH, but did i set it up correctly? thats why i want to see if someone who really knows what there doing can setup a fast dl from this web host i'm using, then i'll know for sure if it's a error on my part or a non-usable web host [editline]03:00AM[/editline] like i said i did see a few other threads saying that this web host worked.. maybe not great but definitely faster then the 15kb limit that a game server imposes
...
figured it out, i needed to put qoutes around the web address in the server.cfg file. 000webhost is working fine now.
