Don't use DMZ, click the virtual server tab and forward the port as per this screenshot:

Thank you very much, quick question; should I use admin-admin?
Erm, also, let me quickly do step by step;
I click virtual, Then log in as
Admin
Admin
Then, I click the tab at the top for port forwarding, select add, then it comes up with a list, but mines abit different that yours Catdaemon.
I'll provide a screen shot if necessary, but it basically asks me to use a drop down list of either tcp, udp or tcp/udp
Edit:
Ah, I think I get it, do I select ADD, then UDP on user defined, then 27016 for all fields?
My server is on the server list for about 20 minutes and then vanishes, which causes people not able to come in. Can someone please help.
admin didn't work
EDIT: nevermind I found my password
anyway, I have a new problem now. Seems to be the same as most other people: My server won't appear on the internet list, only Lan and I've screwed around with all the options possible and it still won't work.
What password is for belkin?
Man the linksys routers are gay they keep coming on lan because after you click "Save" it will just be be blank aging argh and it becomes a lan server
I have the same problem as several other people i put in sv_lan 0 (don't know what "heartbeat" does) my game.cfg says sv_lan 1 by default....Still won't show up under internet... so what the heck do i do????
how do you go into your game.cfg file?
In the cfg folder
Ok I've tried everything and I'm a bit fed up... I've posted some pictures to try and help anyone who could help me.
First, I opened up my router configuration page, then the port forwarding page. I entered the numbers (strangely there was no section to choose the protocol) and applied.

I noticed a 'port triggers' page and opened it, entering the same ports for good measure. Apparently, "This page allows you to enable or disable the predefined Application Level Gateway (Port Triggers) triggers. A Port Trigger is needed for certain applications that need one or more ports opened to operate properly. The typical applications that need Port Triggers to operate properly are games, video conferencing, and file transfer (e.g., FTP). Note: You must ensure your firewall policy allows traffic on the application control ports through the firewall for any Port Triggers you configure."

After reading it, I opened up the same port in the firewall.

After I had finished this, I rebooted the modem, disabled Norton and gave it a shot. I typed in "sv_lan 0", "heartbeat", all that jazz, but no luck. Just for good measure I disabled the router's firewall, tried again and once more entered "sv_lan 0". This is where I was greeted by a line of LUA which read:
"sv_lan" = "0"
- Server is a lan server ( no heartbeat, no authentication, no non-class C addresses )
I'm presuming that somewhere hidden in the depths of the magical world of Gary's Mod is a file telling the computer that the server shall be on the LAN, not the internet. This is getting very frustrating, and I hope someone will be able to point me in the right direction.
You guys that are having trouble with your server only appearing on the lan listing, are you behind a router? If so, try setting up an internet connection without a router. Just connect directly from the cable modem. Then
have one of your friends who has the game try to connect to your server. If they can at that point it was your router, if not it might be one of your firewalls. If it wasn't your router, keep it unhooked, and turn off your firewalls. Have your friend try to connect again. If he can connect now, then try turning on the firewalls one at a time to single out the culprit. Finally if none of that works then it's probably just a setting that's messed up in game. Also, this is probably common sense, but be quick about doing the check with your firewalls off. Or you could just keep windows firewall on; it usually doesn't block stuff unless it asks you about it, and you tell it to.
I hope this helps.

I would love to try that, but unless I can convince my dad to either have a cable running through the house or swap the computers (extremely unlikely) it will never happen...
Thank you so much.
ok, i have a D-link router and in the virtual server tab it asks for a 'private ip', wat is it looking for? also, when my friend tries to connect to my server through the internet (of course) he says it says not responding and gives the 192.168...ip in the box as the ip address of the server. So anyone have any ideas about this?
If i set cv_downloadfilter to 0 it also stops me from uploading stuff? Because i don't want that people can use my lua files and other mods in my server.
I just switched from linkys to D-link now what? I logged on to my rouder went to the virtual games and its asking me the same as khatosh
When I go to the Command thing and type ipconfig nothing happens, help please?
I don't think that your own server shows up on the list, just like the fact that you can't see yourself anywhere in gmod.
Plus, When I get into the page itself, it says: Port range conflit with Virtual Server HTTP.
what do I do then?
Ok, i tried all of this but it doesn't seem to work. This is my modem http://www.diamondmm.com/DSL642WLG.php do any of you know any other ways to create a listen server?
Thank you so much!
well I'm lost at one part...
This is on a lynksys router, and I used
Admin
Admin
Any way...
when it shows my defualt Gateway IP under YOUR IP ADDRES then a [] spot I can fit about 3 digits in....
thanks

Type CMD, THEN ipconfig
NOTE TO ALL LINKSYS USERS: current problem on portforwarding.com being unable to find your model of linksys, try going control+f and searching for the model (for me NRF104 or something), it'll come up under a different thingy but when you click on it, it goes to a linkysys page thingy, I know I'm kind of illiterate here, but I hope I helped.

heres my problem:
For a listen server how do I make it so that people that join will download the models I have and they'll be able to see it?
I don't have router, what i should do?
result of when i type ipconfig (in french)

I am having the same problem as many of the other people who have replied to this thread. I have followed your directions relating to the port fowarding by setting both the start and ending port numbers as 27016. Also, after creating a server using the "Create Server" option in the GMod main menu, the server only shows up on my "LAN" servers list and not on the "Internet" list. I have tried typing the sv_lan 0 into the console with no success, but I have no idea what the "heartbeat" command does. I have also followed the router-specific directions from portforward.com for the Half Life 2 Steam application, also with no success. Can somebody please help me with my problem?
What router do you have?
My server doesn't appear on the server list..
I did do what the guide say's.. Any suggestions ??
it don't work it say can't exec serverlistens.cgf
