sv_secure 0
alright cool
Edit - Well this sucks...
the ping for my server is up the ass..
i got cable internet, and the ping for the server was about 175
was quite the gayness.
Still not working for me. Turned off firewall, opened the ports, added sv_lan 1 to game.cfg then typed sv_lan 0 when server starts, typed heartbeat in console, but it still won't show up. So, what am I doing wrong?
you don't have to put in sv_lan 1
you have to put sv_lan 0
that is what i put and it worked

First, look around and see if you have a router. A router is a small, usually blue, box connected to a internet modem. If you have a modem do this:
Go to the start menu and find the run button. When the prompt comes up type 'command' (without the 's), then click OK. Now type ipconfig and hit enter. Several lines of text come up. Look for the line that has 'Default Gateway' and copy what it says next to it into a new Internet Explorer (or, if you want, Fire Fox) window. Once the page loads look for a 'Virtual Servers' or 'Port Forwarding' link. Once the new page loads type 27016 (UDP) then press apply. Now you will need to restart your router by either unplugging it for 60 seconds or finding a small 'Reset' button usually found on the back of the router.
Also, you may need to disable your windows firewall / any other firewalls you have running at this time.

Now that you have your computer set up to handle the listen server, start up Garry's Mod and click on the 'Create Server' button on the front menu. After the game has loaded you may need to type this in the console:
sv_lan 0
Now that you have your listen server set up and online you will need how to control it and it's players. The following are some good commands to remember. Remember, // means a comment.
kick <username>
// Kicks whoever's username you type in

addip <time> <ip>
// This adds the IP address you entered to the ban list for the time you gave in minutes.
// To find the IP address type 'status' in the console to find the user's IP.

status
// Displays all users on your server, they UserID, SteamID, and IP address.

sv_cheats 1/0
// Either turns cheats on or off. Cheats enable ent_fire commandd, noclip, ect.

gm_sv_clientlimit_props <number>
// Changes the number of allowed things. In this case, props.
// Props can be replaced with effects, spirites, ragdolls, ect.

gm_sv_allownoclip 1/0
// Either makes it so noclip is disabled or enabled while cheats are off.

heartbeat
// Gets your server on the server list instantly. It usually takes around 5 minutes.
Admin Scripts
If you are like most people, you can always just use a handy admin script to memorize all these scripts for you. Here are a few scripts that I recommend.
Ulysses Mod - An excellent mod that allows you to do anything from freeze players to stop players spawning props. This is the most powerful admin mod out there due to it's ability to give players a certain level of 'access'.
Hunt's Mod Revamped - A simpler admin-menu to use than ULX, but with much less features. This mod only allows the host (you) to admin your server with just a click of the mouse.
Does this only work on g-mod or does it work on css and hl2 deathmatch
Aaron, that isn't very smart because it's like opening a door to hackers.
I don't believe that Aaron is so special that if he opens ports to make a GMod server that the hackers would attack, Don't be paranoid.
He said, opening ALL PORTS.
Anyways, this doesn't work for me. I'm actually calling my network provider now.
Unless he is a huge company that has valuable information that can be sold for money I don't think hackers will be monitering his internet waiting for the perfect chance to strike and steal all of the "valuable" data. That takes effort and no one is going to do that just to hack a HOME computer.
Isn't the default port 27015?
As you can see i'm new to the forum.
I've got a problem related to listen servers. My listen server stopped working 3 days ago. Reinstalling GMod didn't solve the problem. I tried everything on this thread but I didn't solve anything. What should I do?
not bad, very helpful
I've got a d-link, and I have portforward'ed my router and everything but anyone who tries to connect gets this message: Server is invalid. Help, someone?
how do i make people admins
What if I want 2 servers on my one internet connection? Like a GMod and a Sven_coop server.
Edit:
how do i make people admins
Use ULX and add their steam login.
I have used the tutorial and I still can't seem to get my listen servers to work.
I have set my local PC's IP to static. I use the NetGear WGR614v2 Wireless Cable Router, and set my values for the forwarded port as follows:
http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j152/RotatorSplint/PrblmRouter.jpg
(yep, that's the static IP I set). After these settings were applied, I unpluged the router for a minute, and then plugged it back in.
Upon entering my server, I ckecked to see that sv_lan was set to 0, and put heartbeat into the console.
I didn't see the server in the server list, nor did anyone join (obviously :) ).
Is there anything else I can do?

May be in your router you need to list it as a service
Try changing both start and end ports to 27016. And i think the service type should be UDP.
What do you mean by "listing it as a service"? And how would I do this?
I decided to use 27010 and 27020 so I could cover everything inbetween (I seem to remember the number 27015, not 27016, so I figured I'd play it safe.). Setting it to 27016 does not work, nor does 27015. Nor does setting it to UDP only.
Does your router have a firewall?
Sorry it's taken me so long to reply... my internet has been screwy lately
My router does have a firewall I believe. Not sure how to turn it off though, and I'm tentative about doing so due to hackers, but just so I know, how would I shut it down?
And thanks thus far :)
I've tried setting my router up for a listen server, and I even gave myself a static IP, but ever since I opened up port 27016 I can't join or create any servers in Gmod, even single player. I get the error "Client 0 overflowed on reliable channel". I tried a re-install, and tweaking more setting on my router but all to avail. Please help me.

where do i type this information
Will the number you type in to "port forward" be the same for Gmod 10?
Do we need a static ip to run a listen server?
I am also having the listenserver.cfg problem. Apparently, after the update, the file went missing. Check your console after hosting, and look for "could not execute listenserver.cfg" I believe that is the main problem everyone is having.
LEAD22, I actually seem to remember that my friend gets that error but he's still able to run a server. I get it too but I can't.
It's very strange as he's always been able to and I haven't. Despite trying every suggestion in this thread of course!

I did this but it didn't work, what should I do ??
This is the number I typed in 192.168.1.1
Well, now that I have looked, my server actually shows up on the LAN list, even with sv_lan 0.... that's my problem, people can't join my server because it's LAN.
And for some reason, it will not switch from LAN to a listen server.
EDIT: apparently my gmod 9.4 has decided it wanted to be 9.0 for some odd reason, it says it is gmod 9.0 in the top righthand corner of screen... I think it's time I do a re-install
I have ZyXEL. I can't find the UDP link! ('Virtual Servers' or 'Port Forwarding' link)

Is anyone going to help me
Pretty useless too me.I can play my listen server fine without doing anything.
That might be because you either have a totally different modem or internet connection type, or that a computer expert/administrator already has made you able to connect. If you reinstall everything included the modem, you might experience problems..
Sometimes when a password thing comes up the username is admin and pass is blank. Other times username:nothing pass:admin.
Another possibility might be that the password/username could be admin because another administrator/expert has already set it so, or that it was already been taken care of before you bought it. The password should be something easy, like 0000, 1234, admin, user, client, (unique serial number for product or product founder), 4321 or whatever. You should ask the shopkeepers for standard passwords and usernames if problems experienced.
I unblocked the ports and tried to make my server, but it still wil not appear on the sever list. All my firewalls are off and I did the sv_lan thing. Nothing seems to be working, and I've been trying this for months.
You might have opened the wrong ports? Try opening the UDP, but watch out, it's risky to mess with them.
Actually, sv_cheats can't mess with your computer. It can mess with your server, but it can't mess with your computer. But lua on the other hand...
I wouldn't have said that for sure. Although the standard commands such as God, Buddha and the sv_-commands might be safe, we are dealing with a engine as advanced as the Source-engine. We never know what might lie down in the debths of deep programming of the source engine, and if the hackers are learned commands that execute a specific task on your computer (Such as those who forces clients to download something server-side or makes the processor/windows do something about some files), the sv_cheats command might give them access to a few such commands. However, i doubt they would ever find them out without the source code and sv_cheats looks safe since it mostly disables cheating on servers, not advanced configurations. We can never be sure though, but in the end, i wouldn't have worried about it in a normal situation. But you should disable it if your server gets hacked. Who knows what could be done :S
...fustrate me and now all i get for a create server is a lan or steam id invalid which suchs, plz help my friend has the same rouder and he can do it but i cant. i went into the command prompt and typed in heartbeat sv_lan 0 nothin i even looked at the start up sequence were it sometimes says connection to steam servers succesful or failed to connect to steam servers this rely bothers me any help plz im not going to mess with my router that does not work!!!!!!!!!...
Steam ID Invalid? Failed to connect to steam servers? :O Dude, i don't think this has to do with setting up a listen server, i think this is a more complex problem. If your steam ID is invalid, you might be using a cracked version, and that would of course not work. And if you Fail to connect to steam servers, that doesen't have anything to do with *setting up* a server, so you might want to post this in another thread. :S
This would remove anything stoping hackers from getting at my comp right?
I don't think anything would make you *entirely* sure of avoiding hackers except disconnecting your cable, setting Norton up at full security, enabling firewall at highest level and never open an unknown program. If you're playing a game online, your PC is generally at risk. :S The question is just, how do you avoid *as much as possible*. You should be careful to have Norton turned on, and make norton permit Gmod on its UDP (Be careful, if this message comes often, it might be a hacker trying to connect) and you should turn off your firewall and let Norton Firewall control it. Have auto-protect on, and i'm sure you'd be quite safe. :)
Just out of curiosity has anybody ever got steam to work with a wireless network?
Yes, i'm currently on a wireless Belkin network right now and i'm using Steam often. It works like a charm :)
..I entered heartbeat sv_lan 0, sv_lan 0 heartbeat, almost all the combinations you can imagine..
I think you'll have to write sv_lan 0;heartbeat. The ; separates 2 commands. I use it both in ini/cfg-files and when spawning an NPC with a weapon (e.g npc_create_equipment weapon_ar2;npc_create npc_combine_s) because the equipment must be entered in another command. Quite silly :S
I share the same router as my dad, (He works on the computer for a living) and when I tell him that I'm about to do this, he gets all annoyed and says that it hogs too much bandwidth.
If you have a bandwidth over 1 MB it shouldn't really be a problem. I'm playing almost all the day and my father goes at the internet without problems. The only thing is, our internet-deliverer (sorry dunno the real word) has been making our connection slow many times without connection, so sometimes my dad asks me to turn off Gmod, even though it stays just as slow when i've done it. But i dunno if your modem is below 1 MB. :S
That's always suggested but only by idiots beuase it's on by default
Well, for some reason these "idiots" seem to be right! People don't say that because they're idiots, they say it because that some people, for some reason, seem to NOT have it turned on. Wether they have fucked up the console on their own, or some mod has done it, etc etc doesen't mean anything. Some players need that tip.
Thank you very much, quick question; should I use admin-admin?
Dude, if you're sure noone is gonna mess with it after you've changed the password, i wouldn't have worried. You should also write down the password somewhere just-in-case. Try keeping it elsewhere than on the computer, hackers could use it to configure your router to entirely other purposes, such as making you easier to hack (But that is very unlikely) :P
After I had finished this, I rebooted the modem, disabled Norton and gave it a shot.
Disabled Norton?? Dude, i really wouldn't have done that. That's just waving with a free ticket, saying "Yo h4x0rs! Show me ya g3ar!". Norton is some of the most secure programs to protect you against hackers and has saved me LOTS of times. Believe me, i know because when i see "Norton has detected and blocked an intrusion attempt" on a message in the downer, right corner, i feel kinda lucky. Believe me, you don't wanna disable Norton.
I wish I could do that, but my bro is on his laptop playing WoW all the time...so I geuss i'm just never getting a server online...
If he is playing WoW, it seems ur internet is working perfect, at least for that game. If the game is not using UDP (Which is very unlikely, even the source-engine uses that, and is most standard) then you might have to open the UDP. However, if WoW is working, Gmod not, the problems might lie in the source-engine or Gmod settings. Also, try opening more ports, like 3 - 7. But be careful what you open. And when i mean to open them, i mean do it in Norton. Norton has a default blockage that prevents programs from connecting. You should set it to display a warning when someone is trying to remote access your computer. That way, choose permit on the message (it comes when trying to connect online) and Norton will permit that game to access the internet. Second, try opening some ports, BE CAUTIOS WHAT YOU SET THE SECURITY LEVELS IN BOTH NORTON, FIREWALL AND WINDOWS TO and try connecting again. You might want to DISABLE the Windows Firewall and let Norton take control of it (That suggestion is asked when you install Norton).
but I have no idea what the "heartbeat" command does
huntskikbut has already told that by his first post. It makes your server appear more quickly in the list. If not used, you might have to wait longer for the server to show up.
I use Avast and Windows firewall, any suggestions?
Y
is anyone going to anwser my question please help! ! ! ! !
Okay i just got a linksys and bypassed it so i will walk you throught the steps.
Ok first you hit Applications & Gaming. Then you hit Port Range Forward. Now it will be bars like App:Type The name(ex:gmod9server) Then it will say Start in that box put 27016 and then End:Put 27016 Protocol:Hit the arrow and go down to UDP click it. Now for your IP if you have a static then enter it or your normal ip. I hope this was helpful!
that was. thanks a lot=]
