I'd probably take a look at this, but...Really it'd just be faster to go directly to a server from favorites or something.
I suppose if you're looking for something new this would be nice, though. You got my support.
Yay! I love this idea!
Thanks for the support everyone! I am currently working on the server kiosks.
Anyways, I could really use a modeler. Anyone want to help with that?
I was gonna create "The Arcade" sort of a mix of fretta and the gamemode floor on Gmod Tower.
Does this sound dumb/copycat-like?
I wanna know if I should invest my time in it.
people are using the term gamemode here alot i think myself this is not a gamemode but more of a portal to gamemodes like a 3d multiplayer version of the server browser, jump in with a group of friends hey this servers got space lets go.. kinda thing, if grease makes a good map with different sections such as countrys etc this thing can really go far.
plus grease u never gave me credit for making the master server pic in this thread :O (even tho the browser thingy is kinda non related lol i guess it is pimping up the browser sorta haha)

It's still a gamemode. Regardless of it's purpose, it's still a gamemode. Otherwise, it wouldn't be in the gamemodes forum.
Like someone said, it would be good for new people but people who have been around awhile will hardly use it. And anyways the newer people would have to find the server out of the other couple thousand just like any other server. It would be cool but it's not going to be able to sustain itself at all.
I love this idea.
Make the map reasonably fun to play on for listen servers and the like, though.

Perhaps, but I'm giving it a shot anyways. :buddy:

I redid some of my algorithm and it's a bit more flexible now. It's able to handle a lot more information than it did before. Easier to edit too.
Anyways, my holographic kiosks are gonna be next on my list. I hope to have them working by the end of the day so I can get some pics up.

I'm imagining a 3d2d interface with partial alpha and some sort of overlay or material applied to it to make it look holographic. Sounds cool to me.

Pretty much. I've been having troubles with my user message transfer so I won't have pictures up tonight.
Make it so the server portals allow you to queue up so you join as a slot becomes available. Have your server query the other community's servers to see when a slot is available, etc.
Although I still think it's easier to just add stuff to your favorites or use the history tab, unless you're looking for new gamemodes to play ( lol hurr like gmod has a large selection )
I like this idea, if it was advertised around somewhere new people to GMod would see it (although I don't know where as I don't think a lot of the new people come straight to FP although I might be wrong) then it work really well.
Popular or not, it looks very interesting.

I came to FP before I got Gmod (Got it few days later)

It's got a long ways to go, but you get it. I still need to readjust fonts and get some images on there. Then I'll change the size of the hologram and apply some kind of overlay.
Hey, want a map? I had an idea just like this a few weeks ago. I dug up one of my old test maps, and got to work.
images is some randoms name making them is my game (not making people called images...)
edit: although?...

That looks fabulous. Great work. :)
I've taken a break from kiosks to work on the screens. I think JetBoom is going to help me with the server queries system so I can directly retrieve their data and display them on the kiosks and server screens. Hopefully I can get more help with these kiosks since I'm sure my design will get fucked up somehow. I've gotten a lot done on the kiosks, so if someone wants to help finish them up I'd be fine with that.
I'm going to need a model for them too, so if anyone is interested just PM me.
I'm working on the main screen which will display welcome messages, communities, top-rated servers, maybe ads, and other forms on information. These screens will also need models. Again, PM me for details.
I'm thinking I'll make these randomized screen transitions. So rather than the screen image changing in the blink of an eye, it might go fuzzy for a sec and then change while some screen noise is up. Or maybe the current screen image slides to the side as the new screen image comes in. It would look so cool if done right. That would probably involve some image cropping on the go, but it would be a nice effect. I have so many ideas.
I was also thinking of making some kind of help-desk entity. Something that could give you directions or something. For instance, if you don't know where a certain category of servers are, it could point you in the right direction. Maybe like a little robot that deploys a sprite that only the individual player can see which leads you to where you wanted to go. That way each player can ask these helper-bots and each will get their own help rather than getting mixed up with one another.
Another idea I had was if you wanted to find a specific server portal later, you could set a landmark there. Kinda like an online shopping cart, you see something you like but you want to keep looking without losing what you just found. Perhaps like a glowing orb you can see through walls with the name of the server by it.
As far as maps go, I have a very specific image in my head which I will probably need to draw out since I can't find any similar pictures of my mental image online.
I will be gone this weekend so just post any questions/comments and I'll answer them when I get back.
grease uve done alot of thinking there havent u lol, alot of those sprites being client sided would be great to reduce lag sounds sweet.
ill have those pics done when your back hopefully

Things rendered by the client are clientside. Model collision is serverside, while model rendering is clientside. Materials are clientside, while gamemodes are serverside.
The hell? I was rated dumb the second this was posted?
PC Hardware and Software produced a ratings script to let you automatically rate posts. We need the ratings removed, this shit is annoying.
Are you talking about mapping the kiosks? sure, I'll help..
PM me if you like.
you shuold probably add some kind of system that tells players who want to test new gamemodes what the gamemodes are all about (if someone joins a RP server it could say something like this "In roleplay gamemodes you live a virtual life in a virtual world" etc.
carrot thats probly what he will do on the kiosks, he'l probly have info about each thing
I like this idea, it's a great way to see what games are good, and let's you try new ones without being lost in the server list.
you also might want to add like a hover of the portal sound while your next to it
Psst, I can model. Answer my PM's, greasemonkey D:
the best hes on holidays atm unless he's back now but yeah
I'm back. Sorry I was away longer than anticipated. Weddings, camping, ugh.
Now for question answering.

They will be separate entities placed in the map, so that won't be necessary.

Great idea. I'll make a gamemodes-under-development section.
you also might want to add like a hover of the portal sound while your next to it
Yeah I'll be sure to do that.
Anyways, I'm hoping to get more of this done before my school year starts. I've been sketching some stuff for maps, models, and such.
