Really, no one cares what he is doing. I don't care as long as your crap doesn't interfere with my agenda.

MY NAME IS CONNA l DON'T FUCK ABOUT, CODE DA GAMEMODES IN DA CORNA BRAPPPP
I really don't see the hate because someone is selling a game mode. They are entitled to sell it.
Having said that, I do feel like the DMCA request is too heavy handed. It's not like the people running it for free are going to buy it anyway, so it really serves no point.

I'll enjoy laughing while applying to UCAS to do my degree in Computer Science. Who cares? Probably nobody, since doing a degree isn't a large achievement.

Edinburgh, Heriot Watt, Glasgow, Strathclyde or Aberdeen. You?
I doubt that any of the activities done by Ideal Hosting are legal anyway. I see no published business number while the EU laws require that. It also looks like this person is running the company on either a name of his mother or wife who is an immobilien? Which could only mean one thing, the person is a minor, or the person wants to stay legally dependant of his parents for taxes and such.
I wouldn't worry if I was you, because looking at the way the business is set up, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't ever dare taking this higher up as it could cost them their business.

Cool. Not sure i'd put that on my statement though, lua is a scripting language rather than a programming language, and what youve done is restricted to gmod quite a bit. But then again, im probably wrong, and they'll consider it good.
Do you know C?

I'll enjoy laughing here at UMass getting my degree in Computer Science.

Tiny bit. It's experience in programming methods and so on, so would still look good.
Thank you, and that is a /thread. I've already spoken to VALVe about this and they've told me it is absolutely fine.
The fact that one of the guys from the PR team told you it is fine for you to sell it doesn't make it OK to send DMCA takedown notices to random server owners, or coax server hosters into believing your little gamemode thing is an actual product.
Begin by showing me the trademark registrations for Nexus, Blueprint 2 and so on. Show me exactly WHERE in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act does it say that usage of this gamemode for non profit, personal purposes is not fair use.
You can sell it all you want, but you have absolutely no legal right to control distribution or usage of your gamemode. /thread.
I'll ask the question no one seems to be asking: Why the fuck do people insist on using these bloated, overly-networked, poorly optimised pseudo-roleplaying gamemodes in the first place? They're poor scripts. Just don't use them.
Remember the good old days, when we had scripts that did nothing more than add a basic chat and monetary system to sandbox? When server owners and community leaders concentrated more on their community than on having the newest, shiniest gamemodes? When people developed gamemodes to forward the GMod community, not to make a quick buck?

While it may be fine, I question whether or not you (assuming you are the person who sent the e-mail or are the supposed copyright holder) will actually take this person to court or pursue your threats considering the time and money involved weighed against the actual benefit of doing so. I also wonder if you really have a copyright or are just lying.

Because no one has actually come in and set a standard. Sometimes I think about doing it, but I other things with higher priority get in the way. If someone releases a well written and feature rich RP gamemode, tacoscript and all variants of it would become obsolete as would most DarkRP and other spin-off RP gamemodes (cider, cake, ect.). Providing ease of use is also considered when developing the gamemode.

I think you're getting a little over dramatic.
buying an offshore box just to host servers with all his gamemodes and an anti-kuro website

Want to go even more hardcore. HL2:DM RP.
Is this a valid claim? I thought that Nexus was free, but I haven't really been keeping up with these gamemode e-drama things.
I hate to tell you this, but you might have been scammed by the person who issued the DMCA claim.
The letter looks legit, but that's the only real thing about it. From what I read in the other posts in this thread, the DMCA'd content doesn't match with the "copyright", and the plaintiff doesn't even hold a copyright to such content.
One of the things that erks me about the DMCA is that it potentially allows the plaintiff to steal your identity if they wanted to. The information the defendant must provide if they wish to dispute is more than enough to allow the plaintiff access to your social security number.
My recommendation? File charges if you're willing to fight (he's more than likely using a fake address, so ask the police or an investigator to trace the e-mail back to his IP address. Don't do it yourself as he could be using a proxy and getting through that would be considered hacking), or just follow what he says if you aren't.
EDIT: This was mainly a reply to the first post. Go ahead and continue with your conversation as usual.
EDIT: Sorry about this...

Unfortunately, the DMCA allows for licensing, which is basically selling usage rights. That's why you should always read the license (including the fine print), no matter how long it is. It's also the reason why GNU GPL and Creative Commons pwn the DMCA, but that's another topic for another time.
I'm afraid the DMCA is just not on the end-user's side.

If an investigator is allowed to do it, we're allowed to do it. It's only things restricted for the Police that we couldn't do without a risk.

Is it even legal to release something for free, then a month later say "sorry, it's private now" and threaten legal action against those who are using it?

They can stop hosting the files, but unless the license specifically states it was only free for a month they can't do jack.
Really, they can't do anything. Smile and wave at the DMCA notice and then if the host tries to shut down your server explain the gamemode was free when you got it.
And if the host shuts down your server anyway then you can sue the host.
