NO. Delete the PHX and WIRE packs too because 1. They're outdated the second they get uploaded. 2. SVN is muuuuuch better. 3. They're illegally uploaded anyway.
theres a lot of people out there who don't know how to use svn/their computers can't use svn
Keep popular downloads, suck as the PHX3 packs and wire etc etc, some of the popular ones like Ragmorph or stuff often on the front page, delete stuff that is over 200 says old with less than 25 downloads in the last 50 days.
Dupes, Saves, scripts, etc aren't supposed to be removed because they are "bad". Like Garry said in the sticky, "The site isn't meant to be a collection of the best files, it's meant to be a place to upload stuff you made and want to share." Unfortunately people are to stupid and ignorant understand the "stuff you made" part. Why not bring back the report feature with combo boxes with the appropriate report categories. As long as the mods to their jobs, there should not be a problem. Sure it would be hard at first with the swamp of reports going on, but after awhile (+ banning), even the thick headed users will get it through their heads.
theres a lot of people out there who don't know how to use svn/their computers can't use svn
That is why we have hundreds of threads on the website with the sole purpose of being a tutorial of how to use SVN. Plus all computers can use SVN. It is a simple program that only requires an online connection when you tell it to update.
What about a rating system where if a addon has a low enough score, it's automatically purged from the site? It'll help keep the minges off the addons and we can also have a scoring system that ranks stuff from most popular or great, down to the shittiest of them all.
theres a lot of people out there who don't know how to use svn/their computers can't use svn
That's why Divran is awsome http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=688324 Also It's not like SVN is some sort of Mega CPU sucking, Hard drive demoloshing, RAM opressing beast of a program. All you need is an internet connection. Hell even on my shiity connection of 300 k/b average download speed it works.
Did Garry go through with this or something? I'm getting this from GarrysMod.org
Garry has said him self:
If you don't like it, don't download it and shut the fuck up. The site isn't meant to be a collection of the best files, it's meant to be a place to upload stuff you made and want to share.
What I think we need is a better browsing system, so we can sort search results. You could choose to order it from most to least downloads. Theres others things you could do to make it easier to search or find stuff.
remove rp_downtown_v2 while there at it.
And ban anyone who tries to re-upload it
Frankly, I think this is a bit elitist. There are thousands of downloads on Gmod.org that aren't famous or super popular, but that doesn't mean they're not used or liked. Even if someone uploaded a map that isn't great, maybe because they're new to mapping, they're just trying to contribute to the community. It's not as if it's a personal affront to you if you don't like what's been uploaded, just simply don't download it. Read the sticky, it says that it's just a place to upload stuff for everyone else to benefit from, not a collection of only the best files. The ones that you don't download aren't causing any harm by existing. The only possible inconvenience thay could cause is that they make it harder to find things, but that's why the most popular ones are filtered to the front of the page, so by that theory, they would only cause inconvenience if you were searching for an unpopular download which would prove my point that there are downloads that are unpopular but still wanted.
This. If you search hard enough, you probably will find what you want, it just takes a little patience to get through what could be viewed by most as rubbish.
^Same But i think that they atleast should remove porn, if you want to find it (faggot) click backgrounds
Keep the porn.
theres a lot of people out there who don't know how to use svn/their computers can't use svn
Did you know a site called www.glua.net exists?
Well I have been around Gmod much longer then I have had an account and have seen files get deleted. A while ago I lost my computer and I still can not find all of the adons I had on my original. It bugs me that stuff is deleted. And trust me I am one of those who was around when those 1035 day old stuff was first put up. Also some of those uploads are great sources of Lua codes and other knowledge. They can provide an excellent base for many things. Finally how about a better catalog system. I really do not like having to go through hundreds of mods to find the one I need. In some places they have a way to choose the way in which you arrange the information. It would be great if they were in alfa or by date. That way when you know the name of what you are looking for you can find it much easier.
Del all the SAV. Files and not allow them to be uploaded.
Why delete everything? I think alot of people would get mad because of the work they put into upload ,yes I know there is ALOT OF shit but those people may have put SOME effort in the upload. Plus I find I easy to find the things I want when there is a lot of stuff.
Not too shabby an idea. In principle, it works. Delete everything older than/has less than/is smaller than. There are some ridiculous uploads, such as L4d Drivable Cars, which are in reality just the L4d Car model welded onto the Hl2 buggy. However, it isnt fair for the genuinely good downloads which have faded into obscurity just because the latest "Swep" or "Advance Dupe stuff!" has managed to top the list. In theory, a system could be made to allow us to rate downloads. Well rated downloads should be kept, while lower rated one should be tossed. If a well known download is up there, but is too hard to find to rate it, im sure it can be reuploaded, either by the original creator or someone who has the creators permission to reup. So its a good idea, but alot more needs to be checked if it is to come into practice.
People should be forced to write a proper description for their uploads with minimum. I see way too many "lol" and "dis is my first map lulz" descriptions. Most likely some people would just type more "lolz" in, but I don't see any downside on this. If it worth uploading, it has to have something to be told about, huh?
How about that, but with a sort of whitelist, so if a word such as "lolz" appears in the description, or multiple times in it, then it can't be uploaded.
How about that, but with a sort of whitelist, so if a word such as "lolz" appears in the description, or multiple times in it, then it can't be uploaded.
Yes, but that will lead to multiple different ways of saying it to bypass the system. Lul. Lool Lulz. Loolz. 101 I0I The list would keep going, and they would create new words just to do it. Also, make a minimum number of words for the description, and DO NOT let them upload if the picture isnt of the mod ingame. So many pictures are just of something relating to the mod, like a picture of the Master Chief for a Halo Gmod map.
How about a moderation team that checks before uploads? Makes sure the pictures are at the very least related to GMod, but preferably related to the mod, and that the description, tags, and name for the upload are appropriate, and not full of rubbish such as "lolz".
How about a moderation team that checks before uploads? But everything has to have a catch. I believe we would need at least one checker from each country or timezone. So when Americans are sleeping, people like me in Australia are awake and online. More than one checker for each country/timezone, of course, but you get my drift. Round the clock checking would be very useful. We have had some good brainstorming here. And you forgot 2 fails: http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=73836 Someone thinks spamming props and blood makes a cool background. And: I IMPLORE you not to click this one. I know you will, but im warning you of Furriness first. http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=91692 Whats sad is ones like these actually have downloads. There has to be at least some degree of skill in posing to have a good background. And a Gay Furry Background? Come on Garry, you have to have limits on what goes up on gmod.org. If people want Furry porno backgrounds, let them have them, but on another site. Same goes for Anime porn, or any type of porn.
I agree there is a lot of stupid retarded shit that doesn't work anymore, is worthless etc. But most of these things you want to remove files for are opinions. People have different opinions, a large portion of the gmod community is dumber than a box of rocks and will love the "Drivable L4D Cars". This is a misleading title for the download for what it is but they still do drive. Like garry said it's not meant to be a collection of the best files. But I don't think wiping it is the solution. I well zolofto uploaded it but we worked on it together but anyway I'm talking about evocity_v2d, it has over 300k in downloads now. It is the second most popular file on the entire site now. I am proud of this even though I don't think it's my best work. I don't want it removed because people are mad about some backgrounds and dupes clogging up the site. My only suggestion is a report feature but something that for each report of theft or whatnot it has to be researched before deletion. There are a lot of files that were uploaded after that pop up and everything that says don't upload other peoples work but people still do and the files are never removed. Stuff like this: http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=82046 Vehicles ripped off from other packs and put together. :/ Repeated file that Is mine. Someone reuploaded it. Why? They did not even take their own fucking pictures. http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=90630 Decompiled version of my map I would like removed please. http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=90041 Don't mean to sound like a little bitch but it's quite aggravating that after over 3 years of making content for this game that include a dozen or so map releases, involvement in repairing and improving GMOW after the Hl2ep2 update, and a car and model pack that people still have to try to take my work, either by blatantly stealing it or trying to feed of it's success. It's annoying as shit and makes me wonder why I ever made this stuff in the first place. Oh and I am not trying to sound like an elitist or anything as I know anytime I mention my work I am apparently being one to some people. Just trying to make a point.
remove rp_downtown_v2 while there at it.
Jesus christ why? Really? I know this guy is permad but someone answer me why? It's popular, he made it who cares.
Well, garry has obviously read this thread, so he is most likely not going to do anything. Im indifferent to all of this, and I dont care if it gets wiped or not, but Garrys making it seem like we are being a pest here trying to think of him and save him money. whatever... not my problem.
You're right.....This topic should be closed with a very last sentence: Garry will not wipe it clean, this is not a collection of the best files, just to share. He will not do anything else.
There could be a section of the site for the good files that people want and the rest can go on a other part. Granted that nobody will go on the other part.
Keep it full. Like others have said at this point, there's tons of useless, poor quality shit all over it, but there's a lot of great stuff, albeit old, that probably wouldn't get reuploaded. Just go through it and delete all the shit, or possibly add a "Mark for Deletion" sort of button for administrative review to be weighted with upload time against downloads along with quality and such. Would take forever to go through all of the shit and such a feature would probably be abused, but with administrative review and such, it'd be better than a full wipe, I think.
Well, garry has obviously read this thread, so he is most likely not going to do anything. Yeah, he may have gone "Nah.", but he could also be thinking "Considering the points of this thread I shall see where the thread leads to." We do -not- know what Garry is thinking. Just because he says "It's not a collection of the best files" doesn't mean he isn't thinking about it. This is like finding the cure for aids and people saying that you should not make it public and should not consider it. THIS was uploaded one hour ago. It contains pretty much nothing but text files telling you how to, quote, "get (9999) max ammo". http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=95434
Yeah I saw that and commented. All it is is just telling you a command for the console.
My wish list: 7zip support for uploads/downloads. 7zip tends to be smaller by a fair amount ( so a 108mb file could be 16mb smaller easily ). This saves time both ways ( small files upload and download faster ), as well as reducing bandwidth usage, since the files are smaller. 7zip is free and the source code is available, so a specific build could be made for use on garrysmod.org ( since there aren't any official Mac OS builds ). Automated hidden tags ( uploads containing maps have maps added to the tag, and uploads not containing any maps have map stripped from the tag list ), as well as matching "advanced" search that allows me to search for multiple tags or against tags. So I could in theory search for "zombie" and strip away items containing "save game" or whatever. I used to feel upvote / downvote was a good idea, but comments would make it redundant ( although I think comments are in need of a fixed-size container ). I honestly feel there needs to be some form of content control. Warez-y stuff, re-uploads, etc. all not solved by the message box ( which I just click ok to since I read it once, most people just click ok ). It might really be time for some sort of moderation in the regards of a report file functionality. Of course those are all things I'd like to see, but probably aren't really needed. Deleting everyone's stuff isn't a solution since the people who upload stupid shit aren't going to stop uploading it even after all the good stuff is removed.
I think everything wired or adv. duped should be removed, mainly because every idiot on Gmod.org thinks they need to make thier own shitty weapons shop. It should be wiped, but like Jurttu said, people should have about a month or so with a notice to backup thier files. Then before reuploading, moderators should scan the files and see if thier worth it, just to get all the adv.dupe and wiremod crap filtered. Or there could be an option for reporting "useless" material.
Gmod.org needs a rating system.
Nah, let's not purge anything. A lot of the old files have nostalgia factor, there are some maps that are unique to gmod.org (eg. tropicalwaters) that would go away if there was to be a purge.
