• Personally, I think we should just remove every single thing on GMod.org.

What about if there was a group of people, that would go through every file, download it, test it (Over the period of a month or so) and get rid of all those files that are either a)outdated or b)Not suitable for the website (aka porn). Would that be acceptable?
Going to keep it short and simple. GMod.org is cluttered with thousands upon thousands of shit. I would give a rough estimate of how much good/bad I see; If there are 25,000 files on GMod.org, only 2000 are used. That was irrelevant, probably. But it kind of shows how much good/bad there is nowadays. But back to being simple: Clean the entire GMod.org website, and start fresh. This might cause some very big rage, but I'm sure lots of popular stuff will re-appear. I ask of this, because I see so much useless stuff on GMod.org. I see maps that are not even playable because they have been poorly mapped (I'm not complaining, I'm saying this through the eyes of a good mapper), I see models that have no use other than just lying around, I see LUA that is frowned upon. Personally, I think GMod.org should be wiped clean and started again. If this idea happens to be taken into consideration, might I add a "preserve" list? For those who are known amongst the Facepunch community to upload what was popular stuff once again. Examples of why I am suggesting this motive: Luishi5000 Model Pack http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=18819 Uploaded 961 days ago - Although still popular, it's still VERY outdated. One of the old classics that have been replaced by PHX and other such addons nowadays. Colonizationship http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=16232 Uploaded 989 days ago - Back in the days when dupes like this were praised. But it's now just one of the hundreds upon hundreds of useless dupes that no-one will ever download. Hammys and phx pack http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=18955 Uploaded 960 days ago - No-one will download this. It has some broken shit, and it's become very useless. City 2174 http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=12080 Uploaded 1035 days ago - This is VERY old. One of the oldest. But anyhow, it's self explanatory. A very useless duplicate. Probably broken as hell too. Last but not least our most annoying popup download: Kill Breen http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=71542 Uploaded 273 days ago - Uploaded less than a year ago, and it's one of the tens of tens of Kill Breen "maps" (that's in air quotes for a reason) and dupelicates. No-one will use these. These are just wasting GMod.org bandwidth. Just a few of the stuff that clutters the hell out of GMod.org. I'm sure you all have seen more useless crap than any good thing on GMod.org. There are explosive admin/minge weapons that spam the shit out of everything and crash players, useless car duplicates that can be made in literal seconds, crappy maps that are ancient and were badly made. Mappers, modders, scripters, and modelers should all put their stuff (be it worthy & any good) on the preserve list. It will upload like any normal gmod.org file, only it should show up AFTER the entire download content of gmod.org is gone. So it's like pre-ordering a game. You get it as soon as it's released.
How about the good files from users who abandoned the site, how are we going to get those back?
How about the good files from users who abandoned the site, how are we going to get those back?
Well, how bout we get people to preserve the good files for people who are no longer on the site. (Besides, the people who abandond gmod.org usually took thier stuff with it.)
+1 for adding a rating system to files.
Why are people even complaining about this in the first place. We all know Garry will not remove or purge anything from the website. This is not what we should be complaining about. This is stuff we should be complaining about. Not some's phx dupe or whatever. Warez: EP2 Engine Model http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=41914 EP2 Foliage Models http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=66700 More EP2 Content: http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=87667 There is still much, much more on the site. SVN Content (PHX, sometimes wire, etx): Outdated PHX Pack http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=86080 Another Outdated PHX Pack http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=74788 An even more outdated PHX Pack http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=71166 There are several of these. Crap that doesn't even belong on the website: Farcry Maps: http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=90186 http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=85072 This is just as bad as a pirate downloading/uploading. Something that makes no sense whatsoever: http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=90207 Stolen stuff like what SgtSickness previously posted in the last page. It really does suck when someone decides to upload your work and use the typical:
HEY I UPLOADED THIS OTHER GUYS STUFF CAUSE I COULDN'T FIND IT!! I TAKE NO CREDIT!! AWESOME 100K DOWNLOADS! :D :D :D :D :D

Something that makes no sense whatsoever: http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=90207
Lol, fail. Who wants a notepad file.
I completely agree, But I can see that in the future that creators will be creating flame threads complaining that their "awesome" upload was erased... As long as Garry gives us some news about it before-hand I wouldn't mind because it would give people time to finish up or whatever.
AND a filter would indeed be nice. (maps, SWEPS, tools, advs, etc.) and if admins could delete outdated addons and those, which are not allowed to upload to garrysmod.org.
I suggest wiping all files with less than 5 000 downloads. That would keep the "once popular" downloads along with all the useful stuff and will get rid of stuff like "MY UBER ADV DUPE HOUSE!" and "Terrorist CSS pwnage" stuff and most of the useless saved games (not saying all are useless, but most). Also upon uploading you should select a category from these: Map Dupe Saved game SWEP SNPC Model Pack Spawnlist SENT Background Gamemode Pack STOOL Vehicle Reskin And when searching you have the option to search for a category or remove all files from that category from the search. Say im looking for "plane", if i type it i get lots of shitty ADV dupes, if i remove "dupes" from my search, i get only maps, props and so on (unless someone uploaded a dupe in a wrong category). Also add a rating system, you can filter out submissions with less positive ratings than negative.
Don't, I have tons of replacement models, skins, and effects I need from there, I'm not going on FPS Banan since I can't be arsed with getting WinRAR.
wow seriously? you just want a reason to complain. all the downloads besides kill breen you mentioned are good. garrysmod.org has many more than 2000 good things, as i have (literally) more than that on my own computer. I dont think anyone has the right to say someone elses file sucks unless you think you could make it better. All of the files on garrysmod.org were uploaded by someone who thought that people would like it. sure, kill breen sucks (for me), but a lot of people like it. If you ask me, only Black-Ice's uploads should be wiped. [editline]11:36AM[/editline]
I suggest wiping all files with less than 5 000 downloads. Like lets say sakaries uploaded some awesome thing or the new half-life renessance was just realeased? then it would be deleted. Of course a way around that could be to suspend uploads on the website.
I love the huge huge library garrysmod.org has, maybe some sort of "modern content filter" but don't just nuke all that history.
can i be frank? i think the whole bloody site needs a atomic bomb dropped on it and just start new, out with the old and in with the new! Hope garry atleast does something about this.
Then would be the day copiers would rise...

Also for the week before deletion upload would be suspended. I think that would be fair enough.
Right, I've read this whole thread, and I've come up with some ideas, as well as taken the best (in my opinion) of yours. I don't think it is necessary or wise to blue rinse the whole of garrysmod.org, but I do understand that there is a lot of useless crap within it. If a rating system was implemented that meant that all users who had downloaded the file could vote on whether they liked it or not, then really crap stuff would be downloaded less often, because people could see how bad it was. However, I don't think there should be a number of 'dislikes' when an item is removed. I think it should stay until an admin decides it should go instead of going automatically. That way, people can band together and vote 'dislike' on everything and trash the place. Also, all new items on the site could be sorted into categories (The ones further up this page were perfect), and a category box added to the search bar (With maybe an 'All' option included) would make search more accurate. Including an items category on it's search result and page would be helpful too. Adding a report function to each page would be good, so people can report items that shouldn't be on the site (such as "reuploaded cus i couldn't find original" submissions) I do however agree with Garry when he said about "if you don't like it don't download it". The report function should be for content that isn't relevant or is useless, not stuff people find offencive. Here are some pics I chucked together on Paint.NET to illustrate the ideas (click for larger versions). [IMG_thumb]http://i41.tinypic.com/16i8oj9.png[/IMG_thumb] A redesigned upload page (Includes redesigned search box to include categories) [IMG_thumb]http://i41.tinypic.com/fks56x.png[/IMG_thumb] A redesigned file information page (Including a required games section & Category selector) [IMG_thumb]http://i44.tinypic.com/rhqvyg.png[/IMG_thumb] New search results page (With less tags and new search box. Added category to result. Results sorted into 'Age', 'Downloads' and 'Popularity') [IMG_thumb]http://i42.tinypic.com/f2srkm.png[/IMG_thumb] New file page (With category, required games box, Popularity box with vote system and report button) [IMG_thumb]http://i40.tinypic.com/dmwd42.png[/IMG_thumb] New profile page (User viewing their own profile) [IMG_thumb]http://i43.tinypic.com/5z17xz.png[/IMG_thumb] New profile page (User viewing another users profile) (I'm sorry for the spelling within the pictures... Paint.NET has no spell checker. I already know I spelt category wrong.)
Not bad NOOB, not bad at all. [editline]03:17PM[/editline] I personally think we'd benefit by cleaning that ugly category list at the top, house and kill how the hell are they categories?? the categories need to be straight to the point, stools, maps, models, playermodels, entities, vehicles. we don't need a big list of every different type of download up there, thats what the search bar is for! [editline]03:19PM[/editline]
Also upon uploading you should select a category from these: Map Dupe Saved game SWEP SNPC Model Pack Spawnlist SENT Background Gamemode Pack STOOL Vehicle Reskin
I'm sure thats what upload tags were for, not that they worked....
Yeah, reading over the list again, they aren't too great. I think the tag system is flawed, and actually I think it should go. Categories would mean that people would have to put the file in a defined section.
I think you mean, with tags and categories, there is a contradiction. At least that's what I think you mean.
The tag system is used to describe the item, but often irrelevant and stupid tags get used instead. A category system would mean that items would be sorted into predefined groups, so items are more likely to be placed correctly.
does it really matters?
Well the same goes to the whole thread. Does it really matter that there is loads of crap on garrysmod.org? No not really, but we still want to do something about it.

Personally, I think we should just remove the Dupes. These are useless, and you always get excited when you see the title, and then they turn out to be some piece of crap that some dumbass has posted because "Mai uPl0ad r s0 1337 adn it r c00l". Seriously, go on the .org site and look through the recent uploads. Too many of them are dupes. Crappy sweps are also a problem, but most of them aren't much of an issue. Come to think of it, saved "Missions" are pointless as well. They look like maps (D-Day Landing) and wind up to be gm_construct with a ton of props scattered all around and no clear logic or point to be uploaded. I admit, I do make beach landing scenes with my DOD characters/props, but i realize that most of my stuff is really low quality, and i decide not to upload it.
delete evrything older than 700 days old
Hell yeah or atleast give them a medal, titled ANCIENT DOWNLOAD lol
I wish Garry would use it, but It's up to him. I think everything I set out is possible with out reams of coding, except maybe the category system would be quite a job...
Catagories would be great. The tags system is quite broken anyways. I don't think we should delete all the files, because there are plenty of files out there that only appeal to small groups of people, although there should certainly be more protection and moderation against reuploads.
So you think this belongs on the garrysmod download website? http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=92084
