• Personally, I think we should just remove every single thing on GMod.org.

Well, I read this thread, however I don't completely agree on wiping garrysmod.org squeaky clean. I say we have moderators approve every single file uploaded to garrysmod.org before it is public. Moderators will also have access to delete files such as SVN Dumps, or warez.
I think, After one year of a mod being on the site, It should get delete from the site, And for it to be on the site, You have tor do one of these. 1) Reupload it.
I would love to see it clean but I hope not another incident will arise like people pretending to be others uploading virus like that Pikiman thing back in 09' But other than that vote on wipe I got svn for the important stuff anyways.
Not bad NOOB, not bad at all. [editline]03:17PM[/editline] I personally think we'd benefit by cleaning that ugly category list at the top, house and kill how the hell are they categories?? the categories need to be straight to the point, stools, maps, models, playermodels, entities, vehicles. we don't need a big list of every different type of download up there, thats what the search bar is for! [editline]03:19PM[/editline] I'm sure thats what upload tags were for, not that they worked....
Yes, but people would just put "MAP STOOL SWEPS PHX" and other crap thats within the most searched in their tags. By being forced to pick ONE, most people would upload to right category, of course their will be people intentionally uploading in the wrong category, thats where the rating system comes in. As always people will sometimes intentionally rate down, but the fact that they have to download it first and have a rating cap per day will mean that that strategy would not cause big harm to anyone but the people who upload into wrong category or upload shitty buggy broken files.
I agree. The site need's a major over haul. Skins need to be put in skins only category, models in models and maps in maps. sweps in sweps etc etc. It's a cluster fuck right now.
So you think this belongs on the garrysmod download website? http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=92084
I understand where you are coming from, it shouldn't really be there. Then again, it's not really doing any harm is it?
although there should certainly be more protection and moderation against reuploads.
Unfortunately there is no one to moderate the site. Anyone can upload anything these days and get away with it. Hell I bet anyone could upload 5 PHX packs, 56 Dupes, 13 saves, 6 backgrounds and 46 re-uploads/SVN in the same day and not even get caught. What I don't understand is why are there even rules to the website. No one is following them. There are uploads without pictures, there are SVN uploads, there are uploads of other people's work. Its a complete mess. The site does need moderation to enforce the rules.
Ok personally keep 1 of every mod (apart from stolen mods). Any repeats or reuploads or pirated should be removed Lushi's pack is good i like it ^^ Any infected mods with virus's ,malware, adware, trojans should be removed Garry could delete the *OUTDATED* mods with *OUTDATED* on I personally say in my opinion keep everything thats on this garrysmod.org. Files that need to be erased:the Virus bugged files, the*OUTDATED* tagged files
It is okay for me if Garry and his team cleaned the gmod.org site, however I also find it wrong to upload SVN files. At least I hope SilverSpirit comes back so he can reupload the things he hexed etc.. Also hope sakarias might reupload his things too
Remove, also keep the verify account as stupid as it seems, uploads by 'real' GMod owners only? That should filter LOT of useless shit from not being uploaded :) And even I know how stupid the verify account thing is. But, keeping it clean :)
I think the account verifying will stay anyway. What made you think that was going to be removed :geno:
I personally think the verify account thing is a very good idea. It cuts off pirates and is a very minor inconvenience to paying customers. The only people who may have a complaint is Gmod 9 users, but frankly what's the harm in spending £5.99 ($10) on a newer, regularly updated version of the game?
What's the point of wiping all of it? There's a search bar.
I don't know if this is possible but it would be good if they could have like a zip scanner that checks if the file type is a .bsp ( map ) so then if its wrongly taged or categorised it will get removed or corrected. Cause i mean garry added a rather cool function to the site for user verification so why can't he do this?

Secondly a .bsp scanner wouldn't scan a large chunk of the non map uploads to the site. A better investment would be a virus scanner.

How would it scan to see if its not a 2 second map?
Size maybe? Or check the description for a Facepunch thread or something.
I think the account verifying will stay anyway. What made you think that was going to be removed :geno:
If you even answered to me, not sure. But what I meant with it that it could be somehow improved.
We are all pretty much in agreement. Gmod.org needs a clean up. The rating system is a good idea, why it wasnt on there when it started, i dont know. It seems that it would be a necessary thing for any upload site.
One thing i think would be incredibly useful would be a form of "Fame System" where the people like Sakarias or Holmesss and such would get "Points" making it easier for them to post. New users would have to go though a system a bit like TSA security (open the file, whats in it, what kind of file is it, etc...) and if they get a high amount of downloads or continually produce quality downloads, they can skip the "Security" process and have a submission system similar to the one we have now.
if it gets wiped clean then how long will it take to get the good stuff (WEEKS)
Actually the current system displays everything in the .zip file on the files page. If you click 'Show Contents' under the description link, then it's all displayed in the yellow box below.
I agree on this. There are too much things, unneeded things, outdated things etc. And I also think Mod approval would be nice, but will take a long time.
Execute order 66.

A very useless duplicate. Probably broken as hell too.
I think this was one of the first files I have ever downloaded from gmod.org years ago Nostalgia...
Going to keep it short and simple. GMod.org is cluttered with thousands upon thousands of shit. I would give a rough estimate of how much good/bad I see; If there are 25,000 files on GMod.org, only 2000 are used. That was irrelevant, probably. But it kind of shows how much good/bad there is nowadays. But back to being simple: Clean the entire GMod.org website, and start fresh. This might cause some very big rage, but I'm sure lots of popular stuff will re-appear. I ask of this, because I see so much useless stuff on GMod.org. I see maps that are not even playable because they have been poorly mapped (I'm not complaining, I'm saying this through the eyes of a good mapper), I see models that have no use other than just lying around, I see LUA that is frowned upon. Personally, I think GMod.org should be wiped clean and started again. If this idea happens to be taken into consideration, might I add a "preserve" list? For those who are known amongst the Facepunch community to upload what was popular stuff once again. Examples of why I am suggesting this motive: Luishi5000 Model Pack http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=18819 Uploaded 961 days ago - Although still popular, it's still VERY outdated. One of the old classics that have been replaced by PHX and other such addons nowadays. Colonizationship http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=16232 Uploaded 989 days ago - Back in the days when dupes like this were praised. But it's now just one of the hundreds upon hundreds of useless dupes that no-one will ever download. Hammys and phx pack http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=18955 Uploaded 960 days ago - No-one will download this. It has some broken shit, and it's become very useless. City 2174 http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=12080 Uploaded 1035 days ago - This is VERY old. One of the oldest. But anyhow, it's self explanatory. A very useless duplicate. Probably broken as hell too. Last but not least our most annoying popup download: Kill Breen http://www.garrysmod.org/downloads/?a=view&id=71542 Uploaded 273 days ago - Uploaded less than a year ago, and it's one of the tens of tens of Kill Breen "maps" (that's in air quotes for a reason) and dupelicates. No-one will use these. These are just wasting GMod.org bandwidth. Just a few of the stuff that clutters the hell out of GMod.org. I'm sure you all have seen more useless crap than any good thing on GMod.org. There are explosive admin/minge weapons that spam the shit out of everything and crash players, useless car duplicates that can be made in literal seconds, crappy maps that are ancient and were badly made. Mappers, modders, scripters, and modelers should all put their stuff (be it worthy & any good) on the preserve list. It will upload like any normal gmod.org file, only it should show up AFTER the entire download content of gmod.org is gone. So it's like pre-ordering a game. You get it as soon as it's released.
I totally agree, if we wipe gmod.org clean the fact that people have to verify their accounts will elimate threats of viruses and other bugs that my be in old files too.
Execute order 66.
It will be done, my lord.
Even though there is so much shit on Gmod that needs to be deleted, there are also so many nice things. It would be hard to keep track of what to re-upload. We may end up losing some cool downloads.
Even though there is so much shit on Gmod that needs to be deleted, there are also so many nice things. It would be hard to keep track of what to re-upload. We may end up losing some cool downloads.
But if they are "nice" things, surely that means that the creators can re-upload it. because if people think it is "nice" they probbably will have kept spares. I think too many freeloaders and hackers etc... used it to spread viruses and bad content, wiping the slate clean is just what garrysmod.org needs.
What garry should do is simple: Garry should stablish a date, lets use June 15 2010. Two months for people to verify their accounts on gmod.org After this date, ALL files of unverified users should be removed, the rest should be kept. if the uploader own gmod it doesn't matter if the file is just a dam save, he owns gmod anyways... That's what I think... "The site isn't meant to be a collection of the best files, it's meant to be a place to upload stuff you made and want to share." - Garry
