I'm in Europe too but I've often rented servers from the USA. I almost never receive noticeable lag. You could always try pinging 23.29.120.229 if you are unsure since it's one of the servers at elpis.

Some big youtube people are doing TTT videos so people are pouring in. And I feel like traffic in gmod is down in general from being broken, which might be how you somehow rocketed up to the top.
