• MOST stupid reason you got banned from a GMod server?

Is it bad if I ban dumbasses for disrespecting any other play that is not admin? I mean, they can't do anything but sit there getting cussed at. [editline]30th October 2012[/editline] Automerge fuck :C
Clientside mute doesn't seem to exist anymore (At least I can't find it) and people can easily pass admin mod mute by spamming the mic button. Makes it so it's like they're not even muted. The guy was being disrespectful to everyone, not just me, and people were begging me to ban him. I don't ban for admin disrespect. I ban for people disrespect, regardless of rank.
http://wiki.garrysmod.com/page/Hooks/Base/PlayerCanHearPlayersVoice Problem solved in terms of voice mute. Even if they're being a dick to everyone, it's better to just mute because at the day they're being insensitive, and it all comes down to your own personal feelings. Mute, if they then proceed to perform dumb behaviour (eg Deathmatching in TTT) then you take action.

[editline]30th October 2012[/editline] Automerge fuck :C
Sorry bout the merge. Anyways that's pretty much what I'm saying, it's a general rule of no asshatting/flaming other users, admin or not. (Because what, you expect for admins to be exempted from being protected from this rule?) You've got 3 warnings to stop or you're out. Pretty much I treat it like a forum. If someone's flaming you, does a mod just tell you to block them and ignore him? No, they ban the douche for flaming. Same for me. Do I just tell you to mute them and ignore them? No, I ban them for flaming. Besides usually if you mute them, they get even madder and start spamming/prop pushing/whatever. I'd rather avoid the trouble of recovering from mass spam lag or a server crash or dealing with prop pushers.

In GMod you have various tools and methods to prevent griefing and other abuse and it's down to you to implement them. It's like these RP servers with over 80 rules which are completely unenforceable because they actually allow for these situations to exist. The tools are there, available and easily accessible, it's down to you to properly enforce it.

Because I know if I punish them without banning them, they're just going to find ways to cause trouble to get revenge or convince me/another admin to unmute him so he'll stop. Really I just don't want to babysit an angry baby with a mouth a sailor would cry from. I have a whole very populated server to keep an eye on so I can't afford to focus on one thing. The server I administrate is your average sandbox with very simple rules. Common sense. If you wouldn't do it in real life, don't do it here. No spamming or using malicious exploits. No prop pushing or fucking with other people's contraptions. No crappy public dupes, or E2 vision blockers/screamers/etc. No asshatting/flaming other users. If they can't follow such simple rules, within 3, very clear, very noticeable warnings, then they are not worth keeping around. I only give out permabans to those who have purposefully crashed the server. Week bans are for severe rule breaking. Day bans are normal rule breaking.

Everything can easily be prevented/stopped, but somehow people feel the need to push unneeded rules.
I agree that warnings are a good way to approach it, but some people can be frankly good players with a potty mouth. Now whilst you may not personally ban unless they're purposely doing dumb stuff there are many other people out there that will happily ban for the slightest thing. I administrate an entire community and I generally agree with what you've listed, however ban someone for a dumb reason and you risk forever losing that player. It's not the first time I've seen a player return all "sorry, I was terrible and I desire to be part of the community, but yknow I'm permabanned and all that". Match the punishment with the crime and don't treat everything the same otherwise you're going to end up with a very poor, elitist community that scoffs at anything other than what is the accepted norm. Hell I would recommend for a sandbox server is that you run a rank system which works with moderators promoting good builders unlocking further limits. I run (well, ran, still updating thanks to GM13) a build server which has very little downtime because I make it troublesome for people to grief, and those that do get a blacklist from that server.

"Why does this matter?" What do you mean? People (usually...) don't drop their pants and shit in public screaming like a banshee. So don't shit on your mic and scream like a banshee in game. Bad example but that's really all I can think of off the top of my head. "All of this can be prevented." How? Some of the exploits are within the source engine, like physics crashes using breakable props. Afaik there's no way to make certain tools unusable on certain props, and we're not just going to restrict every tool that can do that from guests, on a sandbox building server. Doing that would make it virtually impossible to build, and people can always spawn dupes that do it for them. Spamming however, yes, that can be stopped with Falco's Prop Protection, but the owner has no plans of switching from Simple Prop Protection. FPP has fucked with some people spawning large contraptions, mistakenly ghosting them as spam prevention. "Block certain E2 Commands like range-finding/target-finding" Many good intentions and really cool E2s rely on range finding and target finding. Taking that away would make a lot of people upset and stop playing on the server. "People need to grow a pair and stop acting so teary eyed over people being mean to them." No one gets upset over being talked to meanly, really people just find it ridiculously annoying more then anything else. Like "wow, stop being so mad and swearing all the time" They have a pair, some have several, but a lot of people just don't feel like listening to an angry person ranting and swearing constantly. And I already stated my feelings on muting. Bottom line is, all your suggestions are very restrictive to a sandbox building server. We have tried many of these things before, and we have found people rather be confined by rules, and not be confined by not being able to use certain tools or do certain things. People who get banned for a day/week however rarely return, but there have been a few that return with an apology. There is a rank system in fact. We promote good builders and well-behaved players. Time is also a thing, 20 hours on the server and you are auto promoted to regular. If you can last 20 hours, you're good to go for the long run. We also try to deter troublesome people from doing their nasty thing with a special addon the owner made just for the server. It's a little quiz thing. Just basic questions on basic Garry's Mod knowledge. If you fail, you get nothing but the ability to fly around with a grav gun. No spawning props, no tools, nothing. But you can rejoin and retake the test, or have an admin requiz you. There's a max attempt amount however, you can try up to 5 times (I think) before you have to wait a while before you can try again. This usually turns away people who join just to crash the server. But not all the time.
[editline]30th October 2012[/editline]
I'm not going to challenge you to improve the system because as you've mentioned you don't really have any control over that. I also agree in regards to people rarely using forums which is why I'm keen to minimize any punishments to the "crime" committed because at the end of the day, players are what make or break servers in terms of popularity. Everyone has their own way of going about it and if the current system that you have works without a hitch then it's all good. I think it could be done another way, but that's simply my opinion.
We have a lot of players on a daily basis and it still gets hectic. Trust me... In summer and on the weekends the server gets full pretty fast.
RDM in a deathmatch server
By that logic you would have to ban me as soon as I join your server. I do not make it immediately clear: I don't have the avatar, I don't have the name, I don't play pony music over the microphone and I don't talk about it unless it's mentioned. However, it's not a secret that I'm a brony. So two questions for you: 1. Would you ban me? 2. Why would you (not) ban me?
1. I would not ban you. I should've made this more clear. You will get kicked/banned if you have either a Pony Spray or a Pony Avatar/Name. Every single "brony" who joins the server just joins to grief it or talk about it over the mic/spam MLP music. People come to the server to escape that culture and I don't blame them. The brony culture can be obnoxious to some and I strive to create an environment for people to come and play without being exposed to little girl cartoons. I've been called ignorant and racist and how I'm taking away people's rights, however it's a server that I run purely off of donations so if nobody wants that type of server then it will obviously disappear... 2. I wouldn't ban you because I answered it in #1.
rip pony boy
Very well done!

well I was banned for a spray
I've been banned from quite a few servers because admins don't like my name.

If the player is a decent player, let them stay. If not, at least try to point out the error of their ways :v:
I think banning for admin disrespect is one of the stupidest things to date in the gmod community. How you handle admins is really important in a community's success. It can determine a lot about how your community is portrayed and how interactions are handled inside. It can make a player love or hate a community and can cause social conflict if not handled right. Here's how I see the systems usually go: When servers treat admins like special players, it does have some upsides in certain gamemodes, but can break others completely. When an admin is a status symbol, someone who sticks out from the crowd as a man of power, it helps portray that the admin has power and judgement, so acting like a dick towards people when he's around is bad. It can make a love-hate relationship between players. The admin is seen as superior to the playerbase, giving him respect. But it can break gameplay completely in certain Gamemodes. Take for example, any gamemode that requires RP. TTT, DarkRP, Perp, Tiramisu etc. The admin can stand out as a meta cop, disengaging players from their business to be on their best behavior as not to be punished. This can be seen in many RP servers, where admins become more than moderation staff. They become a part of the gameplay, turning cops vs. robbers into players vs. admin as everyone tries to get each other banned by the admin. The admin can also get his powers involved into roleplay. When servers treat admins as regular players, who are just there to help out it usually goes much better. When admin isn't seen as a status, but more of a responsibility and a job the players who are admins do stick out from the crowd still, but integrate better with the playerbase and often see things from their eyes. These admins usually take time to go through things and see administration of the server as more of a side job to the gameplay. This integrates better into RP based gamemodes. Admins are seen as fellow players, instead of powerful enforcers. They dont wind up integrating as much into gameplay, keeping it focused on it's main goal instead of metagoals. But both of these systems can be completely assfucked sideways by a goat by one thing: Pay 4 admin. The kind of server that sells admin as a rank usually doesn't have a formal community. The community is usually the owners and a few root admins as a tightly knit group, while the rest of the players(the ones who donated or not) are not seen as players, but potential customers.
We've had people join with MLP avatars and it turns out that many of them are wearing it simply to be part of a fad and because they're so young they don't actually understand half of what it's about. But that's because they are total bros and think its funny. Honestly nobody cares if you're a brony there including me. However if you're a total minge and act like a little kid then you'll get banned. In that video on my server it wasn't just because he had a pony spray but he had been prop killing for quite some time.
so i tried playing hl2rp for the first time yesterday. got jailed for investigating a crime scene with some guy and when i got out he refused to talk to me and got the cops who pointed a gun at me so i ran. turns out he was an admin and dragged me away, saying i have to use /me runs rather than actually running. later got banned for walking away from a cop while he was telling me to face the wall, i didnt even know he was talking to me
I've been banned simply for running. The "Play to Lose" crap they have on most of those servers are in place for the server owners have the ability to push around anyone that joins the server. Its not me being banned but it's a pretty funny story I run .Nig TTT and one day someone added me on steam because the TTT name was sn obvious reference to the n word and should be changed. I told them that I dont care and that it's not bothering anyone but himself. He proceeded to site the constitution about how this is hate speech and warned he'd have garry ban my server. I ended up removing and blocking him but he was pretty interesting. He ended up getting banned because he told one of my admins he's an obama supporter and he should kill himself for that and then continued ranting about how obama is forcing gays on us. It was interesting because he either has a voice changer or he is a very weird 24 year old. lol

i got banned from a serious rp server for "fuckin racist". i was a black citizen and i ran up to the mayor and said "yo honkey". thats not racism, that is rp [sub]and slightly racism[/sub]

Russian TTT Server. I got a shot from one and I decided to kill defence myself. A friend of admin was it. I shoot back and he died. Kick (or ban. Can't remember now) reason, RDM. lolol

Happen yesterday. Banned for not chatting & ignoring the admin who was pretty much telling me to get a mic and speak while I was just riding a roller coaster thing
I pissed off the admin he started dancing and banned me.
-snip- they apologised
