I'm working on a map derived from Tazmilly Forest, and so far I've come to the same conclusion I always do when I try to map: Hammer is hard. Or, rather, "I have no idea what I'm doing even though, technically speaking, I know exactly what I'm doing."
I don't know if this joke has been made before but. I love playing chimera, it's not that difficult. I don't get a full victory all the time but I do get them every 5 or so tries. I just play really aggressively, charging the pig spawn at the word go and eliminating pigs as fast as possible. Also I strafe oddly, never running straight at a pig when others are around and instead strafing at 45 degrees toward him, because it looks very strange and makes it hard to strafe around, and complicates things for pigs trying to attack from behind. Also, be aware of how incredibly vulnerable pigs are after they've sprinted. What I thought was, you weren't really supposed to win when you're chimera. There's no benefit to winning and no penalty for losing, it's just a chance to munch some pigs and have fun.
Yeah, compared to the pigs ranking system playing as the chimera...lacks something. Sometimes its like...Oh yay I ranked up blue piggy :D...oh im chimera :/ no benefit to winning or losing :( not even a score system.
I've been playing this gamemode since it's release, and I have to say, it's really awesome. The models are great, and the actual gameplay is good. It's also quite addictive, though some times ninjas are a bit discouraging. However, it's not yet perfect. Here some problems I noticed when playing, as well as some possible ways to address them: 1. There are no consequences to winning or losing when playing as the Chimera. Because of this, there is essentially no motivation for players to play a good UC, other than just for fun or to screw other players who have been promoted. This may have been intentional, but sometimes the UC just won't be trying his hardest to play, and may sometimes end with the UC just offering himself to promotion-seeking Pigmasks. One way to address this would be to tie the player's rank to the UC as well as the Pigs. If the UC dies, maybe that player could be demoted one rank (as opposed to all the way, especially seeing that the UC is outnumbered and therefore at a slight disadvantage). This should keep players from giving up when they realize they've been selected for UC. 2. This may be just me, but when I finally got the cape, there just didn't seem to be much of a reason for the player to actually come after the UC; instead, I usually just tried to stay away from it so I could keep the cape. Of course, I guess this situation might fit the rank's personality, but it would seem to detract from the game a bit. This could be changed by setting a limit to the number of Colonels at one time. If a Major is promoted to a Colonel while another Colonel is present, the previous Colonel would be demoted back to Major. However, this idea could also breed unnecessary competition between the Pigs, and some might consider it unfair, so it might not be the perfect solution. Also, while I agree that ninja-pigs are often quite annoying, it's usually the only way that a lone pig can take out a good UC, and it is also useful in taking out a few campers. Without the ability to ninja, the last surviving pigmask is essentially screwed after his final companion is killed; he might as well just suicide, or even let the timer run out. Maybe instead of removing ninjas entirely, find some way to reduce its effectiveness a bit. Those are all my comments. Again, this gamemode is already really great, but I think with a little bit of improvement, it can be almost perfect. @ Chimera Labs map, the design is great! The atmosphere is nice and creepy. However, there are some areas that are so dark that players can be almost undetectable when hiding there, like behind the curtains in the movie theater. @Shady Oaks map, also a really nice map. This map also has a place where players can all but disappear in the darkness (a corner in the vault room), but it's rather small. Also, I was able to jump on top of the hatch with the tree and pumpkin over the "hidden" stairs. @Happy Happy map, hi Hawt Koffee! It's a good map overall, but seems a bit plain. Also, it might be kind of odd to see the UC climbing up the ladders... Anyway, sorry for the tl;dr, but I thought I should get it all out in one go. Also, Aska, good luck on your competition entry!
I installed this gamemode on my dedicated server but the thing is, I need to re-download the gamemode when I join it even though I have gamemode on my PC. :/ Does anyone know a way to stop this? EDIT: I figured out my problem. I didn't have Chimera Hunt installed correctly.
As far as the chimera winning/losing, how about this- The goal for the chimera is to chomp enough pigmasks to start the end-of-round timer, and from there to survive until it ends. From there, it can either run the clock out and escape or go for the extra points. well after playing this gamemode for about 3 days now i've gotten the drive to make a map ch_porkystower here i come
Winning as a Chimera should give you a message saying "You had a good experience."
So you gain exp everytime you win?
Maybe doing good as chimera should weight your chances at getting picked again I like playing the UC :v:
The maps are from TF2, with the exception of DrStalin's shadyoaks and a bunch of other WIP maps. However, even those use a lot of TF2 textures and models, so you basically need it to play this gamemode at all.
:( Damn I wanted to play this gamemode so bad... I would try playing it anyway but I doubt there are many servers up with non-tf2 maps.
When will jokerice add more maps already, Moep gaming has them all yet everyone keeps playing on jokerice just cause it's more widely known, even though it only has harvest_event
What if the chimera gained some benefit from chomping pigs, like 5 free seconds of sprint for every pig chomped? It could stack and be added to a backup reserve of sprint that gets used when your normal sprint runs out, like it's getting energy from eating pigmasks. It would make a good uc much more fearsome. Another way to do it would be to give the uc 1 second more of rechargeable sprint for every pigmask eaten. OR, you could get really creative and say for every ensign eaten you get an extra second of rechargeable sprint, for every captain eaten you get an extra 30% range on your roar, for every major eaten you get an extra 15% movement speed, and for every colonel eaten you get a random special ability, things like... -Really Scary Face: making eye contact with a pigmask (both players see each other) reduces the pigmask's running speed by 30% -Really Big Teeth: Doubles the range of your chomp -Really Loud Roar: All pigmasks in range of your roar are scared, whether or not they see you, and their panic run speed is reduced by 20% -Really Strong Legs: Doubles the recharge rate of sprint -Really Strong Wings: Uses sprint energy. Holding jump allows you to keep rising upward until your sprint runs out. -Really Messy Eater: Any pigmasks that witness you chomping an ally will be thrown into panic (like roar). -Really Soft Feet: The UC makes no walking or running noise. To make it fair for the pigmasks there would have to be some benefit to ranking up so that killing more valuable pigmasks is more difficult. Maybe they get an extra 10% movement speed for each rank or something like that. Having said that and having had fun typing it, I actually favor a simpler mechanic like the first suggestion. I think over-complicating the game would take away some of its charm.
Aska, I don't know much about Lua, but would it be possible for you to add a map entity with an output that fires when the timer starts? I want to make it so that bombs drop and set the forest on fire once the countdown begins.
If you released this as fretta I'd download it.

I do believe that is how it works.

You should rank down one rank if you don't kill the chimera for 3 rounds.
You should rank down one rank if you don't kill the chimera for 3 rounds.
Does the soldier lose his medals for not fighting in wars?
Does the soldier lose his medals for not fighting in wars?
No, but soldiers lose ranks when they run from battles like wimpy chickens, especially when they have a ruthless overlord as the supreme leader. It still doesn't quite seem like a fair addition though. Maybe there could be added incentive for the UC to come after promoted pigs?
the only server i like to play on is vgu
Does the soldier lose his medals for not fighting in wars?
This is Megawar we're talking about, damn it! We don't have time for not fighting! [editline]08:00PM[/editline] Killing a pigmask should add to your sprint meter and take some time off your roar regen. Higher rank = more added/removed.
No, but soldiers lose ranks when they run from battles like wimpy chickens, especially when they have a ruthless overlord as the supreme leader.
This would be a nice addition, but it might be hard to determine the difference between wimping out, and just looking for the UC in the wrong place, or not getting to it first.
just a thought, but maybe you could add a spectate feature where you don't loose your rank. It'd be helpful if you had to run and do something real quick, and you didn't want to start over as an ensign
How about when there's about over 6 or 7 players or however much can rush a the UC, when the Chimera kills all enemies and wins the game, it gets a teammate, much weaker and there to prevent rushing. It is optional whther or not to kill the mini-chimera/whatever to win the game. Maybe if you want to stick to the story make this teammate one of the other biological experiments you see in the game.

best gamemode ever
For some reason, my HUD doesn't work and it displays the HL2 HUD, my crosshair is the default crosshair, and I can't see the Ultimate Chimera when he's being controlled by a player. I can see his ragdoll, though. All I see is its shadow, even when I'm the one controlling it. As a test, I cleaned GMod and installed only this gamemode, then the maps released here in this thread. There's no difference. The same effects happen no matter what. :frown:
Awesome gamemode, finally got around to playing it.
does anyone know how to spawn the UC models in sandbox? if you can spawn them, i wish there was a spawnlist for the models.
