[QUOTE=GreyIOutcast;18050548]Retro themed. Revisit those old classics, thinking of things such as: Mario (Although JetBoom already got there), Legend of Zelda (None of those projects seem to be going well), Galaga, you get the idea, I'm sure.

I concur fully. This is a great theme.
Co-op :D

Plus, the idea of an actual 2D gamemode has never been visited. I've always been curious if you can use derma or things such as the surface library to create an actual game, entirely 2D.
To be honest, that was part of what I was going to do if I got around to doing the Gamemode Coding Contest this time around.
Puzzle
Yay were going retro-them!!!
Someone make G-man!
You play a fat G-man and Headcrab ghosts try to eat you..

I like this idea. :v:
Strider Tetris? :v:
Retro theme all the way! There is so much that can be done with that. :v:
What would be the time span for Retro? Obviously, it starts from the early ages, around pong, tetris, and etc but what would be the end time?
Health/medicine, or am I blind? Actually, an RTS/tiled base Theme Hospital would be fun.

New contest will be up soon.
Rail shooter/House of the dead type gamemode.
Cooking
Two of my favourite ideas so far are RTS and Space.
However for the sake of variation... I suggest the theme...
Suicide.
It may sound too specific, but there's ALOTS of games where the objective is in some way suicide, or selftorture or things like that... and killing and generally torturing yourself is a thing I really enjoy in games...
I mean, anyone who ever played Oblivon has to have at least at one point jumped off Dive rock just because of how fun it is to fall to your death :3
Hell the game doesn't even have to be especifically about suicide, it can be a game where suicide and pain is just a major element, like "Skate" :3
Although that would probably classify it more as a twist than a theme...
Insurgency
Snowboarding.

We already had RTS. Stop suggesting it.
Simulation.
Imagine Roller Coaster Tycoon, Zoo Tycoon, Sim Tower, Sim City, or just Sims.
Someone started making a Sims gamemode, but it never got far in.

Never >:O
RTS was a great idea, but none of the gamemodes ended up working in the end.

I think contestants could have used an extra week or so. It was a really nice idea.
Racing might be fun, you can go a few different ways with it. It could be a racer of one of the vanilla vehicles, a flying/3D race (eg through a tunnel) or a quirky one like melon racer. You could have it based on driving skill or have it strewn with pickups and speed boosts. You could have scenery obstacles and hazards. You could have one where you're driving a truck and you're racing towards a target, but you've got a box in the truck that you can't let fall on the ground.

No, the problem is that RTS games require so much knowledge of how SNPCs function that most coders were incapable of making something remotely playable. Especially me.
You don't need SNPCs to make nice AI. My turret in Build and Destroy was a normal sent, as was the AI in Tower Defense. Not saying they are nice AI, they are rather simplistic, but it's easily possible.
What about a... computer theme? Go about the internet catching Lua "viruses" and then get onto Facepunch and throw boxes at people.

I would even go so far as to say SNPCs would be a poor choice for AI in a traditional RTS, unless perhaps there were very few AI units. If I was to make an RTS, I'd code the unit AI from scratch, not make them (serverside) entities at all, and simulate/sync/visualise them as I did the citizens and cars in my UFO gamemode.
Latencies have a tendency to get atrocious fast with lots of entities moving at once, so an entity for each unit in an average RTS game would likely be unplayably laggy even if the SNPCs worked half-decently (which from my experience they don't without heavy hacking that mostly does away with the benefits of using them anyway).
Of course, during the last RTS contest there were some very intriguing entries that weren't traditional real-time strategy at all, which was great. But SNPCs would choke any attempt at a more standard game if used.

Yes, I used the clientside entity technique in Population (see Gamemodes forum) for the AI and synced data using usermessages. It works well, but there's no engine physics or collision which is the downside.
I vote religion for the theme.
my ideas:
driving (NOT racing, as if on an actual street)
school
torture
artillery
defend the fort
football
boat building
dogfight
unarmed combat
close combat
raid the building
burglary
logging
snow
television
hunting
archery
socialization
assassination
mining
carpentry
politics
the US legal system
