ok hi hello please join the steam group and come into the group chat if you want to talk ideas. thanks.
I'll get right on that with that steamgroup link I have here... But seriously, talking on the steamgroup will only further limit the people in the conversation and increase the risk of drifting dangerously close to circlejerk territory. Also the thread is dead because people don't have any reason to post. Putting specific things up to discussion (like my gun idea which I continue to grow more fond of), setting, rules list, currency, in game laws, etc would help revive the thread.

I'll quote what I said in the previous page:
Before you move forward with actually starting a server, you really ought to do more planning. Besides the whole development side of forming a script that caters to the needs of the server and the players, you need to put more consideration in how involved the Civil Protection faction will be, what limitations and freedoms will be given to the citizens, whether or not a Civil Administrator or a council of such will exist, how you intend to put in Xen related incidents and creatures, and several other important elements that help make up the server's atmosphere and society. When considering how varied the opinions are on the details of a Combine-occupied city, it's probably best you guys at least come to an agreement on most things before you attempt anything past the planning stage.
I know I'm alone in most of my views of strong player autonomy and a loose administrating team, but I'm more than able to compromise and see other perspectives. Either way, I'm willing to lurk this thread and offer the occasional idea or opposing view, as well as argue for why something shouldn't be the way it's being planned. I'm less likely to do so in the Steam Group, evident by how I haven't joined it.

actual document https://docs.google.com/document/d/11rm2JhTne4BBo8wxw9QPcRIZNzGIp9M2D7vZB2L4tec/edit?pli=1
Don't see why I'm getting disagrees, it was the document at the time I left :v:
How exactly do you expect to have commerce without tokens or credits? Also that sorta throws any idea of corruption for CPs out the window.
only things used to get guns/vehicles or suits can be considered valuable in an economy, the ration tickets thing is a awful idea because it would hold value on an in character level but on an out of character level it won't hold any value at all. [editline]28th March 2014[/editline] also out of curiosity what script will this be using?
You must understand that if there is no out of character value to something, people won't find it worth having. I'm sure you can say things like 'script items are not needed for roleplay', but in actuality, they are very much so needed for roleplay. Why? Because the majority of players will not be entertained by the IC side of things alone. In an ideal community with all ideal players, you could say script items are not needed for rp, but in reality they will remain needed and will need value that transcends both IC and OOC. Also, why does the map look like Gotham City? I thought this was hl2rp, not metroslop begins.

Except for the point where the one pic of the map ruins the combine art style
Except for the point where the one pic of the map ruins the combine art style
Thanks for the constructive criticism guys, I am very honored to be spending hours on content for such grateful people.
Thanks for the constructive criticism guys, I am very honored to be spending hours on content for such grateful people.
I like it. :( Honestly, who gives a fuck if your map looks different? Hell, if anything, we need more of your kind of style. also, can someone set the ability to add comments to the google docs please?

Thus, they have economic value for trade.
Except for the point where the one pic of the map ruins the combine art style
And what picture is that? I agree with you about the 'ration tickets' though, I was afk when someone decided it and I'm extremely against the idea. Food rations have no value without a hunger system, and we agreed hunger systems are awful, so the whole thing falls apart there. And please, nobody say "a good roleplayer will roleplay their own hunger!" Also, I left before there was an agreement on adding the 'happy drug' that costs a lot of money, what did that come to? We agreed to return to said topic another time after that incident.
currency any ideas??
currency any ideas??
The reason why currency (as in tokens and credits) is a system is because it's the easiest concept for people to grasp and instill value in. Any person coming into the server is going to know that tokens or credits will have some value for buying stuff, and since usually tokens and dollars are (supposed to be) somewhere in the ballpark of relative value it's easy to grasp what any amount of money means. Tokens or Credits (I'm fond of credits because I don't like feeling like I'm in an arcade machine) should be the currency system unless you have a REALLY good idea and way to implement said idea, otherwise you're just going to confuse people. Even worse would be to implement the meal ticket system, a system that would either A) Be functionally identical to money under the best circumstances or B) be functionally worthless as said meal tickets would only be redeemable via the combine and therefor subject to their whims, resulting in ammassing of any amount as suspicions activity.
No posts in 5 days. Here's some more progress on the map; This is the plaza, currently. The apartments are finished with 18 rooms in total, and there are some useful storefronts (thanks Rowtree) on the first floor of the brick building. On the right you can see a bit of the Nexus bridge, which was made by Master of Stars so he probably has a better picture. This is an early screenshot, more lights and other things have been added. In the future it'll be completely defensible with force fields on both ends turning on at the press of a button. Bathroom is to the side. Not huge or detailed, but it works. Industrial area is going to be behind it and blend slowly into the ghetto, but we haven't gotten around to fixing the physical layout, so it's just empty space for now. The map is going down a hill, starting from the nexus down to the slums, to add an element of verticality and interesting design. The Nexus is at the top watching over everyone, metaphorically and literally. From people who've spent a lot of time analyzing HL2RP maps - namely, what's wrong with them so we can avoid the same mistakes.
Make sure to add tons of furniture to the buildings. Make it so props and toolguns are not necessary.
Make sure to add tons of furniture to the buildings. Filling all of the 18 rooms with them would be pretty laggy. It also stops people from using and decorating their apartment the way they want. Static props aren't a solution either, since it restricts citizens even more so.
also the combine tower in the center of the plaza does not fit at all.
This. Of note is that in HL2 the combine never built their own shit except for the Citadel which they teleported in. They just added onto existing buildings.
Just so the bridge doesn't get the complaint, the explanation for that is that the original was destroyed in the war. If you hop into the canal you can see the remains.
not really, also the combine tower in the center of the plaza does not fit at all.
It's a placeholder, like pretty much everything except what I took a close-up picture of. Just wanted to see how it would look.
Make sure to add tons of furniture to the buildings. Make it so props and toolguns are not necessary.
I understand where you're coming from but I have to vehemently disagree on this point. Interior decorating is one of the better ways to consume time on an RP server, and it's much more fun to have a customized space to RP in instead of one that's just the same every time. It's a way to brand a place your own, and one of the base things that makes Bar RP fun.
You might want to note, on most HL2:RP servers you need to apply for a flag or special rank to be able to use P/T/E (Props, Toolguns and Entities).

You know I always wondered if it was possible to have the ability to switch out textures with a body-grouped wallpaper. Like... Each room has a wall that start out with a plain white wallpaper, but thanks to a lua code snippet, you can have multiple wallpapers, or even upload your own.
