Though on DarkRP people talk in their own voice 99.9% of the time so calling it even role play by the literal definition is a stretch. At least in single player games you don't have the ability to alter what your character is saying. Your character is the character set by the developers. But by definition on GMOD, MUDS, RP MMO Servers, etc, and what role play is when claiming to be a role play server. You need character development, interaction that creates dialogue, and staying "in character" instead of acting as yourself. And no DarkRP server has a overarching storyline besides claiming its "RLRP". Elitism is subjective. I wouldn't say I'm elitist just because of the fact; I don't want to keep people out of role play, I'm happy to help anyone learn to role play. I want them to learn how much fun real, cohesive role play can be, people being stuck at the DarkRP level are really missing out on a lot of fun.

Your last statement is very close minded to me, you seem to only be thinking about full on, pure RP where you have to make a storyline, just because you didn't create a story doesn't make it less of an RP, as long as you talk in character , even if it is just talking how you feel your class would talk, and behave accordingly, I would call it RP. When there is no story or even lacking a basic one, the players have nothing to develop their characters off of. And sure my definition is what I believe to be role play on GMOD, and I think anyone above the DarkRP phase would agree with me. I was at the DarkRP phase right when DarkRP was released. I loved it but I luckily managed to get out of it and get to another "level" of role play which I got a lot more game play out of among other things. And I would agree if they were to act as their class and act it out and keep in character, then sure it would be very basic role play, but I would argue that they are depriving them self of much better game play if to play on a server with more enforced sets of role play rules. But I do regularly go out and try all kinds of role play servers to keep my perspective right. I don't resign myself to just one community anymore as I did in the past and I have yet to see any DarkRP server or a similar type script, where people act out their classes, create dialogue, and use actions to act out their character. And that to me is just the basic level of role play. I guess the best comparison I can make is this. When you play on a DarkRP server to role play, your playing a game/movie on a TV or monitor with no sound, grainy un-sharpened picture, messed up colors, with a controller or keyboard that is missing buttons or keys. Your not getting the whole experience if you were to play with sound, an HD picture, and a proper controller. or Your playing an FPS such as CSS where the game play is setup to shoot and Deathmatch but your being forced to role play. And better yet the server claims to be a "100TICK TEAM DEATHMATCH DELUXE SERVER". And since you haven't played much on a real Deathmatch server, you think that this is all there is to Deathmatch and when you do join the rare proper DM server, you get owned because you never learned to play DM correctly or get the practice you need because everyone is forcing you to role play instead of DM. So you leave the server calling everyone on it elitist nerds and go back to the safety net and get trapped there. And on top of it every server is named similar and forces the same thing on you either through a custom script or by comparison to what everyone else is doing on there. So you get trapped into this cycle and deprive yourself of fun DM game play on a game designed for it. And sure you get better at role play but you never get better at DM, and then you buy into the stereotypes and cliched sayings of similar people to you about the people that play on these "Serious DM" servers, so that you can justify to yourself why your not as good at DM as the people that play on these servers.

DarkRP isn't bad. I'll agree with any DarkRP supporter here. It's the community at which the gamemode is being played on. You don't have to password a server to RP. You need to establish order. Without a community willing to back it up, you'll have anarchy. Thus, if you find a good server, or jump into one with a bunch of your buddies and change the entire course of the server, you'll be RPing in no time.

I used to RP back in 8.3 and liked it, but I stopped. When I got gmod 10 I got back into RP and have only played DarkRP. It's fun but I'd like to be exposed to more types of RP gmod 10 has to offer, don't know where to look though.

Because if your going on a role play server to do something other than that then why are you playing on one in the first place?

I'm one of the people who can't put much into making a character as I can't think in the way required. I can create a basic character, give him a personality, and thats it. I can't come up with a epic and believable backstory, I just give him a name, decide how he will act and be done with it. Most of the [I]real[/I] RP communities frown upon this as they tend to think you are going to be a shit Roleplayer just because you don't have a real story for your character. It's not my fault my mind doesn't work like yours, so don't call me shit just because I can't make it.

DarkRP is not even RP. It's MingeBags testing their MingeBag skills.

Nobody has the automatic right to a working version of DarkRP because nobody paid for it. If you still play it and complain: Unlucky. You should be thankful you have it at all.

You develop your character just by playing said character whenever you feel like it. It's good to have some sort of direction though when developing a new character. And if you want to do certain things your going to have justify it through the development of your character, aka killing another players character. And I don't think any community can think your a shit role player until they actually see you role play.
