I found out about it from Machinima, this was after the fact I already had The Orange Box for some time.
2005, some show on TechTV (The Screensavers, maybe?) did a contest for Garry's Mod scene poses. I then looked it up and joined the forums.
07 A Friend brought it over to my house, Was I amazed what you could do with 10$
Seen it featured on G4 along time ago. Back when G4 was about video games.
Just surfing the steam store back when it was listed as a mod and it was on version 9. I played that shit through my last year of elementary and all through middle school. Along with my first year of high school.
In 2006 when looking at half life 2 videos, eventually bought it on steam. Doesn't have the same feel to it any more though.

I had played HL2 and i was amazed by the physics engine, so i just googled hl2 physics mod :P
My friend told me it was the greatest game ever, and I got it. A week later he was back to playing Counter-Strike, and I just kept playing. I was finding more and more features of the game that I liked and I ended up playing it until now.
I saw it in the steam store the day it came out and i was like: WANNNTTT.

Too bad it never gets updated anymore.
was youtubing videos of the flying spaghetti monster back in 2006
I discovered it after watching youtube videos, and from constant bragging from friends saying it was "the best game ever".
I was on funnyjunk.com and I saw a funny picture made with CSS models. I asked in the comments "What game is this" and people said Gmod. I looked it up on youtube and saw DJy1991's "Idiots of Garrysmod" machinima. So at first I didn't really know what steam was so I pirated the game without using steam, and it wasn't as fun as I thought it would be so I did not play if for a while. A couple months later I decided to download the real verison off of steam, and It is now the best game I have ever played. :D
One day I woke up and I smelled a strange smell. I went downstairs and discovered that it smelled like awesome.
Then I went on the computer and found that my brother had downloaded Gmod 10.
And then I was like
:gizz:
All my friends chatting on 'bout it on Battlefield 2 Sandbox,
Ironicly I already had Steam but I never saw GMOD on there.
I discovered both Steam and Garry's Mod through this guy.
So my brother was showing me Idiots of Garrys Mod on Youtube and I kinda liked it. I watched all 3 and for a month or two to come I had no idea that Garrys Mod was a Mod for HL2(One of my favorite games) so I was reading a comment and someone said "This game is so great, check my account for tutorial" something like that and I found out about the game.
Few months later after playing GMod 9 I bought GMod 10 and it changed my life.
Watched a bunch of videos of some guy fucking around in it
thought it could be hilarious
still is
youtube videos, probably looking up mario stuff and it lead me to idiots of garrys mod.
I discovered it on Youtube. And I have a question in reguard to purchasing it. I'm told I need to own a Source Engine game to get it. But what if I don't want a source engine game? Can I still get it?
Youtube / DasBoSchitt. a few months later, bought the game - instantly hooked.
Here's my autobiography for ya:
Found out about it on HL2:DM servers, which I got for free from nVidia.
At the same time I also wanted to make puzzle maps. I downloaded the original goldensrc valve hammer and that didn't work, so I tried a tutorial some russian counter strike forum posted on how to get Hammer to work and wouldn't ya know I accidentally pirated Hammer.
With it, several downloads started up on steam and that included Garry's Mod. I was curious so when everything was all downloaded, I ran up Garry's Mod and was presented with a Plymouth of build, spacebuild, and zombie servers.
I got hooked and decided to buy the game, along with everything Source to expand it. (I was an accidental pirate, not a poor one.)
I really really suggest a demo of Garry's Mod 10 to be released with Lua stripped, or at least make a download of Garry's Mod 9 openly available.
Was an active member on a gaming community. They got a GMOD server and the Admins told me to try out this "Garry's Mod". I tried it and got instantly hooked on. Bought some more source games in order to run some famous addons. Too bad that server died some time back.
I first heard of GMOD waaay back when. Half Life 2 had just come out and it was an amazing game... shortly after, can't remember how long after to be honest a friend and I heard about this mod that let you play with stuff in the game. We downloaded it and played it for a while and had a blast.
We were some of the first to get into Gmod. We lived through the days of no animations and even when all thrusters could be controlled by anyone lol.
Interesting side note. During the time when it was Kleiner models with no animation and he was a scarecrow, Roleplay games were in progress.
So roleplay in Gmod has existed for a looong time.
Garrys Mod V5 Baby.

I used to play HL2DM all the time but then Gmod started getting more popular, and a Chinese friend of mine got it. He kept annoying me to get it so I did
The first time I heard about it was the Gnukes, I think.
