• RP Terms Which Confuse You.

Basically what I'm saying, is RP is about 4 hours of arguing over what happened, among 20 minutes of actual, REAL RP gameplay.
My solutions for RP, which I've seen working outside of GMod. 1) Limit combat. Don't keep the strict FPS formula on, it isn't really necessary to have people in RP to die and respawn, a simple "defeat" mechanism could be used instead, so when your health drops to 0 you're simply knocked out. You don't lose anything, you just have to RP being severely injured, and of course, you're at mercy of those who hurt you. 2) Don't be afraid to add gameplay to RP. The problem with DarkRP is that it attempts to actually add gameplay to RP, only that sadly, the implementation isn't complete. Even the more serious tabletop and real life RP systems have some sort of gameplay included on it. It's what keeps us from being just a bunch of tools running about pretending they're someone they're not. 3) Scripters, less graphic interfaces, more problem solving. Animations, customization, flexibility. Most RP scripts are simply not flexible and feature full enough to actually cover the demands of the mostly freeform chaos that is RP. The script can ONLY hinder RP, almost never improve it, so don't get in the way, let people RP. 4) Channels. Most RP scripts should have this. EVERYTHING that is OOC should be sent to a different channel than IC text, so if either is bothering your RP, you can simply stop receiving messages from either channel, and continue playing as usual. Garry's Mod has a simply overly rudimentary chat system, that really does not benefit RP in any way; therefore, scripters should aim at expanding this barebones chat thing that comes bundled in, in order to make it fitting for the needs of RPers. 5) Protip: If someone is begging/demanding/asking you for admin on your RP server, they probably don't deserve it. For Christ sake's, think, choose your administrators from their ability to administrate.
The last one brings me up another topic... How much I hate the fading door tool. Don't get me wrong... It's a great tool. but when people are slightly intelligent they can actually just make a huge defense system, and be completley safe until a money printer explosion.
I remember making a huge maze of fading doors that could allow us to shoot into the people going into our HQ. The fading doors would open up enough room for us to see their feet, but due to barricades, they could not see us. So we shot at their feet when they gone into the one way door.
4. Drugs are pretty much pointless with the exception of weed which magically gives you 50 extra HP. Other than that, why would you pay to die?
Durgsmod shouldn't really be considered a part of DarkRP. I hate it too, but mostly because the drug effects and addiction should be roleplayed, not done for you.
I was thinking about life and shit at work today and somehow RP got in there and I figured something out. The reason RLRP is so fucked over right now is because the majority of the garrysmod community is under aged adolescents who most likely don't have a job, have little responsibilities, and don't have to pay their god damn bills. This results in them being unexperienced in the real world and not understanding how things run out there. They are also probably a little immature to run a group or company without screwing it over. These inexperiences result in not knowing how to efficiently do things, when and when not to do something, and above all, what to do when shit hits the fan. So maybe there are a few out there who do have this experience. Those know what it's like to have to sacrifice their time in order to continue life, worry-free. (ie. going to work for 8 hours on the weekend both days to pay for insurance) So really, what can we do. Any suggestions? TL;DR: The gmod community is full of kids who are inexperienced with the real life with no responsibilities, sacrifices, and budget. This results in failure to know how to RLRP properly.
Im still looking for a SERIOUS RP server with good admins and moderators that keep the rp serious. If only we had a Facepunch RP server... I have once played in a server where everybody actually played serious. And i tell you, it was awesome. I loved the mayor&terrorist hostage situation. Everyone was playing like pro. We actually fucked up when they released the mayor, and we was like "Hey that wouldnt happen really, lets start over", so we did. Shit was so gold. I agree that NLR is hard, or almost impossible to obey, since if someone breaks in my home, kills me and steals my stuff, i sometimes just cant stop myself from going in there and stop him. Though i do not report my death to anyone. [editline]3rd April 2011[/editline] Also, some more ideas: Dying would result in 10 minute respawn timer. Now in darkrp, every criminal rather gets killed than goes to jail, because in jail you need to wait few minutes. Some kind of limit to killing. Its not like people kill each other all the time in normal life. In darkRP, there is no moment where you dont hear gunshots. For servers, more administration. RP requires administration. The use of ban must be great.
For servers, more administration. RP requires administration. The use of ban must be great.
GMod RP is kinda like war of the servers. We ban them but they just keep on coming.
There used to be one, or at least plans for one, back when there was a subforum for roleplay gamemodes.
I really miss the Roleplay Subforum... [editline]4th April 2011[/editline]
GMod RP is kinda like war of the servers. We ban them but they just keep on coming.
Organize Mod Police, arm them with kick batons, arm admins with thirty minute ban batons. Make a perma-hang system, and hang bad players for acts of idiocy.
NLR Every server has a different take on it, but no server has a clue what it is. If I get robbed and killed by a thief, I should be able to report it to the police without getting banned for "breaking NLR". The idea of NLR is to keep players away from the situations that killed them, not to ensure a clean getaway by the criminal[s]. People forget that these terms and customs derived from MMOs, not FPSs, so you need to stop being lazy and develop your own set of rules and meaning. Guess not.
No. Your character died. Unless the authorities are using a medium, dead people aren't saying shit to anyone about who killed them. That has nothing to do with NLR, it's just realism. See, this is why GMod RP is shit on most servers - people respawn and think "WELP! Time to whine that I died!" without even considering that they are IN CHARACTER. They died IN CHARACTER.

I wish there could be an experimental serious DarkRP server, where they enforced serious RP rules. That would be fun.

From what I have heard, it either never got off ground or it never succeeded.
ERP :smug:
How about we do a different type of expermint? Make a money printer which doesn't print money out into another entity but shows like the UKRP printers. Instead of allowing the player to get the money though it puts a message on the players screen saying, "Why do you want this?" and the player has to type a message. Then they get the money... Organize all the comments, and then find a way to make a more player-active system which requires the player to actually do stuff with other players too get money.
GMOD Roleplay seems to be following the same problems that TSRP (The Specialist's RP) had. There's too many servers sending the wrong message, compromising phrases like "strict", "serious", and even "roleplay." The Specialist RP was great when it was very limited to only 2 or 3 servers. The plugins were not released publicly yet, so if players wanted to roleplay they had to follow the rules these roleplay servers had. It funneled all the roleplayers into one large community, economy, and code of conduct. It was known as the more 'golden age' of TSRP, and then it went downhill quickly when everyone began to spam servers out because the RP plugins were released. Roleplay rules began to fade out, because the newbie server owners didn't know how to roleplay themselves, and it snowballed into just cops & robbers mostly. For new players looking to learn about RP, what happens? The likely chance is they join one the 200+ DarkRP servers, and are led to believe because of a server's name that DarkRP is "serious" or "strict" roleplay. Now everyone's idea of "serious roleplay" differs, but I think it is obvious that DarkRP is hardly serious. It may be fun, and that's what a game is all about-- having fun, but it's not really true roleplay. Money printers? Seriously? Money has so little do with roleplay sometimes that I can't even fathom why someone would even make a code for something as stupid as a money printer. No offense to whoever made DarkRP, but making it so easy to create that even a 10 year old can have their own RP server sort of drastically lowered standards for RP in GMOD, and made it harder to manage a real serious RP server. tl;dr version - RP servers should be more strict and avoid DarkRP.
In my opinion only HL2RP has ended up being the most serious gamemode of them all. While there are also HL2RP servers who does give the completely wrong message.
In my opinion only HL2RP has ended up being the most serious gamemode of them all. While there are also HL2RP servers who does give the completely wrong message.
I'm contemplating making a comic to disprove that so hard... HL2 RP in a nutshell... Passive RP, Passive RP, RP With Friend, Passive RP, Passive RP, Get Detained For Breathing, Get Shit Beaten Out Of You, Pain RP, Pain RP, Rape RP, Pain RP, Pain RP, Mental RP, Get Out Of Detainment, Suck Admin's Dick Too Become Resistance, Go Too Canals, Swear Revenge on The Combine For Rapeing You, Passive RP, Passive RP, Passive RP, Get Weapon, Passive RP, Spot Combine, Get Auths, Roleplaying Loading Gun, Combine is already gone, Passive RP, Combine Comes Back, Passive RP, S2M the Combine, Get S2K because their in a zone which allows S2K, and your in a zone which allows S2M. FIN. Thats HL2RP in a nutshell sadly.
Oh yeah, I'm all too familiar with the S2M rule. I was on the Ashlander server or whatever it's called, I had a glock (the bullets fly out of it like wet noodles being propelled by jet engines) and we got into a small shootout with some raiders, I fired around one and a bullet managed to fly out of my area of fire and brained one of the raiders. An admin later got pissed at me "NO KILLING!" Later that day, my group and I got into another fire fight, with our arch enemies. We had wanted to kill these guys for a long time now, and they started to shoot at us with their M4a1s while we returned fire with nothing but our glocks and after I had been shot in the kneecap I decided to shoot back, killing one of them. I was then banned for breaking the S2M rules, which is probably the worst idea for a roleplay rule out of all of them. "Yeah, you can be enemies and really hate one another, but you will be banned if you kill eachother! rawrrawrrawr"
DERP - Deroleplay. Some community?
DERP - Deroleplay. Some community?
Digital Entertainment RolePlay... (aka Soret's second attempt at INH)
Digital Entertainment RolePlay... (aka Soret's second attempt at INH)
There you have it. I don't know what it was for :b. I just trolled there like a few hours ago :)
There you have it. I don't know what it was for :b. I just trolled there like a few hours ago :)
Meh, it's just another generic community running an OA leak. Soret's last "original" theme didn't work out, as he kept changing the story to suit him better, so now he has changed it to a prison RP theme... With the HL2 canon.
I've always wanted to do actual prison RP. But [NNJG] Prison RP isn't really RP.
I'm contemplating making a comic to disprove that so hard... HL2 RP in a nutshell...
Then that would mean every player would be a rebel.
And you honestly doubt that...? CP Rebel Citizen who gets buttfucked by either of the first, two.
This is a little bit of an off-run to several other RP esque forums... Whats this one regarding though? RP Terms/Rules which make no fucking sense or have any form of logical output. I'll start off! RDM The term RDM is without doubt the most annoying/frustrating term I've ever had to hear in my time of actually roleplaying. Why? Because it makes no damn sense! So let me get this straight... If were RP'ing, and a guy kills us in the form of mass murder, genocide, just whatever floats the boat of the RP, we have too stop roleplaying, and go,"RDM RDM RDM" Why? Why can't players just actually roleplay out the situation, and let the authority(i.e. MP's, CP's, NCR) take control of the situation without disturbing the roleplay. Yeah in the long-run that can go hand in hand with people just being complete idiots by slaughtering off the whole server, but I believe to get better RP you need to drop the term of RDM all together, and actually roleplay out the situation, and later down the road where the player is arrested you could form a punishment involving ragdoll hanging or something. Alright shoot with your complaints, and make comments on others.
Actually on a server I sometimes visit that belongs to the SN1P3 Federation is pretty damn good. I buy a desert eagle, kill a few cops, civilians, and the occasional mayor, and the roleplay is most of the time seamless- Soon a cop puts up an arrest warrant for me, either on the grounds of "murder" "killing a cop" "homicide" and quite frequently, "RDM". Actually, my best experiences with RP servers are these, where I play the role of a serial killer... being a cop is also fun though. EDIT: I also frequently stage a rebellion, and make an "HQ" underwater. [editline]27th April 2011[/editline]
Meh, it's just another generic community running an OA leak. People actually make STORIES for there roleplay? i thought RP was just going with the flow of how the players behave... In my instance, the cops go wild when they see me running around recklessly discharging a glock.
I remember a RP server where an admin made a monopoly on almost everything and sold stuff for horrendous prices. Me and several Mafia members did smuggling using the subway and when the admin came down he tried getting the police to arrest us. When we drove them off with gunfire he shouted SHOOT TO MISS and he banned us. It's like, what tard sends men with arrest batons straight at some men in a subway armed with guns?

It's like, what tard sends men with arrest batons straight at some men in a subway armed with guns?
A tard with no honor. I've never liked S2M/S2K for this reason. A better way too do it would be adjusting it to percentages with the guns. 25% chance of hitting the target if you shoot at it, and low damage. That way the fight can be dramatic/roleplay-like, but would still be fun for both parties.
25% chance of hitting the target if you shoot at it, and low damage..
Coding the perfect shoot-to-miss weapon wouldn't really feel like the "real thing", but even with the "real thing" the accuracy sometimes seems way too...accurate. Even so, the USP Match in HL2RP is extremely accurate, and headshots are very common. The reason S2K/S2M was implemented was because human beings, with all of their emotions and shit, can't aim as well as the game can. Suddenly, people who play(ed) shooters are better than everyone else, because they can aim better. Still, S2K/S2M is a very abused rule, and should be either better understood or the guns' accuracy/recoil simply decreased/increased.
I would take the latter too be honest... Players usually won't wish to RP being fearful... Which is another issue, people making the standard.... EMO SUPER TOUGH GUY, charchter. Yeah I've done it myself, but sometimes it's like, "You do realize why were here...? Yes?"
