Gmod 13 takes up too much ******* processing power.

Sometimes Garry's Mod decides to show a black screen only and lags my computer like fuck, making it literally impossible to close it via task manager because it's using like 90% CPU
This is kinda true actually, gmod does have pretty bad performance because he disabled the use of multi-core CPUs. But uhh yeah, I wish he'd revert it but I doubt he will.
I'd like to know more about this
I'd like to know more about this
there was some exploit with it and DOF I believe, so instead of fixing it, they just got rid of it.
While we are on that logic, why not delete all the addons, some of them create errors which take would take time to fix. Perhaps we should delete lua entirerly, because of how easy it is to break. And that source engine, it has a hard time loading newer format models, so we should delete that too. In fact, why not delete gmod itself?

gmod is on an engine from 2004... every year? what? :v:
you'd only have to, at best, update the CPU or maybe the GPU every 3 years or so.

how do we know its the game and not your computer?

actually, never mind

this explains everything, you're using XP (Unless there is a flagdog error). It's insanely outdated and is like, 5 times more prone to getting hacked, no longer supported.

go get an upgrade, that's why gmod is running bad. It's not the game, its your PC. No, you don't need to get a "Brand new pc" either, don't worry.
I know it's Gmod 13 itself, because every other Source game I play runs like a dream. And I never had any of these problems back in Gmod 12.
Also, I use Windows 7.

The biggest problem these days is that newer hardware cant be used to the full extent (or at all) by windows xp. most notably, RAM. only specific 64 bit versions of windows xp can handle extra ram, while with windows vista, 7, 8, most computers come with the 64 bit version installed

Gmod won't use enough to care about being 32bit limited for memory, however if your OS is cluttered you might run short still.

If upgrading OS even grants ANY performance boost, it will be very negligible. It's pretty much bad coding in some addons and the lack of multi-core support. Badly made maps also are a factor when it comes to FPS.
Gmod is 32 bit so it is limited when it comes to memory usage, but I don't think I've ever seen gmod reach it's cap of around 4gb.
If you want an example of a poorly-optimized map, check out rp_distant_city if you can find it, preferably an early version, basically if you look at the spire in the middle your FPS suffers quite a drop.
I agree with OP on this one, a long time ago Garry even said he was going to stop making major updates like this. Gmod has been unstable as shizzle for me ever since the toybox update. Gmod 13 caused a addon shitstorm, which I mostly waited out, but seriously? A YEAR LATER, we're sill on the same platform and we STILL have stability issues with the game itself. This is starting to turn into EA / WG where no one gives a flying crap about playabillity, and only about content and money.
Someone said that LUA uses only 1-Core and using enabling only one core to Gmod would make it run faster. I got 88% slower game at one core. GMOD Doesn't use CPU almost at all on me. But jesus it's slow and it crashes like every 15-60 minutes. It's so annoying, not going to make save after every ragdoll pose.
Garry's Mod 13 Requirements *SSD or Hybrid/Laser*
I'm running update 14.01.14(dev) When did Garry last update garrysmod.com site? like 2 months ago?
gmod uses 15% of my cpu and like 500mb RAM and almost never crashes, I mean come on people its 2014, upgrade your potatoes or stick to console gaming
I only get around 5-7 percent CPU usage and around 1gb or so of ram being used while playing, although I've never experienced any performance problems with Gmod, even on my old computer which had very bad specifications.
my biggest gripe is how there's no more multi-core rendering like there was in gmod 12
man that doubled my fps on my bloody PENTIUM I wonder what it'd do with my i5 3570k
but it's disabled now so THERE GOES THAT
Yeah iv'e been getting alot of performance issues lately as well, its really bugging me.
I'm not entirely sure what you guys are running on or why you have such major issues with the game... but I have a friend who is playing on a Mac Book Air (yes a mac book air...) with a 1.9 gigahertz processor, 50 GB hard drive, and 2 GB of ram, and he gets 30-50 FPS on the right graphics settings (interestingly enough faster than he gets on minecraft... at least Garry beats Notch eh?)
My point is that I think Garry's code is honestly pretty good, it's just the extremely high number of resources Gmod must load in the first place. I think most of my friend's speed is coming from the fact that a mac book air uses an SSD drive.
I mean considder the fact that gmod is loading the content from TF2, HL2, Portal, CSS, and every other source game you have mounted... that is a bloody lot of data to load or even simply prepare for reading with their virtualized file system or w/e the .gcf files use internally.

same here, that main menu is really unoptimized
no but seriously, the better the computer you have, the better and more you can do. People who still use intel GMA gpus and are around that level will always complain, their tech is 5 years old and even then it was low end. the problem is that gmod can not make full use of newer computers, such as multicore rendering
Up until 2008 i played Gmod on these specs:
Intel Pentium 4 2.6Ghz
512MB RDRAM 1066Mhz
200GB IDE HDD
Radeon 9700 128MB (NOT HD SERIES)
It ran at 50-80 Fps on small to medium size maps.
I tried starting Gmod 13 on it, because why not, and when i try to start it the pc is like "Haha nope"
and crashes.

30 FPS ain't good, once you've been playing on 60 for awhile 30 looks like shit.

How did you run windows..?
30 FPS ain't good, once you've been playing on 60 for awhile 30 looks like shit.
20 FPS is playable. Lower than that and well... You have a bad time.
20 FPS is playable. Lower than that and well... You have a bad time.
20 FPS is playable but not bearable. 40-50 FPS at least, else no dice

Yup, and if are trying to record anything. The game looks choppy as the recording.
How did you run windows..?
probably was on windows XP
I play GMod 13 with an AMD Athlon 64 x2, it takes 6-10 seconds to load it up.
IMO, I wouldn't really alt-tab out of a game you're playing (except if it was doom, quake, or any old game) since it would make it considerably slower (depending on how good your computer is).
works fine for me.
Running GMod on a GTX 580 and an i7 @2.7GHz. It's not too bad, but to get a safe minimum of 30FPS on multiplayer I have to keep the settings on Medium. 12 ran much better, as I had a 30FPS increase from what it is now.
Hell, the 13 beta was fucking incredible, massive increase in FPS even without multicore. What the hell happened in the final?
Gmod lags so badly on my computer.
Most people know this, but having the fastest computer in the world does not mean that the game you are playing supports your 9000 GB of RAM or 100 GB of graphics memory. I question why Garry would even think of disabling multi-core rendering, because so many people have the computers for it. Why not take advantage of it?
Bottom line is, if you can't afford the hardware to keep up with the newest and most graphics intensive games, you will be left in the dust.
I only get the insane lagging during connection, it's kinda gay.
Is garry still using awesomium?
From what I recall, people were complaining about it's lagginess before.
I also remember the HTML-based console made the game laggy over time, even if the console was closed in the background.
And Garry's Mod 13 has definitely gotten laggier than it's earlier versions, and being built on the Source engine does not mean that the performance is negligible, since garry could have added anything.

Whatever server you're playing on must have some shitty addons because that fps is terrible for that kind of processor and gpu. Unless its a server with 64 players on all the time or something.
