why are people bothering to argue about copyright law. huntskiksbut authored the gamemode, thus there exists a copyright for it. apparently he sold the distribution rights to this killslick dude, so, I suppose they made a contract on it. (there's already a flaw with this, you can't really do that without a notarized document, or at least do so and hope it'll stand in court. anybody could claim that huntskiksbut gave them distribution rights, and even produce a signed document or something, it doesn't make it true for the courts)
even then, the DMCA takedown notice he issues is entirely invalid, if you actually read section 512(c), subsection (B) of the DMCA you'll realize that any OSP that, and I quote, "does not receive a financial benefit directly attributable to the infringing activity, in a case in which the service provider has the right and ability to control such activity", is actually not liable for the content hosted upon its servers. well, the DMCA takedown notice he issues is formatted entirely wrong and he lacks one of the most important parts, a designated agent that is known to the Copyright Office.
so, everyone saying that copyright is automatic? yeah, of course, that's actually entirely right. but if you wanna sue somebody over it, you gotta register it, the government has to know that you actually own this thing, and once its registered then you can transfer it and do whatever you want with it. unless you have documents, and unless you do things the proper way you can't use the legal channels to work for you.

Easy.
Promote elitism within the server by saying that VIP/Donators are some sort of "community patriots" and at the same time use VIP as a way to hostage the playerbase, by denying them like 90% of the gamemode. Considering most players actually want to have fun with their friends or be able to RP as certain jobs like SWAT, and all that, they are passive-aggressively forced into donating in order to get the entire gamemode. These players eventually are taught by other players, sometimes admins, that players who do not donate are some form of "unloyal players" and are not apart of the community. Basically segregating the playerbase.
Once you have established a group of "loyal players" all you have to do is rely on these players to act as your eyes and ears to find any form of critics in the server. Once these critics are found, you promote admin surveillance on them, and contact local groups of "loyal players" to provoke these players into committing activities that'll get them banned. Even if these critics don't take the bait, you can still probably find some rule to ban them under, what with how its SEWIOUS RP.
With most critics kept under lock and key, the playerbase's intelligence will eventually stagnate, and attempts to reconcile with problems in the gamemode get you alienated, and eventually can either get you banned, or cause you to leave the server.
The constant flow of new players coming to the server thanks to threads like this will always lead to a steady stream of donation money, but if that ever becomes a problem you could also code something into the gamemode's code which can cause false-flag attacks that appear to be DDoS's. I wouldn't be surprised if Hellzone does this, as it's pretty common in RP communities... So we'll judge the following as more theory if anything: If you ever have a situation like this, where critics are openly criticizing you on the forums and such, all you have to do is use a false-flag attack, and all a sudden you have an artificial Enemy X who can be used to promote a process of getting donation money for a "firewall" or "DDoS Protection".
The practice I mentioned in the latter paragraphs actually does happen quiet a bit. Even if its not done on purpose, you can still have dumb things occur that cause lag, and people assume its a DDoS, and start donating for better protection. Some do it because they just like the server, others do it because of the whole community loyalty thing.
Damage control in high gear. I had my suspicions that hz was ddosing before.
Unfortunately for you though, killslick actually does own perp. It doesn't matter what the code is intended for, it could be a mod of a mod of a mod of a mod of a train simulator. It's code; it's copyrighted. Intent of the content does not mean shit and I don't know why people think it does.
The real question though is why people haven't given up on perp. It's GARBAGE. It was garbage when it was made, it is garbage now. I have seen the code and it's a complete nightmare. I passed up hundreds of dollars people were offering me to fix it - it is that bad. There are so many better RP gamemodes you could use and code in any of the missing features. You could rename it Pilsar Affect if you wanted to.

Back on topic, the issue shouldn't really even be about copyright but respecting the property of others. PERP is filled with so much stupid drama and bad code, you'd be better off starting fresh and make your own roleplay gamemode.
