• Why is GMODS potential being limited?

I apologise for advertising (although it will be free so my worst violation there was maybe temporarily derailing the thread). It is definitely happening, though.
I apologise for advertising (although it will be free so my worst violation there was maybe temporarily derailing the thread). It is definitely happening, though.
I actually think that is good. We need to do more stuff like this ;)
The first logical step would be to contact a developper about the server browser and, why not, giving him the categories idea for exemple. The second one is trying to change people mindset. I think the only way to do it is a STEAM Gamemode Contest, when every year, they pick like 5 gamemodes from the Workshop and give them a "medal", and this contest should be seen in Garry's Mod menu (like how they advertise gmod 13 but this time with a"See the best 5 gamemodes of this years")
Another reason why Gmod is being limited is the fact that people like PewDiePie and others are attracting people who don't care about improving the game and are overall people with no creativity. Not saying everyone who plays Gmod now doesn't contribute to the game but Gmod has seen a braindrain over the last 3 years. I remember how back in 2006-2009 when I saw my friends playing Gmod it was all about fun and creativity and that time people actually used Gmod to make Machinimas most of the videos made in Gmod now are effortlessly made letsplays that attract little kids to the game and people with no brain power.
Fuck PewDiePie (Incoming hate....)
Going a bit off topic here but i'd just like to say PDP actually had some (average) quality videos at some point (Probably years ago), but after a very short while the jokes got old and his acting became more clear. The reasoning for this is because once you have a formula that works you usually stick with it, even if its bland. Luckily for pre-pubescent kids they cant really tell when something gets repetitive (See: why kids get into MMO's/Minecraft/Flappybird Clones more easily at an earlier age) Back to the topic at hand, I really feel as if its the lack of desire for people to learn Lua themselves when things like Coderhire and the workshop exist. There isn't much of a reward for developing a gamemode from scratch as opposed to just downloading Darkrp with Coderhire scripts, pulling up a server, and raking in donations. In fact, its more of a loss in most cases, where a lot of new Game Modes you may see get overshadowed by the dime-a-dozen TTT/Prop Hunt/DarkRP servers. The appeal behind them is also strong because they are simple to play, easy to get laughs out of, and pre-installed.
A little question why in the GCC the gamemodes are never released ? It's sad because they're goods.
Its because of the fucked multiplayer menu that lists gamemodes by how many servers are hosting them, which, if you made a gamemode, will drop you to the bottom because you're probably the only one hosting. That and the community is kind of absolute shit.
That and the community is kind of absolute shit.
People are always complaining about the kids, I agree, but sometimes, it just a kid asking a question with his mic, and then all the players begin to kill him, to prop kill, insult him, and the admin do to him special stuff like ragdoll him, but he don't kick him. and there is one idiot who record this for making a "5 YEARS OLD KID CRYING" video. So way, most of the kid are annoying, but don't forget that most of the "mature" are also annoying.

I actually still have all the files for the last GCC gamemodes; one of them I turned into a Fretta gamemode and is currently on my Minigames server, but the rest I sort of forgot about.
They are grayed out because noone plays them, not because they don't fit or something.
why can you still not favorite servers using the server browser :v:?
why can you still not favorite servers using the server browser :v:?
You can though.
If I remember well, no, you needed to use the legacy browser if you want to add a server in you're favourite.
I think weekly or monthly would be better, to change it up more
No, for 2 reasons : 1. I think that making a good gamemode take 3 month. 2.From a psychological view, if the contest is every week/month, people will soon find it boring, but if it is every year, people will get interessed, and coders too.
Prop Hunt and TTT are actually a little bit decent... but they are waaay to popular for their own good. DarkRP though... not so much.
Another reason for the Gmod development scene dying out is the rise of affordable solutions elsewhere (Unreal 4 for instance) for making your own games...
Another reason for the Gmod development scene dying out is the rise of affordable solutions elsewhere (Unreal 4 for instance) for making your own games...
GMod has never been about making full games though, just simple gamemodes that anyone can join and have fun with. I don't think you can compare that to something like UE4. I think a more plausible explanation would be most of the good scripters growing up and getting a job, or simply getting bored of GMod. With less competent scripters left in the community, we ended up with a decline in creativity, which means that newcomers are no longer motivated to learn scripting since there are less good gamemodes/addons to look up to. This is further accentuated by the fact that TTT is the only gamemode included by default other than Sandbox, and also one of the most played gamemodes according to the server browser. What are your average newcomers going to do once they get bored of Sandbox? Why, they're going to play TTT of course. Add Coderhire on top of that, and there is no good reason left to properly learn Lua. Why spend time working on a polished gamemode when you can get someone else to do it for cheap? Actually, why even make a polished and original gamemode when you know it's never going to take off due to the way the server browser currently works? No motivated scripters, no new gamemodes, it's as simple as that. [editline]dicks[/editline] To reply to most of the posts in this thread, yes I am aware of the current situation, and yes I know the server browser sucks. It's going to be my main focus after next update, along with multicore rendering since so many people are requesting it. A lot of people already suggested a featured gamemode system, I think this would definitely help. It would give people an incentive to make good and original gamemodes, hoping to get featured one day. But we'd probably need to kickstart it somehow, possibly with a gamemode contest, just so we actually have good gamemodes to feature. Another possibility along with the featured system would be to have our own master servers. This is something I haven't discussed with Garry yet since someone would have to host them and they would most likely require good servers since everything seems to get DDOSed these days, but I think it should be worth mentioning. Having our own master server means we can gather stats about players and gamemodes, and therefore display more information about them and sort them in a better way. It would also solve the issue with US servers not being visible from Europe and vice versa. Finally, I think it would be nice to have more default gamemodes. Something reasonably simple like deathmatch or a singleplayer campaign, with heavily commented code. It would give new players a nice base to work with if they want to make their own gamemode. At least it would be better than having to choose between Sandbox and TTT. Maybe that should be the theme for the next gamemode contest.
ily Kilburn, you are one of the best things that has happened to gmod I'm sure you'd be able to sort out the server hosting side of things, but if you were to need help, let me know
I hope the Coderhire death may kill some DarkRP/TTT servers and let the original gamemodes emerge instead of being grayed out (?).

The fretta contest was a blast.
Lets not forget Rocketmania's RTS version of Gmod: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_KS_EBsw8w&list=PLFS4fW8Z2YouE_R9QY2ufYq5vWDTH3NFw
It would be neat to see Garry's Mod come with a Fretta-like framework for games to be built off of although I like the idea of just a gamemode contest! Also it's great to hear multi-core rendering, a new browser, and actual shit is being done on gmod. I fuckin love you man :)
Small suggestion: Garry's Mod should have a news blog system like the one being used by Team Fortress 2. This way the developers can update people on things that are going on in the Facepunch community, and having gamemode, screenshot, and mapping contests would gain a lot more people, as the message is being broadcasted to the entire Garry's Mod community. Each month, Garry's Mod should have a contest that's sponsored by either server hosters, in community members, youtube personalities, or just simply Facepunch Studios. These contests would allow for the Garry's Mod community to get together, and have a constant stream of creativity and new ideas being pushed forward with the promise that people might be able to have their content become vanilla with Garry's Mod.
Nearly every deathmatch, purge, or other "custom" gamemode is just a rename of DarkRP.

This will get the kids scripting right away.
The PewDiePie Gamemode Creation Contest. This will get the kids scripting right away.
Yeah, scripting a whole pile of shit.
Working on a new sorting algorithm:
gm.order = gm.num_players / gm.max_players + gm.num_players / 1000 + Math.random() / 100;
Passworded servers and servers with maxplayers below 6 are omitted from gamemode statistics. What do you think?
