• Why is GMODS potential being limited?
Working on a new sorting algorithm:
gm.order = gm.num_players / gm.max_players + gm.num_players / 1000 + Math.random() / 100;
Passworded servers are omitted from gamemode statistics. What do you think?
i think there should be more players in sandbox. but its pretty good
Finally, I think it would be nice to have more default gamemodes. Something reasonably simple like deathmatch or a singleplayer campaign, with heavily commented code. It would give new players a nice base to work with if they want to make their own gamemode. At least it would be better than having to choose between Sandbox and TTT. Maybe that should be the theme for the next gamemode contest.
A single player campaign ? With unusual weapons like a weapon that throw beer bottles ? I think Gmod needs gamemodes like this in vanilla game : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sowSrXNENps&list=UUU5SdWaXRg9YCx-yW9lp1ZQ
A gmod campaign would be amazing, and it could be community contributed with it's own github like how UT is being developed. It would be interesting solving puzzles with the physgun and a limited toolgun(with some sort of story line too).
There are some old puzzle maps/gamemodes aren't there? I think they're a great idea, it's just a shame it's so hard to come up with good ideas for them
I'll be the writer for the campaigns story. For starts: The story is about three players growing up in Garry's Mod, and eventually their lives are split apart when they are put on to a Pirate RP server, and two of the friends attempt to start a revolution with aerial vehicles. The revolution backfires with one of the friends being captured and put into a jail cell on the Pirate Islands of Harbor2Ocean, and the other pilot goes missing, but is presumed to have been shot down. After aerial vehicles have been outlawed for three months, the incarcerated pilot is released into a world completely alien to him. The server no longer has unique or fun players, because everyone has been forced to obey a strict set of building rules which effectively make everyone's boat a few cargo containers with PHX side props on them. Distraught by what has happened, the incarcerated pilot goes to find out what happened to his friend and on the way he discovers plans for a revolution to occur, the truth of what happened to his friends, and embarks on a quest that takes him from his home server, to space build, to DarkRP, and eventually to a rocket silo. This story is going to be called Rocketeers, and it's main theme song will be Elbow - Build a Rocket

-Snip- My comment was pointless
-Snip- My comment was pointless
Stop post.
The thing I find sad, is that there are a TON of very fun gamemodes, exept the problem is NOBODY plays them because everyone wants to play their TTT and DarkRP
The thing I find sad, is that there are a TON of very fun gamemodes, exept the problem is NOBODY plays them because everyone wants to play their TTT and DarkRP
So why do you then complain about lack of pre-coded addons you can download for DarkRP instead of using one of the more custom gamemodes?
Well I WOULD use a different, original gamemode, its just that they are not popular enough... I just wouldnt get enough players
Step 1. Make some official tutorials for a basic gamemode, so people don't have to choose which tutorial to use which may be too confusing for them. Step 2. Bring back the legacy browser, so if a gamemode has 1k+ players it doesn't instantly rise to the top. (Of course legacy browser should still get a reskin.) Step 3. Add a filter for CoderHire/anything like it that makes them go down 5 spaces or something even without the filter. Step 4. Congratulations, you've fixed Garry's Mod!
Gonna force all TTT, PropHunt, Deathrun, Murder and DarkRP servers to the bottom of the browser, grayed out. Hm. This sounds like a fantastic idea for next april fools.
LMFAO
For me, the main reason is the toxic community that wants all servers to have the same feature set ( pac, pointshop, same addons ) and will tell the people who own the server that they should change their server to be more like another server that they really like but can't be on anymore. If your gamemode is better or competes with a server, prepare to have them attempt to steal it / reverse engineer it, or even smother your server out of existence. It is hard to start a gamemode, get it to a playable state, and then attract traffic to a single server at the bottom of the list when people just click on darkrp, ttt, murder, or sandbox since they're at the top with how saturated they are.
Unlike most everyone on the Facepunch forums, I actually enjoy playing TTT...Its like that boardgame "Clue" except with whiny 8 year olds whom I can shoot.
Why not have a blog thing on the start screen? Most newbies will have launch gamemode set to Sandbox, so the Sandbox blog could be a variety of interesting gamemodes. Other gamemodes could set a custom URL and use it as a changelog, too.
I got a brand-new PC that was better than my previous one. I downloaded Gmod, CS:S, Half life 2, Portal and TF2. I booted up Gmod, and it crashed twenty minutes into singleplayer. Gmod's potential is being limited by itself.

GMod should NEVER, EVER crash when you just got a new, powerful PC that's far above the minimum specs. There's really nothing to crash on with nothing interfering... but someway, somehow, GMod just keeps being itself with crashes.

It was called Heavy Balls. I along with some others were looking forward to its release, and eventually it was... on Coderhire. Pretty much the gamemode never had anyonr play it, ever, and I only ever saw two servers set up for it, which were empty 24/7. Some things are just brought down when you try to sell them.
Aw man, I fucking loved Heavy Balls and really tried to get my server off the ground, but struggled to get players. While I don't hate Coderhire/ScriptFodder or anything, I do feel selling gamemodes on them is an awful idea, because it's hard to get them off the ground as it with the current state of gmod and selling it is only going to make that even worse.
I started a thread for people to submit their own server browser algorithms: http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1424494
Why not bring back gamemode contests?!
Why not bring back gamemode contests?!
This would be great, but only if FP staff host it. Last years was so fucking awful.
