Is the survey down or can my internet not load it?
Just did it without an issue, must be your Aussie-net!
Did it.
Done.
Not done
Done. Maybe you should have made questions about the player base the user visits on servers.
Just filled'er out, best of luck with the results!
[editline]8th February 2015[/editline]
It seems that everyone has a very diverse opinion on how these scripting websites have affected gameplay.
I particularly find that many of the scripts on these websites are of good quality, and when used sparingly and in the right situation; are fantastic additions to a server.
Servers(particularly DarkRP) seem to use too many of said scripts, making the gameplay more intricate than the gamemode suggests.
Hopefully someday that one guy will come around and set the new standard, and there will be no comparison in good roleplay servers.
survey completed
Done, excited for the results :3
Who's the oddball who said they didn't own Gmod yet have played over 1-2000 hours

Maybe they pirated it.
This seriously stumps me here. I can go to any server in AU and NZ and everyone is friendly.
Unless people are legitimately having issues with communities I think they're hitting for the worse because of the whole "12vie/squeeker" stigma.
nah the community was definately a lot better around 2010-2012ish, players were nicer and more helpful and there were fewer servers that offered a much wider variety of gamemodes and things to do. Now servers have gone down the shitter due to a combination of:
- lower quality playerbase (mostly mongoloids from youtube)
- greedy donation farming culture among server owners
- lower quality server owners and admins in general as a result of the above two points
- overused scriptfodder code that makes every server feel bland and generic
- brain drain on coders because many of them moved to making scriptfodder content rather than sticking with a single community and making their server unique like in the old days
- server browser that kills off small gamemodes resulting in the same old darkrp/ttt/murder circlejerk that's been running for years now
- workshop system that is clogged with garbage and makes it difficult and time consuming to fish out all the worthwhile content
facepunch could easily fix the server browser but there is no simple solution for any of the other problems. Some things that could possibly work are:
- setting up an organization of lua coders that care about the community and want to better it. They would provide help and knowledge to each other and would endeavour to churn out fresh gamemodes and content that would be released for free and diversify the community. Sponsoring them with monetary rewards/special ingame items for such content could also be a possibility.
- pulling a mojang and outlawing donations for servers unless the owner registers through a central payments site controlled by facepunch.
Facepunch could take a small cut of these donations and in return provide a stable platform and an easy ingame API for setting up payments systems. It would also cull any idiot server owners that decide to ddos the competition to get more players on their own server (concrete proof would be needed obviously).
Obviously such a move would be extremely controversial and one would need to tread very carefully when setting such a system up.
I'm a server owner, and I use these sites, so you can say Im biased and shit, but seriously, what is the hate against scriptfodder/coderhire for? That servers aren't unique? Do you think they'd be any more unique if these sites didn't exist?
Before scriptfodder, there was coderhire, before that there was (and still is) workshop, and before that - gmod.org.
If we limit what server owners can put on their servers, then only the elitist BS servers will continue to be up, since they are the only ones that can afford to have dedicated lua coders working for them non-stop. Welcome to server monopoly land - make sure to follow the Criminal Code of Super Custom Community or else!
And it's true - a lot of servers are bad with paid addons. But they aren't bad because of the addons, they're bad because the design of the server, or the admin team, or the player base, or all of those are bad.
And I'm not saying that my servers were some fantastic land. I had made lots of mistakes - chose bad admins, chose mods that were not fitting, did not check language properly, but people had fun since I always tried to correct errors. Maybe not unique fun that is unrecreatable elsewhere but it is still fun to play. Maybe I'm not lua king or rich man to make coders employment, but it is sites like this that improve the quality of servers such as mine even if it will never make them wunderkind.
tl;dr - don't blame scriptfodder for the bad admins on a server
Please don't turn this thread into another scriptfodder flaming party, guys
It is dooed.
Done.
I've met a lot of really cool people through Garry's Mod. Especially through roleplay servers because you tend to find people that you relate to. Although, you have to go through a lot of horrible people. I mean A LOT.
Not to mention a lot of community owners are terrible. You'd think that since they're an owner of a community they'd have morals and be someone you'd respect, but it's easy to forget how simple it is to start a community on Garry's Mod.
The convenience and simplicity of Garry's Mod is both a fantastic thing and a terrible thing because of that.
The purchasable script thing is fine. People need to grow up. Oh, it's just a game blah blah copyright you shouldn't be able to buy scripts, everything should be free for me... blah... What are you 14? If people make a gamemode, addon, etc. it IS copyrighted and it should be. It's their property, the only people who complain about that is people who are doing something they shouldn't. Besides, the game is like $10 and it essentially let's you do whatever you want. Buy some scripts or learn how to code, hippy.
They work hard and they deserve to get paid for it and as long as they're not douches about it, I don't see a problem. It's helped a lot of honest coders, BUT I usually avoid servers that use bought scripts because it shows me that they don't care enough to be custom and original. They're just investing money and hoping they get a quick return on their DarkRP server. And I don't think that should be rewarded. A few is fine, but too many is crazy and they all stand out too much. Like they don't flow with the gamemodes properly, such as not matching the design of the HUD and things like that. They're just too obvious and out of place.
The playerbase, thanks to fucking manchildren on YouTube sending their "bros" over to Garry's Mod is atrocious. The developer portion of it is pretty cool. Sometimes you get egotistical pseudo intellectuals that are like you don't know how to do this? hehe fuckin' loser. Now, some of it is warranted if people are just retarded, but you had to start somewhere too. Besides, the GMod Wiki is terrible. All of them. Sometimes it takes longer to find one piece you're looking for than it does to code the shit.
Overall, Garry's Mod is good, but it's just hard to find a good server/owner/community because of all the bullshit you have to search through. Although a really fun thing is Garry's Mod drama. I can't lie, it's like a funny bonus. I remember the PERP thing. And I was like this Killslick guy can't be that bad, people are just ganging up on him, so I looked into it. I was wrong, fuck that cunt.
Yeah.
