I said Debian because it is pretty much Ubuntu without the unneeded junk, simplified, faster, and apparently more secure since someone said that it had a security hole recently. I also said 32-bit because SRCDS is a 32-bit process so it won't ever be able to use more than 4gb of ram and you shouldn't need more than 1gb, 1.5 and the total max if you are doing some crazy shit. Also, this is kinda my stupid thought process but why use 64-bit if you don't have to, 32-bit (here is my stupid thought process) is assumingly more simple so it has less shit to be dealing with unlike a fancier 64-bit architecture. For all I know what I just said was stupid but every other reason I gave seems fine. Why the disagree ExploderGuy? :(
Two things wrong with this: 64-bit can provide performance benefits if you choose to use your VPS for other stuff than just srcds. srcds runs fine in a 64-bit environment and there's no reason to use a 32-bit OS unless you have legacy programs you need to use that somehow don't function in a 64-bit environment. Debian is great but it's not ideal for srcds because of the out of date packages. srcds requires at least glibc 2.15 and the most recent version in Debian 7's repos is something way older. Ubuntu Server is Valve's recommended distribution and has the required version of glibc. [editline]21st May 2015[/editline] Ubuntu Server is basically Debian with more up to date packages and a bit of handholding in the terminal.
Hetzner's Server Auction has always been good to me for servers. You can pick up a fairly decent box for around £15 per month and it's all yours. Beware that Hetzner is largely a "here's your server, have fun" kind of host - don't go in expecting to have your hand held all the way, you'll need to know what you're doing.
God I fucking love Hetzner auctions, but they blacklisted me :( Tried to buy one 3 months ago, seems I had an outstanding invoice of £35 from June 2012 (3 years ago :() that I'd forgot about. I offered to pay the invoice but they said policy is to blacklist. An honest mistake from me, started a job and simply forgot to pay a final invoice when migrating a server with them. There DDoS protection is pretty much non existent though, you'll get null routed easily but for the price... And you have to send a Passport or ID scan to buy from them, it is a shame :( Oh they also do Tax properly which is rare for a EU cheap server host. So if you're ordering from outside the EU, US for example, you save yourself 20%.
