• Old games of Gmod?

I know this may sound dumb, but what were some of the older games before Gmod became almost nothing but TTT, DarkRP, and Prophunt? I never go onto the servers, i only play singleplayer most of the time to play with the addons. Even though the games are old what do you think you can do to "spruce them up." Hell, even tell me how fun they were to play. OK, I like how people are posting the names but what do the games involve? Please describe the games if you can.
GMod 9 came with a bunch of stock gamemodes. I remember one being based on a seagull that would fly around, and another that was just melon racer. GMod 11-12 was mainly Fretta (ascension, dog fighter, early TTT), Deathrun, some really popular GMod surf and BHop servers, Hover Gear, and Zombie Survival. Of course DarkRP, PERP 2, and Cider were still huge, but the player count was pretty spread out since pre-GM13 didn't have the HTML server list.
I played a lot of CS:S gamemodes ported to GMod back in the day: Deathrun, Climb, Surf, and Bunny Hop to name a few. Fretta was fairly popular as well, here's an archive of old gamemodes if you're interested (they probably won't work though). GarryWare, BombTag, Sniper Wars, Suicide Barrels, and Build To The Top were some of the Fretta gamemodes I enjoyed the most. Here's an old video of GarryWare: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TF7KHvlFZmc
Classic prophunt. Like, VorixNet classic prophunt. GET THE FUCK DOWN FROM THERE
Dog fighter, Melonracer, early TTT (oh how I miss you), and Spacebuild. [editline]25th May 2015[/editline] Jetboom's YouTube account has some nice old videos too.
Spacebuild was by far the best gamemode I played in the older days. Also had fun with fort wars :)
LightRP Sassilization Cityscript Tacoscript Stranded Flood Fortwars GlobalRP/Spacebuild Factions by RingDing (I fixed it for GM13 and is available on my github) https://github.com/philxyz/factions RRPX Also, gmod9 had a gamemode that involves stacking boxes and freezing them a certain colour so that you can then climb them as a team to escape your cube area.
Sassilization!
I loved spacebuild but the maps were always too small and servers never had enough cpu to handle the physics and horrible lua code optimization. Also you can't adjust the X,Y or Z gravity on props now afaik. I guess you could ApplyForceCenter, but that takes a hit on the performance.
My favorite were early RP, Sassilization, Spacebuild, and Garry's Bots.
Melonracer, Spacebuild, That gamemode where you're a seagull, Basewars (was it called that?), Suicide Barrels, Zombie Survival, LightRP, I remember an old Noxnet gamemode where you can cast various magic spells.
Sassilization!
I can still hear the fucking lobby music loop
Does anyone remember the old fort-wars gamemode? Those were fun times I played it so much and got so much money.. Playing as neo and terrorist was one of my favourite classes :D I still have all the old fort war maps :)
I can still hear the fucking lobby music loop
;( , I'm thinking of adding it to my gamemode..
What actually happened to spacebuild, I just realised I haven't heard anything of it since gm11-12
What actually happened to spacebuild, I just realised I haven't heard anything of it since gm11-12
Spacebuild lost the focus of attention. Many of its players moved on naturally to other games and younger players didn't know it was there or had other toys like Kerbal Space Program to play around with instead. Youtube vloggers didn't focus on spacebuild and milennials didn't really hear about it. The gamemode still works and various different people have ported it to Garry's Mod v13. Myself included (Spacebuild 2). Spacebuild 3 was never really "completed" and Spacebuild 4 was not really developed by one group or another so nobody was really sure whose version was the "original" version, some scripts weren't released or completed and the game is now played by very few. tl;dr - It still works, various different descendants of the game are around but there's not much awareness of it among newer players.
spacebuild is one of those gamemodes where you need other players to show you what you do, so an empty server will remain empty indefinitely because there's nobody to show newbies how to build a ship or found a colony and 95% of them won't bother even trying given the massive complexity of it all
Imo spacebuild died because nobody wants to download a gigabyte of models and materials, the resource system was crappy, maps were too small, cpus/internet weren't strong enough to handle the physics and badly optimized lua code, and lack of gravity in space. [editline]29th May 2015[/editline] Also lack of a realistic thruster fuel system. [editline]29th May 2015[/editline] This thread inspired me to start a garry space program mod which solves all of these problems. Anyone who wants to add suggestions/help code is welcome. I guess everyone forgot about theatertime/cinema too. I only ever see 4 servers with people on them, and three of them are pony/anime servers. The 4th server never gets more than 10 people it seems. The movie theater servers are what first introduced me to people like BoShitt, and Kitty0706. Now there's nowhere for new players to be exposed to innovative gmodders or show their videos to.
nd three of them are pony/anime servers.
TeamVoc is good. It has anime content but it's not meant to be just anime themed and has a great custom map with a race track with a few different kinds of black and white Nissan sports cars on it. It is also great for roleplay. Roleplay in its purest form - people talk to each other there, sing karaoke together and generally fool around and have a good time - the admins are friendly keep a great atmosphere. There is very little negativity on that server, the admins do a good job in my opinion.
Zombie Survival is still going strong, though I think NoxiousNet and MrGreen (used to be the best servers, IMO) are gone now. EDIT: Seems NoxiousNet is still up but their servers seem to be p much dead.
Aw man noxiousnet zs is gone? That was the best place to explode zombies and fap to all the pictures on the walls.
Naw, man. NoxiousNet still exists with EFT, ZS, even Retro Teamplay (Teamplay 2 won't exist ever again) and more. Zombie Survival is now better than ever! A lot of updates and a completely new mode. Except most of their servers are empty and also they're in USA so you can't find them on your server browser if you're not living in the USA (or using a VPN). Speaking of NoxiousNet... RETRO TEAMPLAY! Definitely one of my favourite gamemodes if not the top one. Server empty, gamemode somewhat unbalanced (wizard OP pls nerf) but playable. Unfortunately the Assault mode is gone. Oh, that nostalgia :/ And you're forgetting the best ones! Yes, Sassilizations and Fort Wars 2 were good but what about Onslaught: Evolved? And Infected Wars? (has a WIP server as of now) And Fortress Survival? War Melons RTS? Those were awesome! Awesome and unique. Some of them could be made into separate games or at least Source mods. I'd add Stranded to it even though it's still working. And Winter Survival. And Underdone: Reborn (it has a new, working version called MMORPG or Underdone MMORPG). Oh, and Super Mario Boxes which now is Super Mayhem Boxes AND THE SERVER IS ALWAYS COMPLETELY EMPTY! It deserves some light! From roleplay servers I only remember Asterisk Gaming PERP which evolved into Imperial Community, Hellzone and PERPheads. What's funny that there still is a Pulsar Effect server but it doesn't get too much attention nor does it have a lot of unique content compared to PH or even HZ. And... that one tower defense gamemode which used TF2 characters as towers and as attackers where 2 teams were walking on top of a labyrinth placing those towers, struggling to be the last team standing... It had a lobby server. Wasn't it part of the Sassilizations community? That's all I remember. By the way, what is RRPX? And do you remember anything like Silver Roleplay or something like that? I remember a friend telling me about 5 years ago that it had been the best roleplay gamemode. Oh, and two more. Zombified World - there's a working 20 player server and it's the vanilla version. Still fun. The last one I rcall was some weird kind of co-op, probably survival where you could play as (not only) TF2 characters vs NPCs attacking you on a big map (one of those maps was a dark city, another other one - a fort). I also remember it had coloured smoke grenades but that's it. Do you remember any other unique gamemodes that had existed before Gmod 13 or ealier? I feel like someone who knows all the gamemodes but I'm sure there are people who know more. After all it wasn't before 2009 when I started playing GMod. I'll always blame Garry for updating Garry's Mod to version 13 without providing a simple batch script which could port all gamemodes instead of killing many of them. But still, however amazing those gamemodes have been, it's just a computer game.

Spacebuild back in the day used to be much more simple, coolant generators, oxygen scrubbers etc and a climate controller on a 4x4 phx plate with hoverballs and thrusters.. And if you were fancy, your life support would all be set to the E2 chip model :D!
i remember playing some of the oldies but can't really remember much, it's been a while. i can vaguely remember playing soccer in gmod with crowbars, building bases and then breaking into eachothers to steal the treasure, some weird sandbox alternatives, et cetera
I only ever see 4 servers with people on them, and three of them are pony/anime servers. The 4th server never gets more than 10 people it seems.
(There's one more ;V) Makes sense the way I see it, by making it 'oriented to a group' it gives a common thing to base the queued videos and unite the players, so to say. With more ambiguous servers, people have to test the grounds to see what the rest of the people in the theater likes and what doesn't.
Prior to really getting into DarkRP for a time, my go-to game-modes were Dogfight and Spacebuild (as unoptimized as it was, I had a blast, and even ran my own server for a brief duration). I got into DarkRP because I found that one, special server with a small community that I came to love and adore, BestSeriousRP or BSRP for short (No, no the copycat one.) As generic as the name was, there were talented coders, and a good mapper to boot. As far as I remember, the co-owner left for military service and eventually people just went their separate ways. Brings me nostalgia every time I visit the group page. http://steamcommunity.com/groups/BestSeriousRP Almost forgot to add, I've never joined another DarkRP community since then, I tried TnB shortly after BSRP went down to get away from the obvious DarkRP playerbase, but the elitists including Dave Brown himself were just as awful.
One important thing to not forget about those days: Serious RP was actually good... There were loads of awesome servers back then, when the creativity of the players was not restricted and could go as far as the mind could think of. I, one time, was a Vortigaunt on an HL2 server who had a badass Xenium crystal sword who lived in the slums of the city 45 map. God those were good times. But those days are no longer. Now the creativity of the player is restricted in the name of fairness, and so the age of actually good Serious RP has fallen.
I don't really think it's that fair to blame Garry/updates for breaking old gamemodes, rather than people who could not be bothered to update them
