dunno about canada but there's actually no need to pay taxes on server income in australia because 1. you aren't selling a tangible product and
2. most servers don't make anywhere near enough to be classed as a business under tax law
the reason people call it "donations" is actually just to dodge paypal's extra fees (and partially tradition because everybody does it to the point where its accepted as the thing to do in darkrp)
the laws may change someday but at the moment game servers are sitting in the middle of a rather large and lucrative loophole
edit: plus a lot of server owners are too young to legally pay taxes anyway

Tbh its much easier to just label donations as a shop since then:
A. It's legal to sell and the first £10,060 is tax-free here if you don't have a job (which 90% of server owners don't)
B. No one cares, people tend to not donate without benefits unless it's a rare case.
[editline]25th June 2015[/editline]
C. Most autodonate systems don't have the payment set as donation anyway

true that, plus i think paypal fees are the same for donations now so the point is moot
and yeah you have to be doing something particularly exceptional to make people donate without benefits and even then it will only be a small number of die hard fans
its simple money sense to want to get something in return for your transaction, even if that something is just a custom rank on some shit server that'll be dead in a few months anyway (gmod kids have money sense but not very much of it)

jesus christ kill it with fire
When a server removes a mod like Wiremod and kinda leaves you twiddling your thumbs because the only mod that made you able to get creative was removed.
Not going to happen, even I couldn't make a big change in the perception of prop killing. It's not until people personally see what the skills involved are that they even consider that prop killing can be more than just minging around.
We have managed to have a sort of "success", we get more people on the server these days on average, and people like myself are much more nice to noobs and are willing to help them get better, the US scene still has a large problem with people just banning or spawnkilling noobs, but here in EU things have started to change for the better. I made youtube videos to attract more people also posting on forums like this to get more people into the gamemode and to stop these misconceptions.
And also the AUS scene I don't have much idea about since when I join those servers there's too high a ping to play and also I heard recently another AUS server got set up.
A weird thing is on the propkill servers sometimes we get "ultra noobs" as in people who have only played gmod for around 2-3 hours joining the server every now and then.. It's really strange and then instead of teaching them to propkill we have to teach them to use gmod :P

Haha, he has more games then hours on his most played games :v: and here I am, a library with just 65 games, I thought I didn't play my games enough but holy shit.
I had wiremod on my server once.
No one used it and those who did just used dupes to minge around or crash the server :/
Since I hadn't played DarkRP in quite a while and I wanted to see if things had changed much, I decided to play a few different DarkRP servers over the course of a few days. Here's the results:
- Raped twice.
- Mugged ~2-3 times.
- (Almost) Kidnapped. (The guy next to me did end up getting kidnapped though)
- Spawn attacked/killed twice.
- Was part of/witnessed 3 mass shootings (And by a part of, I mean I was getting shot).
- Had 1 bystander swindled away from me by another hobo with a mansion in the middle of downtown's fountain park (I was a hobo, he was going to give me a dollar or something).
- Witnessed 1 PD massacre.
- Witnessed 1 arrest (The guy who tried to kidnap me came out of his lair (he literally bought all the doors to the apartments and threw people in there) with a gun out and a cop arrested him for that, not the fact that he just kidnapped a guy right in front of him. The kidnapper attempted to get an admin to demote/ban the cop because he (the kidnaper) was "putting his gun away". (Never found out if he succeeded))
- Got stuck in 4 trees as a logger (yes those guys with the axes).
- Lost ~$15k from being mugged.
- Was mugged by the same guy twice (In relatively short succession).
- Witnessed 3 little kid bitch fits.
- All the servers were codehire'd.
- Injured by 1 carbomb.
- Experienced loading screen ear rape once (out of 3 servers).
- Gangsters with guns, gangsters with guns everywhere.
Summary: Nope. Hasn't changed a bit.
DarkRP shit
That is why I carefully pick the server I play on and most of the times play RP with friends or at least acceptable strangers.
But I agree, most online servers, not limited to Gmod, are pretty shitty.
Oh god help me.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/3VZyeAn.jpg[/t]
bonus ducks:
Loading screen music- Dubstep rap song that's sung by little kids to the tune of some revolutionary war song. I literally have no idea what the fuck I'm listening to.
Logo (heart thing) is badly placed, covers half the text on most of the loading screen messages. (the message bit in the middle of the screen is lower on the other slides)
MOTD is that blue coderhire one with the options on the left.
Forced custom escape menu. (Still can access the normal one via console)
FNAF playermodels, and they're workshopped so I'll pretty much have to restart gmod.
edit:
It's been almost an hour now, I'm still downloading player models. Send help!

Someone cut out my eyes please.
Edit: Why do I always get the dumb ratings?
Bought the game for a friend to play with online. He wanted to play some DeathRun. We played and as time goes, we get to a point in a map that needed him to crouch-jump. I tried to explain it to him as he struggled to get out of some deep pit in the map. Everyone else on the server starts laughing and yelling at him regardless of me telling them that he is new to pc gaming.
The Server Gmod community can be really trashy at times if not all the time. I have ever only played Multiplayer with my friend that one time. He hasn't played since. Nor will I.
People with "Problems" Im talking about mental problems or "Special" people. They come on a server wondering why kids are laughing at them, And wondering why they cant be an admin even though they play for 300 hours.
Breaks my heart that they try so hard and people just laugh at them :(
I feel the exact same way! If they had played on my server that long and applied for admin I would give them admin with full rights! They know what they are doing they aren't stupid.

grow some thicker skin
DarkRP servers with 'serious roleplay' or 'semi-serious' in the title, then you get ingame and it's just a bunch of dudes running around yelling about warrants and money printers and 'rdm' and demanding administrative actions
What do they stand to gain from misleading people like that? It's just pointless stupidity.

people who actually believe that darkrp is anything but an online version of a primary school playground

Would agree, but GMod continues to attract new users daily, it's a little silly to think everyone's a jaded triple-digit-plus hour user\
There are also the ones just jaded enough to know DarkRP is shit and looking for something new but not jaded enough to know that a ton of server operators are also shit trying to prey on them
Joined another random server. Loading screen music, oh boy-

because they want to make you mad and they cant handle it when you make them mad instead by banning them so they fire up their booter to get the last word
i usually just laugh at them and ask them how much money they are pissing away using their paid booter on my server
When people go on servers, troll a lot, get banned, then DDoS it because they got banned. Most people do this and DDoS is ILLEGAL too, why even try?
Well, they do it because they can. I'm quite sure that DDoS'ing is illegal to major corporation sites and government sites. Something little as DDoS'ing a gmod server is going to have a little affect unless you are the server admin and the players that are currently in the server. I'm not sure what happens if you get caught doing this which I somewhat doubt because we all are in the internet.
I mean, have you seen the infamous Lizard Squad? They claim that their key individuals have not been caught and are still supposedly active, just not doing any game service attacks.
stuff
ddosing is always illegal, its just rarely prosecuted because its difficult to provide any concrete evidence that somebody is doing it if they were using somebody elses booter. That and the booter owners themselves generally use VPNs and make sure they are undoxable so even if the government is onto them it is exceedingly difficult to pin down who they actually are
Me trolling you on gmod get's you mad :)
